N100 mask filters down to 0.3 micron. N95 mask filters down to 0.6 micron. Think of it like this, you have a colander with 1" holes and you poor in a bag of 1/4 inch balls, what's going to happen? they all fall through with very little resistance. If <0.1 micron then the same applies to the N100 / FFP3 masks and Coronavirus. WRONG There are MANY studies showing protection from particles in the nanometer range (nanoparticles) with not only P-100's but also N-95's. Of course there is a problem- just one viral particle getting through can cause illness. Also, people usually wear the wrong size respirator, wear it wrong, or have facial hair which makes them basically pointless to wear. The intent of filtering respirators is to greatly reduce the amount of particles that are inhaled - there is no certification or the expectation whatsoever that they are 100% effective. That is why you see biohazard level 3/4 workers in fully encapsulated suits with supplied air to attain 100%, and not in N-95's and P-100's. Even if the virus particle was .3 microns (the aforementioned size of certified protection by NIOSH) you could still get ill as the N-95 only protects at 95% and P-100 at 99.97% of that size, respectively. Distance is best. I hope you all are stocking up for 6 months worth of isolation and economic doom. If all you have is a surgical mask - use it. It will reduce the risk. N95-100 respirator better. Distance better Isolation - best. Washing exposed skin - hands arms face etc. - a must. Showering every day - if at all possible. |
