I stocked up on cold medicine, prednisone, Fishmox (amoxycillin for fish that you can buy online but it's the same thing as that used for humans. I use it for all my pets and myself), cough suppressant and mucus thinner, pedialyte packets, and the foods I like when I'm sick (chicken noodle soup ingredients and whatnot).

Hey there,

So I'm unemployed. I'm 27. Single female. I live in a house with my 3 roommates. (They think I'm crazy for not thinking its just a flu) I've lurked glp for about 4 years but this is closest to Doom I've seen with CV.

I'm looking for a legitimate list of what I should try and gather together.

Please dont be mean and tell me to kiss my ass goodbye. Dont waste time with that, just like give me actual advice, to do the best that I can with the situation I put myself in not being prepared in advance.

So i have a out 500$ canadian.

I live in a small canadian city on the east coast with approx 100k population. If things get bad I can go to my parents house who live out in the country a bit more. I have 3 cats .

Any advice is much appreciated
Stay safe and prayers everyone.

My advise is that you forget preps and plan on going to your parents. Use the money for some traveling expenses, snack food, bottles of water and a face mask or two.

Why? because your roommates will eat up all that stored food that you would get. So plan on feeding 4 people or forget it. On $500 that won't last long.
So you will be better off and safer with your parents.

The next thing is to study up on survival knowledge and prepping. You need to know this stuff before something happens, not wait until it does and then try to play catch up.

Yeah. Get enough to store in your car so you can get to your parents place. They care for you. Others won’t. They will take everything. Make sure you have cat carriers.

I feel like I'm not sure how I'd save a lot of water because I'd have to transport it to my parents and it would be too much. Too heavy. So maybe like... bleach ? Knowing how to get water and purify it? A life straw ? I dont know lol...

Basically I talked to my parents who think I'm kind of crazy and they said they would come get me if things got bad. So I'm gonna try and gather enough to bring in 1 car ride... to cover myself.

They are actually really smart in that they know how to.grow foods, my dad has weapons and they are kind of hippies in a sense lol I dont know how to explain but they like camping and have basic survival skills. Dad has lots of first aid training and is a carpenter type thing... anyways I'm trying not.to fully rely on them, and also I know they wont be FULLY prepared cause they doubt... I'll try and tell them to start putting water aside. Hopefully they do and I'll get enough food for me.and some.medical supplies and I guess other things I think of.. or you guys mention.

Was thinking a radio.. matches? Candles? Flashlight... things like this.

Thanks again ♡

I have a variety of battery free crank flashlights. They use a capacitor instead of a battery. As long as they don't break, you'll always have light.

This one is the cheapest and they are available on Amazon. Just type "capacitor flashlight" to find them.

Makes sense. All of what you're saying. Ugh thanks again. I'm really shy so I wasn't sure about posting but I'm glad I did.

I'll do just that. Focus on food and water. Focus on prepping it to be quick to grab to go to my parents. Focusing on keeping it secret and away from roommates.

I do love my cats too much to get rid of them early on. Only would consider later when I can no longer take proper care and would set them free...

Thankfully I'm in a small town like I mentioned...parents live even farther from town so really not a lot of people around and they have a forest behind their house. Lots of deer and stuff always show up in their back yard. They also have a woodstove in the house so that's probably good... I dont here.. only electric heat.

Anyways I'm trying not to panic but to be rational and prepared as best I can be. If this doesnt get bad well going forward I'm going to prepare more because I see now if something did happen, I'd be screwed.

Also I really appreciate your kindness in all these replies.

:)

my advice differs

Do you have a car? Is there one you could borrow? If not, does a close party such as a brother or sister or cousin? If so, join up with them. Buy yourself a mask and have some glasses on hand and gloves.

I wouldn't do anything yet

If things get bad, proceed to your parents with your car and possible partner. On the way, hit up a grocery store for anything they DON"T HAVE ALREADY that they will need in the next month.

(wear a mask, and glasses. even if stopping for gas.)

