Trump to reveal coronavirus 'breakthrough' therapeutic, WH press secretary says

President Trump plans to hold a news conference Sunday evening regarding a potential major therapeutic “breakthrough” for treating the coronavirus.

The president will announce the development at 6 p.m., accompanied by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Dr. Stephen Hahn, head of the Food and Drug Administration, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany posted on Twitter late Saturday.

Earlier in the day, the president suggested someone at the FDA was purposefully trying to delay clinical trials for therapeutics and vaccines for political purposes.

“Obviously, they are hoping to delay the answer until after November 3rd,” Trump tweeted, referring to Election Day. “Must focus on speed, and saving lives!”

Coronavirus survivors plagued by long-term ailments

[snip]

Lasting effects from COVID-19 including symptoms such as loss of the sense of smell, a dry cough, a flu or fever, shortness of breath, nausea and chronic fatigue, Business Insider reported.

[snip]

As if that weren't enough, the problems patients experience are also more complex and varied, including heart, lung and psychological symptoms.

Additionally, some underlying issues may be "unmasked" by the disease, depending on the severity of the infection, according to Scientific American.

[snip]

While much remains unknown to doctors fighting the disease, coronavirus hallmarks such as lung damage, breathing problems, blood clots, heart inflammation, headaches and other neurological issues and extreme fatigue may help them identify additional treatment options.

This is not a one-and-done illness. You do not want to get this.

This is starting to look like Lyme Disease. Chronic.

Why Some People Get Terribly Sick from COVID-19

You might have a sniffle and be done. You might run a fever with a cough and unshakable fatigue for five days—or 10. Or you might end up in a hospital, gasping air into congested lungs, an immunological storm raging in your body. And you might not make it through COVID-19 alive.

[snip]

For a given individual, the elements of risk stack up like the layers of a Russian nesting doll. The innermost core includes genes, biological sex and age. Cellular and hormonal factors that accompany these characteristics affect vulnerability to infectious microbes, including SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus causing the pandemic. The second layer consists of diseases and chronic conditions acquired over time, many of which make it easier for the virus to enter cells or harder for the body to fight it effectively. The outermost layer reflects the accumulated nicks and gouges of external circumstance: housing and work conditions, poor access to health care, nutritional status, and exposure to toxins and pollution. For people of color, these social and economic aspects include the cumulative stresses of systemic racism and discrimination.

When covid-19 becomes a chronic illness

THE SYMPTOMS began in March, says Laura, a British woman in her mid-20s. At first covid-19 felt like a bad case of flu: a dry cough, fever, shortness of breath, loss of smell, “horrendous nausea” and general fatigue. After three weeks of rest, things started to improve. Five months later, she has still not recovered. Sometimes her symptoms ease for a week or two

The rest is behind a paywall. Sorry.

FDA, under pressure from Trump, expected to authorize blood plasma as Covid-19 treatment

President Trump is expected to announce Sunday evening that the Food and Drug Administration will authorize the use of blood plasma from patients who have recovered from Covid-19 as a treatment for the disease, according to an individual familiar with the plans.

The decision, which Trump’s press secretary heralded ahead of time as a “major therapeutic breakthrough,” likely falls far short of that description — and could generate intense controversy inside the administration and the broader scientific community.

Blood plasma is among a host of potential therapeutics that have been undergoing testing in clinical trials. The hope is that infusions of antibody-rich plasma from those who have recovered from Covid-19 can be injected into ill patients, kickstarting their immune system and allowing them to fight off the virus until they can generate their own antibodies.

A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic and the National Institutes of Health found that plasma treatments appeared to have a small but statistically significant impact on reducing mortality in hospitalized Covid-19 patients who received the infusions within three days of the onset of symptoms, compared with those who got plasma later. That study, while large, did not include a placebo group, making it difficult to interpret the data.

University of Washington forecasts 300,000 U.S. COVID-19 deaths

Nearly 300,000 Americans could be dead from COVID-19 by Dec. 1, University of Washington health experts forecast on Thursday, although they said 70,000 lives could be saved if people were scrupulous about wearing masks.

The prediction by the university's widely cited Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation comes as top White House infectious disease advisors warned that major U.S. cities could erupt as new hot spots if officials there were not vigilant with counter-measures.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

This doesn’t seem to be an unreasonable projection. If deaths are currently clocking along at 1,000 per day, that’s 30,000 dead per month. There are approximately 127 days left in the year, or four months and one week.

