Has this been answered?

What does recovered mean?

Of the recovered, if you took a chest x-ray, is there permanent lung damage?

Masks do nothing. Respirators barely work. This man who posted this is a professor of physics at the University of Ottawa for like 30 plus years. Stop being an idiot and conform to mass indoctrination with the mask stuff. They work on these things in labs, with sealed suits, with outside oxygen. There isn't a dust mask or respirator that will work. You need to be a bubble boy or don't bother.

Today was the first day of business as usual. We have several traveling to Indy for meetings. We had been doing them on zoom now it's live. During morning meeting they said "everything is a go". I was like WTF. No one took it serious prior to lockdowns, during and now they think it's all "normal" NOT the "new normal" every damn gov has been saying for weeks now. Could get very interesting in a few weeks.

I think it's starting to get interesting now. Georgia is starting to go again. (So is Germany, S Korea.)

I have been traveling for a week now, and social distancing is not being followed, and only about half the people I see are wearing masks in buildings or non-family groups.

Upside is the freeways were almost empty, and the beaches are mostly empty here in South Carolina.

We are still in the beginning of this pandemic. It will be a tough lesson for the "open it up" folks.

Stay safe.

It will be a tough lesson for Democrats, who obstinately refuse to use hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, or even quercetin and zinc. If COVID-19 patients are given a choice as soon as symptoms appear--to take medication and supplements or not--we will actually see a mortality difference between dead Democrats and live Republicans.

After six new cases, Wuhan plans to test all 11 million residents for coronavirus

Authorities in the Chinese city of Wuhan plan to test all 11 million residents for the novel coronavirus by the end of next week in a massive push to extinguish any remnants of the virus from the original epicenter of the global pandemic.

The all-encompassing mission — announced Monday and paid for by district governments — contrasts with shortages of testing kits in some other countries, including the United States, where people have complained about not being able to get a test despite having coronavirus symptoms.

But the scope of the endeavor underscores official sensitivities about any new flare-up in Wuhan, where the virus emerged in a market late last year. It comes after officials reported six new coronavirus cases in two days, confounding health experts after a 35-day streak without infections.

The results will be very interesting, but what I want is a serology study of all 11 million in Wuhan.

Mounting promises on Covid-19 vaccines are fueling false expectations, experts say

Vaccines to prevent Covid-19 infection are hurtling through development at speeds never before seen. But mounting promises that some vaccine may be available for emergency use as early as the autumn are fueling expectations that are simply unrealistic, experts warn.

Even if the stages of vaccine development could be compressed and supplies could be rapidly manufactured and deployed, it could take many more months or longer before most Americans would be able to roll up their sleeves. And in many countries around the world, the wait could be far longer still — perpetuating the worldwide risk the new coronavirus poses for several years to come.

That reality is being obscured by reports that some of the earliest vaccine candidates — including one from the biotechnology company Moderna and another from University of Oxford — may within months have enough evidence behind them to be administered on an emergency use basis.

Michael Osterholm, director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Diseases Research and Policy, is worried people aren’t preparing for the possibility of a fall wave of infections — which some experts fear will be bigger than what we’ve seen so far — because they expect a vaccine will be at hand.

“I’ve actually heard higher education experts say, ‘Well, you know, we’re kind of counting on the vaccine maybe by September because we keep hearing about that.’ And of course, in their mind, they’re equating [that to mean] colleges and universities will have the vaccine,” he told STAT.

Osterholm and other experts make clear that there will not be enough vaccine for college-age students in that time frame, even in the best-case scenario. It’s likely any supplies that will be available — if any of the vaccines prove themselves to be protective by the fall — will be designated for health care workers and others on the front line of the response effort.

Inside the NIH’s controversial decision to stop its big remdesivir study

The drug maker Gilead Sciences released a bombshell two weeks ago: A study conducted by a U.S. government agency had found that the company’s experimental drug, remdesivir, was the first treatment shown to have even a small effect against Covid-19.

[snip]

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has described to STAT in new detail how it made its fateful decision: to start giving remdesivir to patients who had been assigned to receive a placebo in the study, essentially limiting researchers’ ability to collect more data about whether the drug saves lives — something the study, called ACTT-1, suggests but does not prove. In the trial, 8% of the participants given remdesivir died, compared with 11.6% of the placebo group, a difference that was not statistically significant.

