The right amount of ammo gets you the longest life expectancy. It could perhaps be the new currency.

You might be right. In the old west, the cost of a glass of whiskey was 12 cents. That was the price of a bullet as well. If a cowboy was on his ass and broke, he'd exchange a bullet for a glass of whisky. It became know as a "shot" of whisky.

For me, I'm sure my extensive collection of Star Wars figurines will keep flush.

Re: Preppers are you prepared for 3 years?
I watched contagion last night . At the part matt damon is in line with the army handing out men's And they ruin out and the people are rioting and looting........ I ordered some freeze dried foods. Beprepared.com they did have a posting at the top of website saying delayed or out of stick items will be filled when they are back in stock. But nothing I purchased said out of stock. #10 cans of chicken beef and tvp beef and mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. If I do get an email saying my purchases are delayed I'll post back here about it. I should have bought that home freeze dryer. I still might while foods relatively cheap. What's a whole chicken 5 to 8 bucks. 30 days times 8 240 bucks extra for a month of chicken. It's like 50 bucks for a number 10 can of freezedried meat. I try buy tvp and real meats. Tvps like 17 a can. I might just bite the bullet and buy a home freeze dryer. Never have to throw a meal away. What say u glp.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72601236

The freeze dryers I've looked at were approaching 4k. I can buy a ton of foods and dry can them in the oven for that. Maybe your mileage will vary?

Yeah its alittle pricey but I'm single and no mortgage or car note.

Re: Preppers are you prepared for 3 years?
according to US exec 3551-13 this will last until 2022!
"NARR/REF A IS THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES’ NATIONAL HEALTH SECURITY STRATEGY 2019-2022"
Thread: Martial Law DOOM: US Northern Command initiating executive order 3551-13 (Update pg 9) >> Full transcript of message to US Marines (Page 9)

The German Bundestag paper also mentions 3 years! (find it early on in the main CV thread)

Most people think they are prepped because the have 2 weeks or 2 months of food!

rethink your strategy here!

Only the fandago rangers will survive this!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78165255

Three years means we are all homesteaders and fending off raiders and breathing toxic air ala fallout.

The progression is.
1. Social distancing
2. Self quarantining
3. supply chain disruption
4. Food supply chain disruptions (The farmers are dead or not working nor is the entire big food manufacturing and supply chains)
5. Rule of law breaks down
6. The nuke plants stop getting the preventative maintenance they need
7. The grid goes down
8. Spent Fuel at Nuke plants start burning (for months) polluting our atmosphere with Cesium 137 making life on earth short and hard for a couple hundred years.

Lets hope we don't hit the WROL phase line, getting back from that point will be nearly impossible. If we do cross it, it's critical the grid stay up so the cooling infrastructure is in place at the Nuke plants else our air globally will become toxic as all that spent fuel burns off spewing tons and tons of Cesium 137 into the air...

Re: Preppers are you prepared for 3 years?
You don't have to prep for 3 years, you only need to prep for about 6 months. By then 90 percent of the population will have starved to death and if you manage to survive that long you have the resources to yourself and anyone else who managed to survive. If you are close to a body of water, know the local edible plants and have shelter you can make it. Start reading up on survival now. SAP manual is good, also Wildwood Wisdom, and make sure you buy up lots of seeds and have a fishing rod, bow and arrow or crossbow, or a slingshot for weapons for hunting.

Survival mode, you have to throw all societal rules out if you want to make it.

This is what kills me about preppers, they dont realize they will be the targets for the mobs....and a rifle isnt any match against a volley of flaming arrows.

I am in LA so water is my problem, Will the water company provide water without chlorine? As it comes from china!

If you live in LA you have more problems than just water. You have about 10 million people that would just as soon kill you as look at you, if you have food and their children are starving. All your 'stuff' is like Reese's peanut butter cups to a rat, completely irresistible.

If I (still) lived in LA and had a bug out place with a river in the back yard, I would be hauling myself and ALL my stuff out there within the week. Have you not seen all the comments and articles mentioning martial law? Once it's announced you'll never be allowed to leave. This is called the "long-pig lure" tactic of stretching your provisions.

Also do not be too paranoid, govs know that:
1: Those prepped will not cause trouble when TSHTF, they will go silent in their homesteads and not go out to loot and shoot like the masses. Governments care about keeping order, that is their job. Those that to not show up to the troubles are not of any primary concern to gov.

2: Gov. will not come and take your tuna cans. Even a well stocked prepper is not a relief when it comes to feeding the hordes.
Their primary goals will be the bigbox distribution centers, food makers and storage and the farms. That is where the big mass of available calories is.

Grid, oil, food&water.

Since we a talking TOTAL DOOM on this thread, how about watching a quick clip from the movie, "The Road".

If you have not seen "The Road" then you have not seen the most terrifying DOOM movie ever.

