There’s no evidence the new coronavirus spreads through the air – but it’s still possible

A recent announcement by a Chinese health official suggested the new coronavirus might spread more easily than we thought, via an “airborne route”. The virus is now known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), while the name of the disease it causes is now called COVID-19.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention almost immediately corrected the announcement, noting SARS-CoV-2 was not known to be an airborne virus.

The centre confirmed the virus appears to spread via droplets, direct contact and by coming into contact with contaminated surfaces and objects. The World Health Organisation agrees.

So far no infectious virus has been recovered from captured air samples. This would need to occur to demonstrate the virus was airborne.

[snip]

But smaller particles aren’t implicated in the spread of SARS-CoV-2.

Smaller particles remain suspended in the air and evaporate very quickly (at less than one-tenth of a second in dry air). They leave behind gel-like particles made of proteins, salts and other things, including viruses.

These leftovers are called “droplet nuclei” and can be inhaled. They may remain aloft for hours, riding the air currents through a hospital corridor, shopping centre or office block. This is what we mean when we talk about something being airborne.

[snip]

But there’s more to airborne spread. To infect humans, the droplet nuclei need to contain infectious virus. The virus must be able to land on our mucous membranes – the soft lining of our ears, nose, conjunctiva (eyelid), throat and digestive tract and it must be able to enter our cells and replicate.

There also needs to be enough virus to overcome our early immune responses to the invader and start an infection.

So a few stars have to align for airborne infection to result. [/[snip]

But airborne transmission wouldn’t be a shock

We already know the measles virus can remain aloft in a room for up to 30 minutes after an infected person leaves it.

Likewise, the MERS coronavirus has been captured in infectious form from hospital air samples and found to be infectious.

So there is some precedent.

China has admitted that it still doesn't know how many people have contracted the novel coronavirus in Wuhan after officials launched door-to-door health checks to hunt for patients.

A top Communist official appointed by Beijing to handle the crisis said his team could not confirm the exact scale of the epidemic in the city, but warned the number of potential carriers could be 'quite large'.

A rash of ‘travel bans’ as the Caribbean gets serious about coronavirus

Caribbean island nations are as concerned about who crosses their borders as any other nation. So, when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus — officially named COVID-19 — as a global health emergency, regional governments began taking concrete action.

To date, no case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in the Latin America/Caribbean region, according to the Pan American Health Organization, which is helping the region prepare for any possible cases.

Jamaica is one of several Caribbean territories — including Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Dominica, and Trinidad and Tobago — to impose travel restrictions to and from China, after COVID-19 was traced back to a market in Wuhan, China, a city of 11 million people.

As of February 8, 2020, Barbados had not imposed a ban but insisted that it is conducting rigorous screening at all ports of entry.

Ontario couple have recovered but are still testing positive for coronavirus

Ontario’s first two cases of the new coronavirus — a husband and wife — have recovered but remain in isolation at their home because tests still show them carrying the bug, authorities say.

Nose and throat swabs taken since the man was released from Sunnybrook hospital two weeks ago continue to show traces of coronavirus in both him and his wife, who was never hospitalized.

Public health officials are trying to decipher what that indicates as scientists in China and around the world work to pinpoint more traits of the virus, which has never before been seen in humans.

A North Korean official was shot dead for going to a public bath while he was meant to be in quarantine for coronavirus, it has been reported.

The trade official was arrested and immediately executed after risking the spread of the deadly disease, according to South Korean media reports.

Sources said the official had been placed in isolation after travelling to China with the country’s leader Kim Jong-un.

He is said to have ignored the dictator’s threat to ‘rule by military law’ against anyone who left quarantine without approval.

Another official is said to have been exiled to a North Korean farm after trying to cover up his travels to China, where coronavirus emerged.

He was reportedly a member of the isolated country’s National Security Agency.

So if 2% mortality of infected, then total 1.2% of humanity will die.

That’s about the number that die each year anyway, isn’t it?

Will be a “double down” year for a year or so.

Not terribly alarming when viewed in that light.

Even if it is not airborne, it is still able to spread because of asymptomatic infected people. They sneeze on the way into work and leave some boogs on the doorknob. You walk in a few minutes behind them and grab that doorknob and then a few minutes rub the sleep out of your eye.

US announces 15th virus case, this one in Texas evacuee

Another case of the new coronavirus has been confirmed in a U.S. evacuee from China, this one in a person under quarantine in Texas.

Health officials announced the 15th confirmed U.S. case case Thursday. The infection was confirmed through a Wednesday night lab test.

The patient, who had been flown to at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, is now in isolation at a hospital and was reported in stable condition.

Comment: When these evacuees are in "isolation" at these military facilities, are the allowed to mingle with the other evacuees in isolation?

That's what I've been saying. I've been watching Hong Kong and Singapore, and things are starting to move faster there. I think we will be where HK and Singapore are in 2-4 weeks, maybe a little longer, without strong mitigation measures.

It took china over a month and a half to get where they are. It's been less than 2 weeks for Japan, HK, and Singapore, and we are seeing community acquired cases in those areas.

Patience, sir. It's coming...or it's not. Virologists say it's coming. The CDC says to expect widespread infections in the US. So, I prefer to listen to experts I've been following for years, than to you, who have made assertions without evidence.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two patients diagnosed with the potentially deadly novel coronavirus remain hospitalized at UC San Diego Medical Center Thursday, while physicians at the facility continue to monitor a third person who has shown symptoms linked to the virus.

Dr. Randy Taplitz, an expert on infectious diseases with UC San Diego Health, updated the media Thursday on the patients’ respective conditions. Taplitz said one of the coronavirus patients is in good condition, with the second patient listed in fair condition. She did not elaborate when asked by reporters to further define “fair condition.”

63,851 * 17 % = 10,854 people will die from currently infected number.

177,984 close contacts yet to get sick would be another
177,984 * 17% = 30,258 deaths.

1,380 deaths / (1,380 deaths + 6,723 dsicharged) = 17 % death rate so far
10,204 severe / 63,851 confirmed = 16 % severety rate among infected.
16/17 = 95% of severe cases die.

Well spring is almost here and viruses do calm down then. More sun I guess. We can only hope.

It's quite warm in Thailand, Viet Nam and Singapore right now.

I hope the warmth is really slowing it down, 20,000 people from Wuhan were just in Thailand a few weeks ago and I've been worried all of Thailand would sick, still may happen I guess.

It isn't warmth, it is UV in sunlight shining on the air and skin and everything else. Plus vitamin D improves immunity.

h/t sharon sanders at ft

So, apparently the Chinese are still playing with the numbers. From sharon sanders:

Ummm.....

Yesterday's cumulative total was 59,804. link Add today's new cases of 5,090 (see above) and the sum = 64,894.

The above report says the cumulative total today is 63,851.

The difference is 1,043 which is the exact number included in a parenthesis referred to as being in Hubei province. So apparently the two numbers need to be added together now.

Same thing with the deaths.

Yesterday's cumulative death total was 1,367. Add today's deaths of 121 and the sum = 1,488.

The above report says the cumulative total today is 1,380. If you add the Hubei province number that follows in the parenthesis of 108 you get 1,488.
