Back in 2010, this docudrama movie was aired. It presents a scenario where a global pandemic event occurs and what to do and what to expect with some experts commenting in. Maybe some might find it interesting or informative?

Densely populated areas such as metropolitan areas are more at risk I would think. Those of us in forgotten rural areas are perhaps less exposed.

The only thing that really pisses me off is the people who are on this forum right now trying to convince you that coronavirus is a deadly pandemic.

And oh yeah, they're paid to lie to you.

Next?

Lets see what happens with air travel in the next 3 weeks
Esp international but also US domestic
A lot of this is elective economic activity
Imagine taking the risk of sharing a confined space and air supply with one person coughing and sneezing, then ending up in a 2 week quarantine

Rail travel is the same, prefer not talking about Bus travel.

Well, we have a septic tank. Shit backing into my house is one concern I can check off.

The rest? Let's say I wish I had bought about 50 acres near a lake and had plenty of farmland. But, I don't.

I am going to finish watching the video/movie of Stephen King's The Stand, some one put it up a while ago.

I think we have already had the wide reaching flu come through here, lots of people got it, could not even find a hair parlor available due to the stylist out with the flu.

I think some of the southern States got it rather bad, while many many made it through it and are now fine.

Who knows what will pop up again at any time, we have had the flu come through in June and make people very sick and a few die from it.

Almost everyone gets a coronavirus infection at least once in their life, most likely as a young child. In the United States, coronaviruses are more common in the fall and winter, but anyone can come down with a coronavirus infection at any time.

This is when I am happy to live in the boondocks.

No foreigners here. Maybe a couple of Vietnamese running a restaurant/take out, a couple of Indians and a couple of Turks doing the same.

No Afrikistan.

We seem to keep going through this, "it's the first day of school boys" meme.

The virus is enveloped in a coronavirus type structure but is not acting like any other known types, is mutating, has multiple vector payloads, and could be chimeric.

That's bad.

And no one has ever had it before December.

I live in one of the most Asian infested cities in Canada, so far no reported cases, which I find odd because we get a lot of direct flights from China every day and the airport has been running business as usual.

I don't think we will know the extent of it for a few more weeks, in the meantime, all we can do is keep clean, avoid crowds and hope for the best.

The death rate is probably not so high as long as the patient gets specialized care, but it won't take much to overwhelm hospitals here since on a normal day patients are kept in hallways waiting for a bed to become available. A few years ago I went to emergency with a life threatening condition and needed to be admitted. I was in a busy hallway with an IV from 8 am until 6 pm before a bed opened up and I was admitted.

Hoping it's a nothing burger, but keeping as informed as possible.

Aren't people here more concerned about the effect on society rather than the actual virus. Seems getting it has to be expected now?
 Quoting: ParamedicUK

OP, this is my concern. You and I appear to have similar backgrounds, both of us being first responders. We view things through that lens. While I am concerned about protecting my loved ones from the virus by taking steps to try and prevent catching it as well as treatment once we do get it, my bigger concern is how the people will react.

I have personally witnessed soccer moms physically fighting over a bag of ice when our city suffered a 2-3 week power outage several years ago. People stealing their neighbors generator, the list goes on. Those things happened when we were simply out of power for a couple of weeks.

From what I have seen, it appears the Chinese people are used to an oppressive government which will lock them away for the least infraction. Our society is much more permissive, with those that riot and loot getting away with it, hell, they have even been given permission by government officials. Look at Baltimore when the "protesters" were "given room to burn".

Combine that with the "Ferguson Effect" here in the States, cops calling off because either they or a loved one is deathly ill, and we have perfect conditions for massive civil unrest.

People can downplay this all they want. They are doing so because they are 1: Naive or 2: Scared to death of acknowledging the reality of what is to come, so they are in denial.

I have been involved in critical incident command for decades, have seen some messed up stuff, large scale incidents, man made and natural disasters, but nothing has ever had me concerned for the safety of my family as whats about to hit us.

Judging by how things happened in China, I think we still have 3-6 weeks to prepare. I use the analogy of microwave popcorn. When you first start the microwave, theres only a pop (infection) here and there, several seconds apart. Then there starts to be 2-3 pops, then several more, then the whole bag is popping like crazy. Right now, we are in the a pop here and there, but it wont be long before things take off. Once they do, people will quit going to work and you will see all sorts of cascading effects from there.

Be vigilant, prepare, educate yourself and your loved ones. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

"Press releases" don't count as scientific data.

Add to that all the bullshit "videos of people falling over" and the fake Gummy Bear earthdigger clip (all released on Twitter, to which Chinese citizens don't have general access) and this is a big pile of steaming shite nonsense designed for some other purpose.

My biggest concern is supply lines. We live in a "just in time" supply society. The goods from China coming from the quarantine zones will start disappearing from store shelves at some point. That is on the supply side.

Then there is domestic shipment and distribution that could be slowed or halted if truckers get sick or decide to stay home and not get sick

If something disrupts athe shipments of food and medicine, the crap will hit the fan quickly

It wasn't that long ago that countries were largely self sufficient and only imported what they couldn't produce themselves. Now we have produce and meat being shipped offshore for processing and shipped back to us because it's supposedly cheaper than processing and packaging it ourselves. It wasn't that long ago that you knew where the food you bought was produced, not anymore. IMO it would be a good thing if we stopped being so dependent on international trade and tried to become more self sufficient on a local and national level.

 Quoting: ParamedicUK

To clarify, I believe that if things progress here like they did in China, we have anywhere from 3-6 weeks before infections really start taking off which will lead to a run on the grocery stores, pharmacies and possibly banks. I'm hoping its a little longer, closer to 8 weeks, but I want to be on the safe side when it comes to preparing.

I was speaking to a physician friend about this. He seems to think we will be better off because our hospitals have more ventilators than those in China. What people are missing is how our hospitals are at near max capacity on any given day and will be quickly overwhelmed once the infection really starts to spread. My wife works at a 1200 bed hospital in the midwest. They frequently have patients waiting for 2-3 days in the emergency room before they are moved to a regular room. Our hospitals will look just like the ones in China, overcrowded with patients laying on the hallway floors.

Buckle up, its gonna be a wild ride!

Re: Coronavirus Pandemic - what to expect - how long have we got?
Back in 2010, this docudrama movie was aired. It presents a scenario where a global pandemic event occurs and what to do and what to expect with some experts commenting in. Maybe some might find it interesting or informative?

This is a very realistic doco, I have seen it before and this is worth watching again.
Frightening how similar the onset scenario is.
Recommend it for all teenagers upward in the family, too intence for younger children.
It would certainly help to get the older family members all on the same page and opperating as a unit.

Re: Coronavirus Pandemic - what to expect - how long have we got?
From what I have read and seen over the last week I think we can assume that this new novel virus is going worldwide. So in reality it is no longer about if we catch it, its about when we catch it and how society will deal with it.

Most of us will survive but its about the knock on effects on how society will break down that will affect most of us!

Most western health services are at their limits anyway so it won't take much for them to collapse. Hospitals in the UK have very few ICU beds and most of those are already full without a new infection.

So how long will it take for the west to start lock down? 2 weeks?

If the Gates projection is right its not looking good?

And when the food chain stops and the fuel stations dry up how long will it take for gas and electricity to shut down?

How long will it take to get back to normal? 3 months? 6 months? Never?

What are peoples thoughts?

Keep an eye on the Markets this week. The economic fall out may get us before the virus does. Airline stocks are already plummeting. And the worlds second largest work force / economy is in lock down. I think we would be hit by the economic crisis that unfolds first. Which would make matters much worse everywhere.
