imagine the terror sound when all those B52 start up on Guam...engine so loud..tail fins working around the hangers look like shark fin..they take off and need to be loaded with fuel right after take off..then they fly so high you can not see them unless you know what you looking for

There's no such thing as THE best airplane. Best for what? It depends on waht you need to do. A biplane is the best plane for some jobs.

B58 HUSTLER was a work of beauty..but not practical for war use

its just too much plane..too fast..one mistake and no recovery possible

beautiful sexy planes..B58 and F104..we got fast before we can handle that kind of speed..sentence of death possibility is too high..need to find something more effective

both planes set speed records..but they were death traps and too fast to do a good job

Good point OP!! I drive by a Blackbird every day. Cool looking plane. It is on display in front of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

F104 was like strapping rocket on your ass with little wings..so very fast once you reach top speed..one mistake..you dead

The F-104 was originally designed for one job- to carry a nuclear warhead on a missile, fly out to meet advancing squadrons of enemy planes approaching our coasts and fire their nuke into the midst of them and destroy them all.
When the generals tried to make a fighter plane out of this perfect INTERCEPTOR, they started crashing out.
The West German AF just loved them back in the day, and crashed them routinely at the training base here.
I got to clean up the debris from one such crash. It was a black mark 20 yards wide and a hundred long with a lot of scrap metal strewn about.
The F-104 had to be the coolest looking little plane I ever saw.

one on one..F104 could air fight F16..but F16 so much more reliable

English Electric Lightning still holds records and was reliable and safe to fly. Much better than the F104 but not as cool looking

If you're referring to the 104's, they were buying them cheap. Cheap is always good when you're on a budget.

No freakin way.
A 104 can not turn like an F16. An F16 can make tight little circles in the sky.
A 104 takes about 6 nautical miles, at speed, to turn 180 degrees.
An F16 can carry various air to air missiles, and a 20mm cannon. It is a viable air superiority fighter even today.
Great little plane.
104's didn't even have a gun and could carry at most, 2 heat seekers on the wings. If it carried the missiles it had no place for wing tanks.
Lousy fighter. Great Interceptor. Became useless at the end of the Cold War.
