Coronavirus still stumps experts on when human carrier turns infectious


Michael Osterholm, director of the Centre for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, said it was possible it could be transmitted by people before they become ill and there were “striking parallels” between Covid-19 and the flu virus, which can infect others during the incubation period.

“The epidemiology screams ‘flu virus-transmission’,” he said.

“With Sars, the majority of transmission took place between four to six days of illness so patients could be identified in the first several days of infection and isolated, which slows down the transmission.

“I think this virus does not act that way.”

Osterholm did note, however, that it would be “very, very unusual” for such a disease to have a 24-day incubation period, and it is likely such patients could have had a later exposure to the disease without being aware.

We don't know that. The only reports I've seen say "stable". And stable could still mean on a ventilator in icu.

Optimistic about the numbers coming out of Hubri. I suppose that's a good spin since they aren't counting those testing positive without symptoms. If you're positive, you're positive. And contagious.

Did they give any reason for the delay of satellite testing at all, or just "a problem?"

I think the positives are taken off the ship to hospitals. As people get sick on board, they get tested, and if positive get sent to a hospital. Those who are negative with minor symptoms are just taken care of on board.

She gave a brief explanation in CDC speak, which, to me, seemed to shift the problem to the labs, but then said they are sending more testing supplies....I'll try to look for a detailed explanation.

when the states received their test kits, their procedure is to do quality control themselves in their own laboratories. Some states identified some inconclusive laboratory results. We are working closely with them to correct the issues. Looking in to what went wrong.

Incubation period? 24 days? Have seen the paper. Rush on publishing data due to emerging situation. Also looking at other data. Abundance of data says 14 days as end of incubation period.

Cases out of China reported lower...what about that? Optimistic that this is a good sign. Don't have any supportive data. Hopefully WHO delegation can provide an insight.

Hope every US state has a test kit this week.

Criteria for testing in US...some symptoms + travel history...and/or a contact of confirmed cases....basic criteria...so far not seeing widespread community spread in US.

Any US CDC employees part of WHO delegation in China? 3 WHO staff advance team are there. CDC is ready to help. Have not been invited yet.

All clinical specimens being sent to CDC as states get organized. Will still do this after all states are up and running.

Will warmer weather lower transmission? This is true for flu. New disease - don't know.

Info from China? Getting data? Lot more data coming out in recent weeks as compared to beginning. Want to touch the data themselves - directly. Would like to have someone on the ground there to be able to directly access the core data. Also CDC could offer a broader view of core data. No direct access to data.

Girl, 3, Readmitted to Hospital After Coronavirus Quarantine

After three days in isolation, the father and daughter tested negative for coronavirus and were released



A 3-year-old girl, who was one of seven patients admitted to the hospital after returning from the center of the coronavirus outbreak, has been re-admitted to the hospital for additional testing.

The girl and her father, Frank Wucinski, were first taken to the hospital last Wednesday, the day a plane carrying 167 passengers from Wuhan, China touched down at MCAS Miramar.

The CDC said that the father, daughter and two other patients first showed signs of fever and cough that warranted their transfer to isolation rooms at local hospitals.

After three days in isolation, the father and daughter tested negative for coronavirus and were released, CDC Dr. Christopher Braden said. The pair were taken back to MCAS Miramar where they expected to finish their 14-day quarantine before returning home.

But a week later, Annabel Wucinski was taken back to the hospital after exhibiting additional symptoms that the CDC wanted to evaluate, Braden said.

Braden said that they still have confidence in the initial negative test results.

'It’s a Moral Imperative:' Archivists Made a Directory of 5,000 Coronavirus Studies to Bypass Paywalls

A group of online archivists have created an open-access directory of over 5,000 scientific studies about coronaviruses that anyone can browse and download without encountering a paywall. The directory is hosted on The-Eye, a massive online archiving project run by a Reddit user named "-Archivist."

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency amid the spread of the novel coronavirus beyond China, where it originated, into roughly two dozen countries so far. The organizers of the archive see their project as a resource for scientists and non-scientists alike to study the virus.

“These articles were always written to be shared with as many people as possible,” Reddit user "shrine," an organizer of the archive, said in a call. “From every angle that you look at it, [paywalled research] is an immoral situation, and it's an ongoing tragedy.”

JOHNSON COUNTY, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – A North Texas school district closed its doors early Tuesday and for the rest of the week due to the flu and other illnesses, the district announced.

Interim Superintendent Tony Martin says they will do a deep disinfectant and sanitize all hard surfaces, common areas, classrooms and buses during the next two days.

The district did not give an exact reason for the closing, other than to say it is because of the flu and other unspecified illnesses. It’s unknown if there’s an outbreak of the flu at the district’s schools.

There are three schools in the district: an elementary school, a middle school and a high school.

The district is located in Rio Vista, Texas which is about 9 miles south of Cleburne in southern Johnson County.



Comment: Schools close during the flu season on a regular basis when attendance drops a certain percentage. What caught my eye is the "and other unspecified illnesses" which could mean whooping cough or measles, or nCoV.

2,500 Chinese police and military are in quarantine

There was something posted in here yesterday about PLA and police officers.

The CCP will not make it known that their fighting forces are disabled in any way. We will hear stories about 10 or 20 here and there, but, it's not good military strategy to appear weak to your enemies.

If you are weak, appear strong, if you are strong, appear weak....Sun Tzu sort of.....

Or, it's much worse and the tests don't work. That means every negative test in the US so far is questionable. Hundreds potentially already released back into the public.

Dr. Fauci has flat out said the test is not reliable. Listen to Fauci. I know him. I have worked with him. I have had long conversations about ethics with him and he has flat out said he will always be truthful and my experience is that no matter how difficult the situation - he has told the truth. I know two other doctors who are on the presidents task force. I think they are okay... but they are bureaucrats and not free to be totally honest.

Watch how reporters ask questions at these pressers that should be directed to Fauci and instead THEY answer the question because they don’t want Fauci too. Red flag...
