I did a job at a prison about 20 years ago, I was there for 9 months. Not judging you but the guards were some odd fish at times, but I understand why also working around the inmates would wear on a guy.

The ones in the towers were really weird they just wanted to shoot something you could tell, had to go up in a couple.

Congrats OP I hope your retirement is fruitful. What are your plans?

If an inmate did not go out of there way to piss off other inmates a 6. The really bad guys are in a segregation unit. They come out only with belly chains and leg irons when they go to shower or to their dog cage outside.

I plan to learn to play the fiddle and maybe get into a bluegrass/country/folk band. I also make 12 century Finnish jouhikko instruments.

I'm sure OP spent plenty of time "looking the other way", like those guards did

Yeah there are many macho type guys that are weird. Working inside a prison for so long does take a toll on your mind.

Ha no i do not. But we here at glp know it was a cover-up.With multiple cameras that did not work and the officers that did see anything.

I live in a very economically depressed area. No other jobs in the area that had good pay and benefits. I tried college and i did not have the focus at the time when i was 20 years old. I wanted a job with job security.

Ah an artist and a craftsman both, you should post some pics of your work if you have any. My hunting partner (BIL) is a CO going on 26 years now so I don't have any work related questions but you have my empathy doing a job that is tough and underappreciated. :)
I hope you have an opportunity to pass on some of those skills to younger generations.

Yes the newer inmates within the last 10-15 years are more violent. They do not respect even their own. The older prisoners used to do their time and get out. The older prisoners do not like the newer prisoners that are like that. Working at the prison for so long has changed me to not trust anyone. I am cynical. I was a happy go lucky guy.It has made me emotionless. I hope i can get back to close to normal.

It does happen but not as much as people think. There is a initiative called P.R.E.A. Prison rape elimination act. They are really trying to stop prison rape. These new prisons have cameras that cover every square inch of the place.
