Hi, I'd like you to read this and tell me what your gut feeling is on it. Does this guy seem to be legit? Does what he is saying seem to be legit? Thank you in advance!

Probably a larp because non of the information we have seen suggests otherwise, we are not seeing anything related to people hemmoraging in the lungs or anything, but what i gleamed from what tangy posted is that the virus is a novel corona virus thats come from bats. Tangy posted the genome in the thread.

So hypothetically speaking, if this is a bioweapon (i dont think it is ) its been designed from the ground up, to look like a brand new virus and doesnt show gene activity relating to anything known to be human, it appears to be a bat corona virus thats made a jump to humans.

We also dont have any good info yet on how deadly it is, and the r0 numbers are implied to be around 3.5 which is significantly infectious even if it isnt anymore deadly than bad seasonal flu.

but I'v seen the hemorrhaging in the videos...haven't you? look at 55 seconds in (this is one of the more noticeable hemorrhaging examples)

Long ago, when my vets first urged me to start vaccinating my dogs for corona virus, I asked if it was absolutely necessary, due my concerns about adjuvants causing cancer. They stressed that corona in dogs was highly contagious and serious in that it could kill the dog. Did you ever come across a dog who had it?
 Quoting: thinking...

thats a good question, i like the thinking here, i think corona viruses are dangerous to cats also.

Feline coronavirus is an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus that occurs as two pathotypes: feline enteric coronavirus (FECV), defined as the “ubiquitous enteric biotype,” and feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), the “virulent biotype” that causes FIP in individual cats.

Re: I'm a microbiologist, (bacteriology) ask me whatever you want.
analysis by the Wuhan Institute team found that it enters human cells using the same doorway that SARS did. Called angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the door is a receptor to which a “spike protein” on the virus’s surface first attaches and then enables the virus to fuse with the host cell.
 Quoting: Tangy

That makes total sense, im loosely aware of angiotensin, my immunology is real rusty too these days.

But something targeting its attachment would be a good cure/prevention as i alluded. Ill have to read up on that mechanism and its simularity to the SARs mechanism.

You are obviously legit. I believe you. I have a degree in biochemistry and would also have one in cellular biology if I had taken just one additional credit of field biology lab. Started my career 30 years ago in public health, including having our own micro' lab and doing epidemiology. I also believe Dr. Fiegl-Ding's warnings. This one is different and has great potential for pandemic. Many more are going to become ill and at least 3% are going die. I left my office within 30 minutes of the confirmed case in Seattle to buy surgical masks at Walgreens in case me or my employees need them. They had about 100 in stock. I bought 75.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76839892

biochem, genetics, immunology and other related fields fried my brain, i had a knack for practical microbiology though.

Yeah the great potential for pandemic is what concerns me most, i think people are vastly under estimating just how much sociopolitical and economic impact a virus that kills just 5% of people could have if it was sufficiently contagious.

5% of 25% of the planet is a damn frigtening amount of people to die (100,000,000) its just a function of the sheer numbers involved, it seems laughable that people would be concerned about a virus that kills only 5% of people, but those that are concerned understand its a numbers thing, non healthy individuals are in deep trouble if they dont get this under control.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65038713

Without going off on a tangent, i never bought the idea that HIV wasnt introduced into humans by way of using simian kidneys as growth medium for polio vaccine culture in the 50s in africa.

It was said by reputable accademics that it was a conspiracy theory and disproven, but i 100% think big pharma fucked up and accidentally introduced simian immunodeficiency virus into humans, i cant prove that at all and it is speculation but i guess they'd be on the hook for billions in compensation, it would be worse than the tobacco companies liability.

For anybody not familiar with what im talking about, there were research papers (that were later disproven) that suggested that HIV started because a vaccination program in africa in the 50s used monkey kidneys to culture polio vaccine, it was speculatin these monkey kidneys contained SIV the monkey version of hiv, and thats how HIV started in people.

How long does the virus survive outside the host?
Is the main conduit the eyes.
Is there a secondary more dangerous component , after flu symptoms subside.
What is the exact incubation period.
Thanks.

For whatever this is worth:

My neighbor is an internationally renown epidemiologist (no! I will NOT give his name), he has rarely been home for several days, and is too distracted to even wave when driving to his house. He's usually quite friendly, and has that funny-as-hell, sarcastic professor sense of humor.

First of all, just to be a total douche, a BMW car is called a "Bimmer" not a beamer, that's the motorcycle. I know this because I read it somewhere and now I'm stuck with that douchey knowledge in my head.

