When you aren't forced by your government to live in crowded metropolitan areas like in your case, you need a septic system. It's sad you will never know what it's like to live in the country on 20 acres away from all the noise, pollution and mobs of people loosing their minds when the power goes out.

I also put Rid-x down the septic tank every month. Plus I do not use my garbage disposal. Due to government laws and rules most septic pumpers stopped doing this. We only have one company that handles multiple counties. I paid him cash so I didn't pay full price.

Complete bullshit, we have a drop off site about 5 miles from our house trucks still pulling in and out. And BTW 3 years is overkill for a septic system. Our guy said 5 years is more than adequate for our household.

It's not anything to worry about. Before it became mandatory to have it pumped I went over 30 years without having it pumped out. When it was pumped the guy who did it said it was still in good condition and had been breaking down the waste just fine. He told me I could have even gone a few more years.

2 people in the house for 20 years. had it pumped after 15 years (5 years ago). the guy said it looked fine; of course, he followed that up with "would you like to schedule your next 'every 2 year pump out' now"

Rid-ex once a year. 1-2lb copper sulfate every couple years to kill tree roots that try to get in.
we don't use garbage disposal or put in any non-septic safe materials. filter was clean too.

There is a chart, I do mine every 15 years. Rid Ex users stop, Rid EX is BAD for your system, don't believe me ask your local health dept.

Don't worry, toilet paper will not exist after 3 months of SHTF and your septic system will be much happier for it.

Also, if septic pumping companies are no longer operating then most likely the water system will be down.

If you have a well and a generator, I doubt you have enough fuel to keep that well operational long enough for your septic system to shit the bed.

It's pretty easy to poop outside, too. Just buy one of those seats with handles on the sides meant to go over a regular toilet for old people.

Go out in your backyard, scoop out two shovel fulls of dirt... then poop in the hold and cover up when done.

After a while, you will find that you have to move pretty far out in the woods to dig a hole and not find a previous heater, but maybe at that point it's time to dig a hole for an outhouse.

Was already on my to-do list. Am anticipating more family members staying here if things get bad in town. And that might cause problems with the septic system if they're here very long.

For those of you making fun, and who live in town, I suggest you research on the internet what to expect from YOUR sewer system when the city system goes down. Do you have a shut off valve on the line from your house that connects to the city line? If you're in an apartment building, do you have a shut off between your apartment and the others in your building??? Go look at news reports after Hurricane Sandy - lots of people stranded in highrise buildings with no power or sewer service. Nice folks that they were, they were shitting in the hallway!

No WC salt either and put a filter on your washing machine..

well most tanks are 500 gallons which with a dozen washing loads and showers overflows into your drainage filed in one week
but if he t has been 5-7 years then. this is good advice

Honestly it depends on the size of the system and the about of people using that system.

For some it might be one year(such as a commercial location in a rural setting,like a restaurant).

If you have two in a house hold with a system build for 6,you can probably go 5 or more years.

If you have 6 people and the system was build for 3 then you might get 2-3 years.

Point being it varies by design and number using it.