That’s 127,000 deaths on top of the existing deaths of 180,000, or 307,000 total.

The pandemic has been raging for six months now and we’ll be ten months in by year’s end. By the time a full twelve months have elapsed, America will see a total of 370,000 deaths, or half as many as were seen in the 1957 pandemic that killed 675,000 Americans.

Is convalescent plasma safe and effective? We answer the major questions about the Covid-19 treatment

The Food and Drug Administration on Sunday issued an emergency authorization for doctors to treat Covid-19 using blood plasma from patients who’ve recovered from the disease.

Below, STAT answers the major questions surrounding convalescent plasma as a Covid-19 treatment and the science supporting its use.

[snip]

A study released Aug. 13 — but not yet peer-reviewed — suggested that using convalescent plasma to treat patients with severe Covid-19 soon after their diagnosis was associated with a lower likelihood of death. But the study had serious scientific limitations that make interpreting the findings difficult.

The Mayo Clinic study, which enrolled more than 35,000 patients, showed that patients who received transfusions within three days of their Covid-19 diagnosis had a seven-day death rate of 8.7%, while patients who received plasma treatment after four or more days had a mortality rate of 11.9%. The difference met the standard for statistical significance.

The study didn’t include a placebo group for comparison, however, so it’s unclear exactly how impactful the plasma treatment might be. The study was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and sought to broaden access to convalescent plasma, part of a so-called “expanded access” program not designed to definitively test how well the treatment works, but instead to quickly get it to patients.

More rigorous randomized, placebo-controlled studies of convalescent plasma are ongoing.

Comment: As I said before, statistical significance does not necessarily mean clinical significance.

Hong Kong reports first coronavirus reinfection

Hong Kong – A man was infected with the coronavirus after recovering from an initial bout in April in what scientists said was the first case showing that reinfection may occur within a few months.

The 33-year-old’s second SARS-CoV-2 infection was detected via airport screening on his return to Hong Kong from Europe this month. Researchers at the University of Hong Kong used genomic sequence analysis to prove that he had been infected by two different strains. The information technology worker didn’t develop any symptoms from his second infection, which might indicate any “subsequent infections may be milder,” the researchers said.

“Our findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 may persist in humans,” Kwok-Yung Yuen and colleagues said Monday in a paper accepted for publication in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. The findings are reminiscent of the coronaviruses that cause the common cold, and suggest SARS-CoV-2 may continue to circulate “even if patients have acquired immunity via natural infection or via vaccination,” they said.

We, of course, knew that reinfection was possible, anecdotally. But, now we have proof.

As Child Covid Cases Rise, Doctors Watch for Potential Long-Term Effects

As more children become infected with Covid-19, doctors are paying closer attention to potential long-term effects.

In adults, one of Covid’s most troubling effects has been so-called long-haul cases, in which people whose illness initially seemed moderate end up having symptoms for months, sometimes getting worse over time. Now as doctors warn that children may be more vulnerable to the virus than initially believed, researchers are looking more closely at longer-term symptoms in kids, too.

Children now represent about 9% of all Covid-19 cases in the U.S., up from 2% in March, according to the most recent weekly report issued from Children’s Hospital Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The number of child Covid-19 cases has doubled since July 9, totaling 406,109 as of Aug. 13, according to cases reported from 49 states.

The majority of children experience mild illness or even no symptoms from Covid-19, doctors say. But some are reporting symptoms that persist for weeks, or the development of post-viral syndromes. Symptoms reported include fever, cough, headaches, shortness of breath and gastrointestinal problems.

FDA chief apologizes for overstating plasma effect on virus

Responding to an outcry from medical experts, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn on Tuesday apologized for overstating the life-saving benefits of treating COVID-19 patients with convalescent plasma.

Scientists and medical experts have been pushing back against the claims about the treatment since President Donald Trump’s announcement on Sunday that the FDA had decided to issue emergency authorization for convalescent plasma, taken from patients who have recovered from the coronavirus and rich in disease-fighting antibodies.

[snip]

Hahn had echoed Trump in saying that 35 more people out of 100 would survive the coronavirus if they were treated with the plasma. That claim vastly overstated preliminary findings of Mayo Clinic observations.

So I don’t lose the thread post

Grandson got quarantined, He got exposed at school, he is fine. He refused to get tested age 17 and was pissed he couldn't go to work or school.
They didn’t close the school not even to clean it.
They didn’t quarantine my daughter or ex son in law., grandson spends time at both homes.
