Portable water purification systems? What is your preference?
Looking for a back up water purification system. Have a big burkey with ceramics, but looking for a more mobile system.
Price is not an option.

Thanks in advance GLP preppers.

Re: Portable water purification systems? What is your preference?
I have two Berkey at home, but for camping I use one of my two MSR brand filters. I have the Miniworks pump style(10yrs old) and the Autoflow gravity(5 yrs old) filters. They both work well but their are better more expensive filters, and there are less expensive filter that guys trust. Both MSR and Katadin have better filters in the $300+ range.

Sawyer filters seem to be used a lot. I have zero experience with them. They are far less expensive, but guys like them. I may look into them as backups.

Keep in mind these filters are Not Purifiers like your Berkey. They Do NOT Remove Viruses.

I use a older version of the Steripen Classic UV purifier after filtering with one of my MSR filters. The "Classic" model runs on my preferred "AA" size batteries. Others may prefer other options. Boiling or chemical tablets can be used too.

I would recommend one like this: [link to i.pinimg.com (secure)]

But even after filtering with it, boiling and adding a little bit of bleach is always a good idea. Even filtered, the water might contain micro-organisms.

Re: Portable water purification systems? What is your preference?
Berkey is a deceptive company, don't give them business.

One year they sold defective filters that would leak past the filter seal. They never issued a recall only waiting for individuals to report the failures for a replacement.

Problem is, unless you did food color tests for efficacy, you wouldn't know that the filters weren't fully sealed.

So the number of preppers who have those defective filters stored is sickening (will be), but most of all, the masses of people who've already used those filters not knowing their purified water was less-than-purified.. is infuriating.

Screw Berkey, evil bastards.

Thank you.
Even though some cheaper portables claim to remove viral I do not trust them. Would boil also. Tables make the water taste to chemical like.

Properly boil and/or Chlorine non-turbid water works 100% everytime.

Re: Portable water purification systems? What is your preference?
For home if you have not already, investigate a 55 gallon drum biosand filter to crank out tons of 99%+ pure water, chlorine treat or boil last step. It is a fun weekend project, is cheap, and costs absolutely nothing to run year after year. They use them in villages across the globe and they reduce disease/death dramatically and you can put pretty awful local water sources in them if you had to.

Re: Portable water purification systems? What is your preference?
I've gotten several options now, each probably good in their own setting:

*Home use, reverse osmosis, but it's portable...needs power though
*Gravity Filter, emergency, low weight on its own, can double for camping
*Berkey
*Activated Carbon+filters, and you can look up videos on youtube to see how that would work.

Theoretically, you can pre-filter water with just a coffee filter or paper, then boil it, let it cool and filter it through activated carbon, and voila. Fairly clean water. You could also boil it last. The point of a pre-filter through just paper gets all the organic matter (debris, leaves, bugs, etc) out.

I can vouch for Katadyn filters. I've used them before and they are great at filtering murky water from swamps.

As for the Berkey crap, don't waste your money.

Re: Portable water purification systems? What is your preference?
Katadyn Vario ($99, Pleated Glass/Ceramic, 500 gallons) Rounding out our list of personal or bug out bag filters is the Katadyn. This is the most expensive, largest, and heaviest of the pack, but with the bulk, weight, and price come additional features. The Katadyn uses a selectable dual filtration system, pleated glass for “normal” water (water you know) and ceramic for for unknown water that could contain chemicals, run-off, etc. The feature we like about the Vario is you may pump water into containers. In fact, the Vario is threaded to fit a standard Nalgene bottle. Any experienced hiker will attest, being able to pump clean water into a container greatly simplifies the process. You don’t need to fill your hydration bladder with dirty water to filter it, you filter the water and add clean water into the hydration bladder.

I have an Alexapure. It's a coutertop size, does about 2 gallons at a time, and goes about 5000 gallons before it needs a new filter.
