Little tidbit of ground-level intel. Mainly just confirmation of what we already knew:

A buddy outside of Atlanta just called and said his CDC neighbor was whisked away in an Army HUM-V yesterday and was being taken to the airport to help with passenger screenings. She told him, "It's here."

China coronavirus outbreak could be 10 times worse than Sars, expert says

Some snips from this disturbing article:

*A leading Chinese virology expert has warned that the Wuhan coronavirus epidemic
could be 10 times as bad as the Sars outbreak that killed almost 800 people around the world in 2002-03.

*Guan Yi, director of the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases at Hong Kong University, said in an interview with Caixin magazine on Thursday that after a brief visit to the central China city on Tuesday and Wednesday, he “chose to become a deserter” and left.

*The 12 other cases were reported in Thailand, South Korea, Japan, the United States, and the cities of Hong Kong and Macau.

*One of the reasons for the prediction was that authorities in Wuhan had missed their best opportunity to contain the spread of the disease, Guan said.
Although a travel ban had been introduced in the city on Thursday morning, the “golden time” to contain the virus had passed, as most of the people travelling home for the Lunar New Year
holiday had already left, he said.

*“They might have been in contact with patients in the community and still in the incubation stage when they left Wuhan. They are probably virus carriers on the move.

*Guan said he expected the outbreak to peak over the weekend, as the virus had an incubation period of about eight days.

*“Transmission within communities is believed to be taking place in Wuhan,” the report said. Its assessment “indicated that the epidemic is ongoing in Wuhan and that further spread is almost certain”.

*The epidemiological investigation found that 51 per cent of patients studied had neither visited Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market nor had contact with infected patients, the CDC said.

So here's something to think about

They have just quarantined an entire city of 11 million people

This is unprecedented

But worse,..... it's too late for a quarantine

They already have cases in many cities and towns in China

They have cases in Shanghai, for example

There are almost 25 million people in Shanghai

Think about what happens when they start trying to quarantine a few hundred million people

Less than 12 hours later they have about 7 cities on lockdown

....pure panic at this point

Thanks. Not good. Not surprising.

When you think about it, the cats out of the bag. There's nothing we can do now but watch and wait. And pray, if you are so inclined. Between air travel, Mother Nature being a sneaky bitch, and governments that aren't willing to make tough decisions until it's too late, we are eventually screwed. Is 2019-nCoV the one? Only time will tell.

Waxing nostalgic for a minute here about tough government decisions, I was an air traffic controller on 9/11. And some brave government employee made the decision to clear the air space over the US. We landed every airplane over America in less than 3 hours. The person who made that decision was a hero, and had balls the size of watermelons. We don't have that kind of person in the government anymore, it seems. No one wants to make the hard decisions. And to that end, we are going to be fucked eventually.

New coronavirus could be ‘as deadly’ as Spanish flu pandemic

Professor Neil Ferguson, Vice-Dean for Academic Development of Imperial College London’s School of Medicine, told London reporters on Jan. 22 that the novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) and the 1918 H1N1 virus have “roughly the same” mortality rate.

“This [2019-nCoV’s death rate] could be two percent, similar to Spanish flu,” Ferguson told Yahoo News.

A two percent death rate means “one in 50” persons who acquired the virus could die.

With the current death toll at 17 out of 555 cases, American news website The Hill said the 2019-nCov’s death rate is now at three percent, “a little more than the estimated 2.5 percent mortality rate caused by the Spanish flu in 1918.”

About 500 million people were infected by the 1918 Spanish influenza, and about 20 to 50 million died from the disease.

Coronavirus fears in Scotland as two in hospital after China trip

Two travellers to Scotland from China are being treated in hospital amid fears over the spread of deadly coronavirus.

The patients were taken into isolation after reporting flu-like symptoms after entering the UK.

It is believed that the travellers came to Scotland from Wuhan, the Chinese city where the latest outbreak erupted, in the past week.

Normalcy Bias or Normality Bias-

A belief people hold when there is a possibility of a disaster. It causes people to underestimate both the likelihood of a disaster and its possible effects, because people believe that things will always function the way things normally have functioned.

My little voice is screaming at me, and yet, I just can't get past my normalcy bias.

Wang Guangfa, is the director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Peking University First Hospital, and member of the expert group on pneumonitis associated with the new coronavirus.

He caught nCoV and is now recovering. He did an interview and in it, he mentioned the drug he was treated with. If I were you, I'd make a note of it.

"lopinavir litonavir tablets", which is an antiviral drug for AIDS.

From drugs.com

Lopinavir and ritonavir is a combination antiviral medicine used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). lopinavir and ritonavir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. Lopinavir and ritonavir is for use in adults and children who are at least 14 days old.

Make a note.

4 suspects in Scotland now.

[link to www.irishpost.com (secure)]

However it's now feared that the virus could have spread to the British Isles after it emerged that four people in Scotland were being treated for symptoms of the deadly virus.

Three of the suspected cases were in Edinburgh, while the other is believed to be in Glasgow.

All four patients recently returned form Wuhan, the source of the outbreak.

It is not yet known which hospitals are treating them, though Prof Juergen Haas, head of infection medicine at Edinburgh University, said it was "very likely" that cases would be confirmed in the UK.

A professor at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) campus in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, may be the first case of the coronavirus in Mexico, according to state Health Secretary Gloria Molina.

After a recent trip to China, the 57-year-old molecular biologist was hospitalized after showing symptoms of a cough and runny nose.

This doctor went to China on December 25 and was in the city of Wuhan, where the outbreak occurred, and returned to Mexico on January 10. He spent a day at the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City and later traveled to Reynosa,” Molina said.

The patient is of Asian descent and is a researcher of viral and bacterial pathogenesis at the IPN genomic biotechnology laboratory in Reynosa.

Two different things going on in China? Or, people coughing so hard, it eventually damages the lungs or throat/nose and you get bloody coughs. That happens a lot.

But, that's a LOT of blood and doesn't look like bloody sputum.
