Outbreak's pace is seen slowing in China

Mainland China currently has seen more than 70,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to the World Health Organization. And while the country has suffered the majority of deaths associated with the outbreak, health experts in China say there are signs that the pace at which the virus is spreading might be slowing down.

As NPR's Emily Feng reports from Beijing:

"Today's numbers from China's national health commission show that the rate at which new cases reported outside Hubei province, where the epidemic has been concentrated, has dropped for two weeks. China's top state epidemiologist said earlier this week that he expected the outbreak to peak sometime in April.
"However, distrust in official state statistics is still high. Hubei in part has the largest share of virus cases in China because it is the only province that discloses so called clinical cases — symptomatic patients who haven't tested positive for the virus. Other provinces are mandated to collect such data but have not disclosed these types of cases publicly."

No, that is the initial reporting, I was looking for the confirmation. There was a lot of chatter about how it could be that these folk had encountered someone and gotten infected long after coming back from Wuhan, wherein they would have only been infected the standard few weeks instead of 90+ days.. 3 months. 3 months! Was there even a virus 3 months before?

How do they know that the newly infected people did not come in contact with another human for 42 days? Not possible.

There are some that are intentionally infecting others, probably in 14 days.

Come on now, our doctors and virologist are the best the world has to offer, no way should anyone be questioning their superior understanding of the situation. If they cleared them it’s case closed no questions asked.

I've written something in two threads - one last night and one earlier today, and not a single comment on it. I'll tell you and this thread, Adytum, and see if the subject here sparks any interest.

Yesterday I spoke with a pharmacist friend, asking how long til medications will no longer be in the pipeline from China as result of factories being shut down. In the course of the conversation she said that a friend who works at the hospital told her we had already a person with covid-2019, who had been hospitalized for treatment and had since been released. Nothing on where or how disease had been contracted, nor if there are tracing of contacts or quarantine.

This is a very small, economically-depressed town. No world travelers here, I wouldn't think. Very small hospital. There is no logical reason covid-2019 should be here.

No question that a three-month contagion risk adds exponentially to the threat we are under, both the country as a whole and every large city or tiny town where the illness has been found. Knowing nothing about this person, whether she/he lives in this town or another even smaller town nearby, where she/he shopped, nothing whatever. Door pulls or knobs, ATMs, card machines, merchandise, cash being passed around between stores and customers - there's no end to the awful possibilities.

Of course I will not go out again without mask and gloves - and I wear large glasses so eyes are basically protected. In fact, I would not go without even if I did not have a seriously compromised immune system.

I hope this awakens thought in people that the dreaded illness may be in their town, next door to them, in their hospital, pharmacy, grocery store, bank, big box store, their children's schools.