[snip]

From the standpoint of the agency, he said, the study had answered the question it was designed to answer: The median time that hospitalized Covid-19 patients on remdesivir took to stop needing oxygen or exit the hospital was, at 11 days, four days shorter than those who were on placebo. “How many patients would we want to put at risk of dying,” he asked, for that last little bit of proof? Remdesivir, he noted, was not a home run, but is probably better than nothing.

This is a good, but long article. Recommend.

A high-profile infectious disease researcher warns COVID-19 is in the early stages of attacking the world, which makes it difficult to relax stay-at-home orders without putting most Americans at risk.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, said the initial wave of outbreaks in cities such as New York City, where one in five people have been infected, represent a fraction of the illness and death yet to come.

"This damn virus is going to keep going until it infects everybody it possibly can," Osterholm said Monday during a meeting with the USA TODAY Editorial Board. "It surely won’t slow down until it hits 60 to 70%" of the population, the number that would create herd immunity and halt the spread of the virus.

Unreleased White House report shows coronavirus rates spiking in heartland communities

Coronavirus infection rates are spiking to new highs in several metropolitan areas and smaller communities across the country, according to undisclosed data the White House's pandemic task force is using to track rates of infection, which was obtained by NBC News.

The data in a May 7 coronavirus task force report are at odds with President Donald Trump's declaration Monday that "all throughout the country, the numbers are coming down rapidly."

The 10 top areas recorded surges of 72.4 percent or greater over a seven-day period compared to the previous week, according to a set of tables produced for the task force by its data and analytics unit. They include Nashville, Tennessee; Des Moines, Iowa; Amarillo, Texas; and — atop the list, with a 650 percent increase — Central City, Kentucky.

On a separate list of "locations to watch," which didn't meet the precise criteria for the first set: Charlotte, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska; Minneapolis; Montgomery, Alabama; Columbus, Ohio; and Phoenix. The rates of new cases in Charlotte and Kansas City represented increases of more than 200 percent over the previous week, and other tables included in the data show clusters in neighboring counties that don't form geographic areas on their own, such as Wisconsin's Kenosha and Racine counties, which neighbor each other between Chicago and Milwaukee.

Executive Summary

Here, we present results of our post-market validation of 3 serological assays for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Two lateral flow assays were included, the Onsite IgM/IgG Rapid Test and the VivaDiag IgM/IgG Rapid Test, as well as one laboratory based enzyme immunoassay, the EUROIMMUN EIA. Testing was undertaken on a cohort of stored serum prior to the COVID-19 outbreak in Australia, and on samples of serum collected from patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by molecular testing.

Our findings suggest that the performance characteristics of both PoCT are below that reported by the manufacturer in the IFU. Although the sensitivities of the two PoCT devices improved with increasing duration between sample collection and symptom onset, they did not match the manufacturer’s stated performance criteria at any time point. Our observed sensitivities and specificities of the EUROIMMUN EIA assay are broadly in keeping with the manufacturer’s updated performance criteria (updated on 22ndApril to reflect the inclusion of additional samples), but further highlight the poor sensitivityof serologyin acute infection.

Overall, our findings are in keeping with recent position statements by the Public Health Laboratory Network (PHLN) and the Royal College of Pathologists Australasia (RCPA) that note that serological assays have limited, if any, role in the diagnosis of acute COVID-19 infection. Our findings strongly suggest that PoCT devices should not be used in the diagnosis of acute COVID-19, and have limited, if any, role in clinical management of individual patients. The role of PoCT in population-level serosurveys remains tobe seen in the context of other emerging serological tests for SARS-CoV-2

COVID-19 and Postinfection Immunity

Limited Evidence, Many Remaining Questions

In the absence of effective treatment or biomedical prevention, efforts to control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have relied on nonpharmaceutical interventions such as personal preventive actions (eg, handwashing, face covers), environmental cleaning, physical distancing, stay-at-home orders, school and venue closures, and workplace restrictions adopted at the national, state, and local levels. In addition to these public health interventions, development of herd immunity could also provide a defense against COVID-19. However, whether immunity occurs among individuals after they have recovered from COVID-19 is uncertain. Many human infections with other viral pathogens, such as influenza virus, do not produce a durable immune response.

