So I was at Walmart and an employee told me......( Wu-flu).....
.....that all the employees have been notified that big shortages are coming, but they don't exactly which items.

He waved his hand to the back where electronics are and "see that wall? Its all China". Then he waved up towards the front and said to me that practically the whole store is from China.

I knew that already, but I was surprised the employees had been informed about supply line interruptions already.

I went up to the baggies and got involved in a conversation with another guy stocking shelves. He said maybe Glad wrap was made in the USA, he thought that Glad might be the only USA plastic they had, and then he started looking at the back of all the boxes to see if he could find origins. They tend to just say distributed by Wal Mart. It was kind of funny the way he was desperately looking for "made in the USA" and it isn't there. I loaded up on ziplock freezer bags and more plastic wrap and foil. Can't hurt to stash more than what I have already.

Don't wait, if it comes in a plastic bottle or bag. Get it as soon as you can. 80% of China's industrial manufacturing has shut down.

Re: So I was at Walmart and an employee told me......( Wu-flu).....
I posted thread about this yesterday.

I was a retail back office manager and also softlines department head. I notice that practically none of the spring and vacation sets are out on the floors.

There are serious gaps in shoe departments and all the spring break swimwear sections are not set or they consist of one pathetic rack or facing display.

I see out of place fillers and entire sections faked out in many asiles because of a lack of stock.

The only retailer I saw that had full shelves was one that had four cram packed trailers in the parking lot filled with unstocked merchandise going back to 2018.

I really cant see how places like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning and other seconds retail can stay open of the flow of slow sell merchandise (mostly housewares and womens clothing) dries up.

Are you aware that the polymers for plastic in every disposable diaper, bottle, bag, bin, etc, are made in Asia?

Your yoghurt cups, shampoo bottles, on and on and on? Car parts? China is the manufacturing power of the world and 80% of that is shut.

I don't like being dependent on China either, but geeze dude, go buy some plastic bottles of peanut butter and whatever else will keep a while. Advil and flu meds and vitamin C- China makes over 90% of that.

I can't even imagine what the future holds. It could be really bad for months even if you don't catch the Kung flu.

I worked for a company that purchased 95% of its goods from Asia. We had an office in China. We exported goods year-round and visited several times a year.

As a result, I am very aware of all that is made in China. This will hit us hard, and impact us very badly. Even if the virus never takes hold, the financial impact will be far worse.

If I were you, I'd get prepared. Stores will close, people will lose their jobs, our entire economy will be shaken in a way many of us have never experienced in our lifetimes.

I am ready, I grew up dirt poor. My kids-- not so much. It's going to be a rough ride for us all regardless.

Stay safe all.

A lot of these people have no idea. Or they think usa has factories ready to just spring into action. Even trying to find alternate markets would be a long and somewhat disappointing undertaking.

Start with just one item, say your car. What products, or parts there of, come from China?

Tires, oil, filters, brake/other fluids, wipers, additives, bulbs, spark plugs, hoses, cables, electrical parts, engine parts, etc., etc.

Get the picture???

One of the things that's kept the US whole, and the Dollar intact, is cheap Chinese merchandise. The value of the dollar has dropped dramatically over the last couple decades. The only way the Dollar's buying power has stayed in the game is the incredibly cheap labor available in China. Add to that the almost equally cheap materials (plastics, etc...) and you have products getting relatively cheaper over time, while the value of the Dollar declines.

You want REAL inflation? Eliminate Chinese manufacturing from the mix, replacing it with domestic, and you'll see how little your American Dollars buy.

Re: So I was at Walmart and an employee told me......( Wu-flu).....
Most stuff from China is manufactured in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. These are now closed and under quarantine.

Consider, 93% of everything in Walmarts is MADE IN CHINA.

It takes 15 to 30 days for "stuff" to cross the Pacific.

So, in 15 days, Walmarts will start running out of "stuff".
As will auto-spares.
And Canadian Tire.
And Target.
And Dollar Tree
And Dollarama.
Etc. Etc. Etc.

And, even where stuff is made in USA' Canada, France, Britain etc. when people cannot get the cheap Chinese version, they will buy the more expensive version if they need to.

So, goods will run out. Not a single kettle under $1,000 is now made outside of China. Same for Xmas and other decorations.

And stuff necessary to crack crude oil and pump stuff at the gas bar will run out, creating gas shortages and interrupted delivery for non-Chinese goods.

So, in 15 to 30 days EXPECT...

- Empty shelves.
- Major stores like Walmart and Canadian Tire to close.
- Panic buying
- Gas shortages
- Massive inflation resulting in...
- Strikes and industrial disruption, hence, worsening shortages.

.....that all the employees have been notified that big shortages are coming, but they don't exactly which items.
