Or maybe those cheap paper masks don't really help that much? Doesn't air also come in through the sides?

Eyes, ears, mouth, nose. Get real folks, virus range from 20 -800 nm in size, most in the 100 - 300 nm size range. All those masks do is help a little bit from aerosolized droplets that carry the virus - that the virus can live on for awhile.

Ebola also can enter through our mucus membranes, including the eyes, while even being found lingering in males sperm.
It can be detected in a patient's eyes that is not dislpaying symptoms of it.

That is why when it enters the mouth and such even upward into the nasal and sinus cavities you have to fight like a tiger to break it down and out of them.
Even when you do break it down and clear it out it nwill build right back within 1-2hrs, leaving you drained even more for lack of sleep.

That's what I thought when I saw people wearing the masks that their eyes were not protected. You can catch a cold through your eyes not just breathe it in. A virus will enter the body anyway it can.