Now, does it count? Hard to say, but it might, depends on what Doc neighbor thinks. Does kinda sound like he's got more serious than normal though, top up with jibe with that.

On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

This is a tough realm and that won't ever change. The types of challenges may change throughout time but will always be there. It's the nature of this manifestation of reality. In his poem Human Pride, Marx admits that his aim is not to improve the world, reform or revolutionize it, but simply to ruin it and enjoy it being ruined:

With disdain I will throw my gauntlet full in the face of the world,
And see the collapse of this pygmy giant whose fall will not stifle my ardor.
Then will I wander godlike and victorious through the ruins of the world
And, giving my words an active force, I will feel equal to the Creator.

 Quoting: Pinkorchid- Covfefe

Im not sure any accurate trustworthy information on any of that exists so far, about symptoms other than bad cold/flu like.

Its probably a fair assumption that the main conduits are any skin area that has lots of surface capilaries, so eyelids, the entire respiratory system ( your lungs are full of tiny capilaries that function to transport oxygen/co2 out of your blood ), thats not unsual at all by any means, most human viruses probably take this route.

Think about how easy it would be for somebody infected to rub their runny nose with their hand and touch a door handle, then another person comes along 10 minutes later and touches that same handle, then rubs their eye etc.

Viruses can technically survive indefinitely outside a host as they are not living, but when they are on surfaces, they are subjected to temperature, chemical stress etc which can damage the structre of the virus.

2019 nCov could have started as early as October, and no later than November.

What I've pondered is if there has already been human to human transmission through out the world, doctors wouldnt even think of testing for this.

On top of that, currently you have to meet a criteria to even be tested.

As far as I understand, only cdc is testing, and samples have to be shipped by mail to them for testing.

I've wondered if it's already been here, seems possible. Even probable.

But, the flu has also been a tough one, and most likely you are not dealing with 2019 nCov.
 Quoting: Tangy

I've been sick with bad colds 3 times since september, im sick right now with a cold, which is mild but ive had extreme fatigue, i normally get a cold perhaps once every 18 months - 2 years, and flu maybe once a decade.

I've pondered if this is already doing the rounds since late last year. Not sure why it would seem so severve in china though, overworked malnourished population? a local mutation?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78344784

One thing about chinese that makes it possibly different than here, They SHARE meals from a single plate in many instances.. They will make beautiful plates of different types, typically have a soup bowl of their own, but will pick up items off a single plate with chopsticks, and even place items into someone else's soup bowl, like for the elderly.
 Quoting: Tangy

The chinese have a fucking disgusting diet too.

No matter how beautiful you make the plate of dog look, it's still an obscenity, a gross abomination.

Then all those live sea things...snakes...birds nests...bird spit...and of course bats, just about the most disease ridden mammal ever...

The chinese need to get their act together in oh so many ways.

A pair of swimmers goggles, vasoline to act a a goggle sealer and a dual cannister paint mask that is designed to
block the fumes from laquer paint is your next option.

It has been found out that the infection vector is through the eyes so it is airborne
and the R0 number being so high means that the infected person is out gassing trillions of virus's as they breath.

The people with really strong defense systems are hit the hardest because the cytokine storm in the lungs is the greatest in healthy people. You drown in your own body fluids.

Re: I'm a microbiologist, (bacteriology) ask me whatever you want.
The best way to "beat" any bacteria or virus is to simply have a healthy immune system. All this talk of special nutrition and or exotic cures is just bull crap.

The human body is amazing, and can defeat anything thrown at it...if you are healthy and get plenty of sleep.

This includes everything from cancer to the common cold.

But, there is another crucial step to make this work. You need to catch a very low 'dose' of the intruder and then get plenty of sleep and water. Rest will cure a tremendous amount of ailments of this type. While sleeping, the body can battle the intruders, and with unknown invaders, it will take a little time to figure out how to kill this unique infiltrator.

The problem is, in modern society, people don't have enough time to sleep through an invasion. Jobs, family, and other needs force us to get up and therefore not be in bed. And when I suggest being in bed and/or asleep...I mean for a week; possibly more. Do that, and your immune system will figure out how to kill the intruder and from then on it will be easy to defeat that particular attack.

Rest, sleep, and water + a catching a low dose of the invasion works, but a sudden heavy dose of infection will overwhelm the immune system.

I guess on this thread we all have our ideas on how to deal with the common cold, because that is what this is, a super-charged common cold. The very young and elderly will have trouble. Everyone who is working too hard will have trouble. But just watch, some people will have no problem. Why?