Remain at parents until the thing dies down, unless hospital is necessary.

You're not going to be able to do this on your own.

Even "super preppers" won't make it as loners, unless they intend to get lost in the woods for a few years.

You should start thinking about where you want to be when they apply the "lockdown".

Start with that, talk to the people you will be with, then think about what preps you need to have on hand to "lock the gate" and not come out for six months. Pool your resources with the others, whether it's parents, boyfriend, etc.

You’re a smart girl.

I so agree that prepping now will = your roommates can take.

And you’re very lucky - parents who live in the country is a great advantage! Your cats will be fine there.

*Food, basic medicine especially Vitamin C and fever reducers

*consider seeds

No kidding say a prayer verbally out loud in your car to Heavenly Father before you go shopping that you will have wisdom and not waste money.

Consider that prayer again in a goodwill/ second hand store chances are you don't need more stuff but IDK

Also whatever car you will be depending on should have an oil change or extra filters from an auto store.

Bags of flour salt and big tub of lard. You can make tortillas with that. Big tin of big chocolate mix. Just mix with water. Little bags of koolaid to keep things from getting boring. Big bag a sugar as well. You can mix that with rice for a desert.

Thanks all

Parents live about 20 mins away out of town.

I live in the heart of town (100k population) across the street from hospital (can throw a rock from my bedroom and hit hospital)

I dont have a car. Dont have a partner.

My parents already agreed they would come and get me so I'll just prep and hide a bit in my closet. A plastic tub or 2 worth of stuff...

Seems they have more than I thought. A well, weapons, woodstove, are out in the country... have basic knowledge. They dont prep or believe in this stuff but they were aware when I msged mom anyways, that things arent right, could get bad and are worse than what they are telling us.

I'm on my way to walmart with my roomate, hes driving me. Only way to.carry these things. It's okay, I'd leave before things got bad and he thinks I'm literally insane for doing this... I know he wouldn't steal it because I'd leave before he would really think it was bad enough to do so. Also I have a butterfly knife at home and I do know how to use it... I'll sharpen it a bit. I keep it by my bed. I'm also planning on moving upstairs to the solo unit I think with it's own bathroom at the end of the month if things arent bad by then. I kicked one of my roommates out so down to 2...less traffic. I will legit follow all this advice so it's super appreciated.

Cats happened by accident. I had only one but ended up rescuing 2 kittens planned on giving them but fell in love...oops.

If you are living with 3 other people, if you are prepping for yourself, you are prepping for them as well. I suggest talking to your parents and hopefully you could prep together at their house using many of the recommendations already made (stocking food, water medicines, etc.). But you also need a bug out bag and a plan to get to your parents house when the time comes to do so.

Good Luck!!!

My mom just told me they are on a well...

Does that mean unlimited water??
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78265046

Yes. I am too. We're good unless the power goes off.
 Quoting: Annie Oakley

On youtube, there were some vids on how to gain access to water in your well. You remove the top cover/parts and you will soon see the pipe going down. To put it short, you can drop a line down with a container small enough to go down the pipe without getting lodged.

No, you will not get as much water as fast as when power is on to draw up the water, but in worse case scenario, any water you bring up is way better than nothing...whats worse is having a well, and not able to get your water.

Probably have to learn not to touch my face, to start eating less now, in preparation... to learn how to manage my food when I need to to know how much to eat not to run out...

Not worried about pads/periods. You can make reusable ones...

Cats I will start feeding them less now too ... just gradually with this stuff .

Again, If it doesnt happen, great... but if it does...better to be prepared as best I can now with what I have I guess.

Forgot to mention, I also have a well, and during the 5 days our power was out, I plugged in the cord to our generator and got some jugs filled up.

Years ago, we had an electrician rig up the power wire near our storage tank for us to actually use alternate power for the well.

So, many folks probably will not be able to simply plug in their pump to draw up water. For us, it was worth paying someone to rig that up.
