Perhaps maybe it wasn't a great serpent the Mayans saw consume the stars, but a great worm, or wyrm, a winged dragon without arms or legs. But perhaps the wings are just metaphors for the lack of gravity in space, at least, with something that can bypass earth's gravitational field, by being able to literally blot out the sun.
