Quoting: Jungle Jim If you are worried about what people will think then its not right for you. but such lifestyle is not a try to see if it is a right fit. either you are called or not is I how i understand it. I have always been drawn to the monastery since childhood. I recall as a kid seeing the altar boys when I would attend Sunday mass. I always felt this is what I was destined to do, and I was only 4 years old! Quoting: Patriotic Black dude I don't know, GLP. I feel a strong pull and yearning to the monastery. The Carthusians, Dominicans, Benedictines - just to name a few. Most of the monks live by the Rule of Benedict. You might want to get a copy and read about the regulations. The Carthusians are the most strict order, and there is a great movie you should watch: "Into Great Silence". It's a documentary about life as a Carthusian monk and there is a rather amazing story about how the film was made. There are also monks in other religions as well depending on what you feel called to do. I know some of the monastic communities will allow you to visit in-person and learn more about their monastery. Best wishes and prayers on your journey. |

That ancient text is easily found online, being public domain.. "The Cloud of Unknowing (Middle English: The Cloude of Unknowing) is an anonymous work of Christian mysticism written in Middle English in the latter half of the 14th century. The text is a spiritual guide on contemplative prayer in the late Middle Ages. [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] Renunciation? Being satisfied with what one has, without grasping at any need to accumulate more material things, nor being weighed down by a bunch of material things. Not grinding away at the Rat Race of common Western Life, just living in the moment.. It's very peaceful. I lived that way for several years, at a monastic center (for a different religion), before becoming employed at said center (my spiritual guide wanted me to have earn funds for myself heh). |
