Why do people say "You know" so much ?

I find "you know" to be one of the interesting nuances of languages.
English speakers say it all the time. But then when I lived in Romania, I heard them say "shti" all the time which is their equivalent.
Try talking to a snowflake nowadays. If they don't say "like" in every other word you have yourself something special.
