A small stash of painkillers or penicilin is a good thing too. Guns are good to have, but don't prep around them. Comfortable and durable shoes. Sneakers are good. Knives, saws and sewing kits are portable and might be very handy. Higyene products. Go for regular soaps and get some TP MaybeTrollingUAgain |

The author of the guide based his recommendations on a what-if scenario involving a pandemic that causes a societal shutdown and requires people to be self-sufficient for six months. Not everything will be achievable, but honestly, preparing your mind (understanding hat COULD happen and considering/planning how you will respond) sets you apart from many (if not most) others. Use the money for some traveling expenses, snack food, bottles of water and a face mask or two. Why? because your roommates will eat up all that stored food that you would get. So plan on feeding 4 people or forget it. On $500 that won't last long. So you will be better off and safer with your parents. The next thing is to study up on survival knowledge and prepping. You need to know this stuff before something happens, not wait until it does and then try to play catch up. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 78265046 Canada 02/13/2020 12:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I feel like I'm not sure how I'd save a lot of water because I'd have to transport it to my parents and it would be too much. Too heavy. So maybe like... bleach ? Knowing how to get water and purify it? A life straw ? I dont know lol... Basically I talked to my parents who think I'm kind of crazy and they said they would come get me if things got bad. So I'm gonna try and gather enough to bring in 1 car ride... to cover myself. They are actually really smart in that they know how to.grow foods, my dad has weapons and they are kind of hippies in a sense lol I dont know how to explain but they like camping and have basic survival skills. Dad has lots of first aid training and is a carpenter type thing... anyways I'm trying not.to fully rely on them, and also I know they wont be FULLY prepared cause they doubt... I'll try and tell them to start putting water aside. Hopefully they do and I'll get enough food for me.and some.medical supplies and I guess other things I think of.. or you guys mention. Was thinking a radio.. matches? Candles? Flashlight... things like this. Thanks again ♡ |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 78265046 Canada 02/13/2020 12:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll do just that. Focus on food and water. Focus on prepping it to be quick to grab to go to my parents. Focusing on keeping it secret and away from roommates. I do love my cats too much to get rid of them early on. Only would consider later when I can no longer take proper care and would set them free... Thankfully I'm in a small town like I mentioned...parents live even farther from town so really not a lot of people around and they have a forest behind their house. Lots of deer and stuff always show up in their back yard. They also have a woodstove in the house so that's probably good... I dont here.. only electric heat. Anyways I'm trying not to panic but to be rational and prepared as best I can be. If this doesnt get bad well going forward I'm going to prepare more because I see now if something did happen, I'd be screwed. Also I really appreciate your kindness in all these replies. :) |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 75708546 United States 02/13/2020 12:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bug out to your parents now with your preps. Tell them you need to stay for a few months. Get a book on edible weeds/local foraging/survival eats in the woods. Like cattail roots, burdock roots, etc in case this thing goes into spring. Once you're at your parents see how much room there is in their freezer. Fill up the space with hamburger. Tea. You can make pine needle tea. Google it. Come spring you can make dandelion salad. Look up and be able to identify other weeds to eat. Mullein for asthma attacks in an emergency. (they're 4 ft tall, soft and felty leaves, send up a yellow blooming spire) Google it Rice and pasta for fillers. Canned beef ravioli is less than a buck a can. Canned fruit from a warehouse store. If your dad hunts tell him to fill the freezers with meat and fish now. Get yourself a wire and make a few snares for trapping - you might need them. If dire, you can scrape off the part of the tree bark just beneath the brown part and eat that layer. Order some open pollinated seeds in case this runs into the summertime. I can feed 7 people for a year and keep them alive for less than $200. Double your seed order if you don't know what you're doing. Don't plant all your seeds at once. Remember, all seeds don't germinate, all seedlings don't make it, all plants don't make it. You need root veggies to keep over the winter - and squash. Kale and turnips and mangels and rutabagas and cabbages are your friend. Cherry tomatoes and parsnips and carrots are your friend. Forget stuff like celery and artichokes and asparagus. Get a book on seed saving or look up each seed you buy and research how to save the seeds so you can plant them again the next year. |

Get vitamins.. vitamin D 1000- vitamin c- folic acid - multi viatamin--i like to get those emergen-c drink packets- canned soup thats not condensed so you dont have to mix with additional water- like other people have said.. lots of canned meats and vegetables and dried beans and rice. i like to buy pedialyte to have on hand too because if you get dehydrated from being sick it helps replenish electrolytes. You can use the water thats in the canned veggies to soak beans and rice in. beebean |
