Another thing to keep in mind...Sweden isn't doing much testing right now in comparison to other places. When or if they do, their death rate or % will likely go down. One of the first things I learned in college was about graphs and charts....you can twist and manipulate them to "prove" almost anything you want.

The one thing you probably don't understand about Sweden is that their "folkhemmet" ideology is based on racial ideology. Since the 19th century they have considered them the purest of Nordic racial stock and by extension the purest breed of humans on the planet. Their "socialism" (from your point of view) is based on continuation of their "race", not of specific individuals. They had eugenics programs going up to the 1970's. So the sacrificing their old is in line with their collectivism.

No country that has gone through the pandemic and are now reopening ,have had a second wave so far. China, Spain, Italy... so why do you think there will be a second wave????

And Sweden’s hospitals aren’t being overwhelmed. The rest of the world will get to where Sweden is but it will take 2-3x longer for this virus to burn out in lockdown countries.

Show your work in that they will lead the world in immunity. Show me ANY science that says ANYONE is forming durable immunity. You probably have better understanding about Swedish society now, but still I'm not sure if some cultural tendencies can fade in 40 years if they've been in place for nearly 200 years. The interesting point about Swedish press has been, that most of the infections have been considered to be happening to "those outsiders" and not ethnic swedes. (Not saying that isn't true since immigrants live in larger households. But still making it explicit is kinda funny.)

Pepe. Thanks. The meager, reliable studies I've seen on this (I posted on in here a few days ago) seem to show a certain percentage don't develop antibodies. This is troubling from a vax and herd immunity perspective.

The Czech study is very appaling in the low prevalence detected. One can speculate if its really that low or just that many people got it and did not develop antibodies.

The other large sample study in Spain also points to a very low average prevalence, which is discouraging as the scenario has room to repeat at least 11 times as it has already done.

Leaked Pentagon memo warns of 'real possibility' of COVID-19 resurgence, vaccine not coming until summer 2021

The Defense Department should prepare to operate in a "globally-persistent" novel coronavirus (COVID-19) environment without an effective vaccine until "at least the summer of 2021," according to a draft Pentagon memo obtained by Task & Purpose.

"We have a long path ahead, with the real possibility of a resurgence of COVID-19," reads the memo, authored for Secretary of Defense Mark Esper but not yet bearing his signature.

"Therefore, we must now re-focus our attention on resuming critical missions, increasing levels of activity, and making necessary preparations should a significant resurgence of COVID-19 occur later this year."

Despite its grim forecast, the draft document lays out a framework for the U.S. military's proverbial reopening, which includes the resumption of training exercises, increased operational tempo, and the repositioning of forces and supplies to fight the global pandemic.

A Pentagon spokeswoman said the document was outdated but declined to provide more specifics.

The memo was prepared by Kenneth Rapuano, assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and global security, and is intended to update previous guidance issued by Esper on April 1, 2020. It's unclear if Esper has seen the memo.

The document has not been officially released, and could see changes since being circulated among the military services at the beginning of May for feedback, a defense official said on condition of anonymity.

“All indications suggest we will be operating in a globally-persistent COVID-19 environment in the months ahead,” the memo reads. “This will likely continue until there is wide-scale immunity, through immunization, and some immunity post-recovery from the virus.”

The Pentagon framework for operations in a "persistent COVID-19 environment" relies on a number of assumptions, including the chance of successive waves of infection, continued shortages of personal protective equipment, and a lack of a viable treatment or vaccine for COVID-19 until at least next summer.

More waves of infection will occur “in clusters” that will coincide with the seasonal flu season, the memo suggests, while testing “will not provide 100% assurance of the absence” of the virus.

Coronavirus patients in new Chinese cluster exhibiting symptoms different from Wuhan

Coronavirus patients in northeastern China are reportedly taking longer to recover from the virus and to exhibit symptoms than patients from the original outbreak in Wuhan, one of China’s top doctors told state TV Tuesday.

Dr. Qiu Haibo, who is taking care of patients in the northeast, said the more than two-week incubation period is making it hard to keep the virus from spreading and could show the virus is changing, Bloomberg reported.

Patients in the northeast also mostly have lung damage rather than in their heart, kidney and stomach as in Wuhan.

Wearing a face mask can reduce coronavirus transmission by up to 75 percent, study says

Researchers have found that wearing surgical masks can significantly reduce the rate of airborne COVID-19 transmission, according to a study released on Sunday.

The study, conducted by a team of scientists in Hong Kong, found the rate of non-contact transmission through respiratory droplets or airborne particles dropped by as much as 75 percent when masks were used.

“The findings implied to the world and the public is that the effectiveness of mask-wearing against the coronavirus pandemic is huge,” said Dr. Yuen Kwok-yung, a leading microbiologist from Hong Kong University who helped discover the SARS virus back in 2003.

"Universal masking at 80 [percent] adoption flattens the curve significantly more than maintaining a strict lockdown," researchers wrote in the study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, as of last week.

"Masking at only 50 [percent] adoption is not sufficient to prevent continued spread," the researchers added. "Replacing the strict lockdown with social distancing on May 31 without masking results in unchecked spread."

US virus deaths projected to top 113,000 by mid-June: models

Coronavirus-related deaths among Americans are projected to surpass 113,000 by mid-June, a modeling average released Tuesday showed, underlining the US status as the nation worst affected by the pandemic.

The United States has recorded more than 1.5 million confirmed COVID-19 infections and 91,600 fatalities as of Tuesday, but a projection compiled from nine models from separate institutions predicted roughly 22,000 more Americans would succumb to the disease over the next 25 days.




We've been averaging well over 1000 deaths a day. Methinks this model is low.