In this clip, the Father and Son find a Fallout Shelter loaded with supplies. Apparently, whoever built it and stocked it up did not survive long enough to use it, so.....

Wouldnt surviving over 3 years require you to be immune to the virus? What are the odds that withing 3 years you would not catch the virus from someone who had it at some point? I heard that those who once get it stay infectious forever? I wonder if thats true..Also, even if you self-isolate for three years, what about after that? The virus is not gone or is it? Hasnt it become the new normal influenca? There are still so many questions regarding what the virus is like and whats going to happen with it. Mutations ect..What are your thoughts on these topics?

Re: Preppers are you prepared for 3 years?
Here is a great example of what one can achieve when necessity arises. Back in February 2015, A cold front with snow was moving in. While the wife and daughter slept, I stayed up all night working through the snow and built the structure in the image linked below. The framework was constructed with persimmon trees, the uprights placed into 3 ft holes. No nails were used in the frame. It was lashed together using jute twine. Old tin roofing panels were placed around it in the main section 3 levels high over the top of heavy, waterproof canvas. The section on the right was added one day later and it open on top where we cooked over wood as well as storage for wood, tools, etc. The green tarp was used as the door. Water was hauled in from a spring fed creek about 300 yards away, filtering was unnecessary. The land, being in a valley within the Oauchita Mountains not far from a 1600 ft mountain, provided an abundance of deer, hogs and turkey. Note, also, there is an antenna placed on the top center that provided reception to provide radio, the radio being a hand-cranked type or using solar cells for other purposes. Further, an outdoor toilet can be constructed using a potty chair with a 5 gallon bucket under it and something to cover the poop after use, such as sawdust, clay, dirt, etc. This is something we had to do while living here. This is what my family and I had done for 2 years, living like this. No electricity, no water, no cell phone service unless hiked the 2 mile path to the top of the mountains. There were difficulties, at times, but we overcame everything that came at us. If we can do this for 2 years, then three wouldn't be a problem. We have the experience to do it even if it is necessary to fall back to the stone age and knap my own arrowheads for hunting (which I did at that time), make cordage, chop wood, prepare food. And, there may be times when you don't have what you need and no way to get it. No problem, necessity is the mother of invention. A solution can be developed for any problem thrown our way.

Here is the structure I build in less than 24 hours total building time (minus little modifications added when the need arose).

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78482973

For starters, prepping doesn’t mean storing years of canned goods in your pantry. This is what your buddy Mr. Kaven from Colombia (me) is doing:

1. 20 chickens and a few roosters. That’s a dozen eggs per day and a chicken a week to eat.

2. An enormous garden with items that grow fast and in quantity. Not tomatoes.

3. Dig a large hole, filled the bottom with cement and stocked it with tilapia.

4. A property with well water

THIS is how you prep. Yeah, the guns and ammo and canned food are all nice and dandy, but you need to actually produce food in order to survive long term.
Like I told my ex-wife, I said: honey, I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that, it’s all in the reflexes…

Re: Preppers are you prepared for 3 years?
I have a three month rough harsh growing season that needs to supply me the rest of the year. I plant what I like to eat for a long winter. Lots of potatoes for hash browns with my farm eggs, soups, mashed, baked etc and enough to plant the next year. I start my seeds now in the house with me for two months, grow lights and mylar, then outdoor covered cold frame when snow melts, then in the ground in June.I love salsa, grow everything and can it up in the fall.fall. I will have edible fresh tomatoes into December and freeze extra peppers chopped ready to use. I plant onions, and garlic, herbs I dry or freeze blends and pestos. I will freeze the berries, make jam out of last years left over frozen berries.
Plenty of carrots, beets, cabbage, hard squash, pumpkins, that will last most of the winter. And some fun summer stuff that does not store well. Some stuff I can or freeze if it does not store well for winter.

Funny how one year one thing will do great and not other stuff and the next year some other thing will thrive and other stuff not so good. Every year turns out different even though I do it the same way. Nature has it's own way, not my way.
I also harvest wild plants for winter.

And during the heat waves around 100 deg F in mid summer I have to shade them with tall tenting the wind storms love to rip apart. Mid summer huge hail storms can be a problem but most will recover. The sun flowers take the hardest hit from the wind and hail storms and I have to stake them, I also have to cover the heads in the fall to protect from rain when the seeds start to mature. A lot of work but good nutrients, protein and good oil, fun snack and the chickens love them too.

A heavy rain can wipe out and wash away newly planted seeds. You only make that mistake once. Make sure you have run off trenches.
All pests and insects have to be dealt with daily, they can take over in a few hours and destroy your crops.
A deer, cow, moose or bear that breaks through the fence at night can wipe out your garden in one night. I have back up motion detectors with an alarm that goes off next to my bed.

It takes years of experience and practice to grow your own food.

The plants need to be fed at least once a week. I make my own plant food garden tea.
