Anonymous Coward User ID: 72497887 United States 02/11/2020 11:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have two Berkey at home, but for camping I use one of my two MSR brand filters. I have the Miniworks pump style(10yrs old) and the Autoflow gravity(5 yrs old) filters. They both work well but their are better more expensive filters, and there are less expensive filter that guys trust. Both MSR and Katadin have better filters in the $300+ range. Sawyer filters seem to be used a lot. I have zero experience with them. They are far less expensive, but guys like them. I may look into them as backups. Keep in mind these filters are Not Purifiers like your Berkey. They Do NOT Remove Viruses. I use a older version of the Steripen Classic UV purifier after filtering with one of my MSR filters. The "Classic" model runs on my preferred "AA" size batteries. Others may prefer other options. Boiling or chemical tablets can be used too. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76644172 Canada 02/12/2020 12:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | One year they sold defective filters that would leak past the filter seal. They never issued a recall only waiting for individuals to report the failures for a replacement. Problem is, unless you did food color tests for efficacy, you wouldn't know that the filters weren't fully sealed. So the number of preppers who have those defective filters stored is sickening (will be), but most of all, the masses of people who've already used those filters not knowing their purified water was less-than-purified.. is infuriating. Screw Berkey, evil bastards. |

Tables make the water taste to chemical like. Buries mochas |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 74881172 United States 02/12/2020 04:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For home if you have not already, investigate a 55 gallon drum biosand filter to crank out tons of 99%+ pure water, chlorine treat or boil last step. It is a fun weekend project, is cheap, and costs absolutely nothing to run year after year. They use them in villages across the globe and they reduce disease/death dramatically and you can put pretty awful local water sources in them if you had to. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 72510977 United States 02/12/2020 04:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've gotten several options now, each probably good in their own setting: *Home use, reverse osmosis, but it's portable...needs power though *Gravity Filter, emergency, low weight on its own, can double for camping *Berkey *Activated Carbon+filters, and you can look up videos on youtube to see how that would work. Theoretically, you can pre-filter water with just a coffee filter or paper, then boil it, let it cool and filter it through activated carbon, and voila. Fairly clean water. You could also boil it last. The point of a pre-filter through just paper gets all the organic matter (debris, leaves, bugs, etc) out. |