[snip]

COVID-19 is caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Following infection, detectable IgM and IgG antibodies develop within days to weeks of symptom onset in most infected individuals.1-3 Why some patients seem not to develop a humoral immune response, as reflected by detectable antibodies, is uncertain. Adding to this uncertainty is the unclear relationship between antibody response and clinical improvement. The findings from a small study of 9 patients with COVID-19 found that greater clinical severity produced higher antibody titers.1 However, antibody detection and higher titers have not always been found to correlate with clinical improvement in COVID-19.2,3 Moreover, mild COVID-19 symptoms can resolve prior to seroconversion (as reflected by detectable IgM and IgG), although detectable IgM and IgG antibodies have preceded declines in SARS-CoV-2 viral loads.2,3

[snip]

The durability of neutralizing antibodies (NAbs, primarily IgG) against SARS-CoV-2 has yet to be defined; persistence up to 40 days from symptom onset has been described.1 Duration of antibody responses against other human coronaviruses may be relevant in this context. For example, following infection with SARS-CoV-1 (the virus that caused SARS), concentrations of IgG remained high for approximately 4 to 5 months before subsequently declining slowly during the next 2 to 3 years.4 Similarly, NAbs following infection with MERS-CoV (the virus that caused Middle East respiratory syndrome) have persisted up to 34 months in recovered patients.5

Detection of IgG and NAbs is not synonymous with durable immunity. With regard to COVID-19, a small, nonpeer-reviewed, preprint report provides the only data thus far on possible postinfection immunity in primates.6 In this study, 4 rhesus macaques were infected with SARS-CoV-2, and following recovery did not become reinfected when rechallenged with the same virus 28 days after the first inoculation.6 Whether persons can be reinfected with SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV is unknown; SARS has not reemerged since 2004 and MERS cases remain sporadic. Reinfections can occur with at least 3 of the other 4 common human coronaviruses—specifically, 229E, NL63, and OC43—all of which generally cause milder respiratory illnesses.7 The reasons for this reinfection are not fully known, but evidence suggests that possibilities include both short-lived protective immunity and reexposure to genetically distinct forms of the same viral strain.

[snip]

In summary, existing limited data on antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 and related coronaviruses, as well as one small animal model study, suggest that recovery from COVID-19 might confer immunity against reinfection, at least temporarily.

The addition of zinc sulfate did not impact the length of hospitalization, duration of ventilation, or ICU duration. In univariate analyses, zinc sulfate increased the frequency of patients being discharged home, and decreased the need for ventilation, admission to the ICU, and mortality or transfer to hospice for patients who were never admitted to the ICU. After adjusting for the time at which zinc sulfate was added to our protocol, an increased frequency of being discharged home (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.12-2.09) reduction in mortality or transfer to hospice remained significant (OR 0.449, 95% CI 0.271-0.744).

Jilin Shulan diagnosed that the laundry worker was infected by clothes, is it possible?

Wu Zunyou: A few days ago, there was a research report about the virus content in the air. The researchers sampled the air in hospital patients ’wards, the semi-contaminated area where doctors changed the isolation suit, and the air in the clean area. In the space where the isolation suit is replaced, the virus content in the air is higher. That is to say, if the medical staff is in the ward, his clothes may be infected with the virus. During the process of taking off, the virus content in the air is higher. Does this suggest that there are similar situations in Shulan's cluster cases? These also provide a new idea for our analysis.

Bai Yansong: There is a folk saying that it is now determined that the case in Shulan is a laundry worker of the Public Security Bureau. The Public Security Bureau is involved in picking up people (Russian immigrants) from April 8th to 30th. Did the public security get infected during the clothes?

Wu Zunyou: There is such a possibility.

Given the sheer volume of clothing/linens a laundry worker would come into contact with, it’s not surprising.

Conclusion: This study provides the first in vivo evidence that zinc sulfate in combination with hydroxychloroquine may play a role in therapeutic management for COVID-19.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

 Quoting: NawtyBits

I think it’s better to use zinc and HCQ, it will prevent some deaths, but is no magic cure. The plasma transfusion also seems to be able to avoid deaths in critical cases.

Yet we are preventing deaths, but not preventing critical cases.
