This is why I drive a car 26 years old that I can largely repair myself. While many parts may be made in China, there are also FEWER older cars still on the road which means there's a good supply of those parts sitting on warehouse shelves. While today it's rare to find a "car-cass" in a salvage yard that I can cannibalize for my old beater, the days of strolling into an Auto Zone for a rebuilt alternator are not gone yet, nor soon will be. I've also learned over the decades to keep a few cheaper parts [like sparkplugs and radiator hoses] onhand for emergency repairs.

Umm 26 year old computers are slow.

Well, I wasn't talking about PC's, now was I? It sounds like you've never lived in a world without a computer on your desk or in your hand. I HAVE, and so has anybody over the age of 50... [Hell: I still remember when electric typewriters and color TV's were rare and expensive] which means we'll be able to adapt far more easily than you can ever imagine.

And my old '93 Mazda can still hit 75 in about ten seconds... but that's NOT the point. Take this hint from a guy who's pushing 70 - SLOW DOWN your life and learn to enjoy it a little bit more along the way [I don't even own a cellphone]... you'll live much longer if you do, particularly in the near-future. You've been programmed [or have doen it to yourself!] into thinking that everything in your life has to be NOW and the FASTER the BETTER. And that's just pure unadulterated bullshit.

Yes sir, all of my vehicles are paid for and my truck is almost 20 years old. I can fix anything o it myself and there is a metric fuckton of parts for it in the junk yard.

This song is playing in my head when I hear the global supply chain starting to fail and all the domino effects.

Wow that is funny. I was going through page two of this thread. Went outside to feed the dog, and this song started going though my head. I come inside, finish page two, go to page three and see this... Odd.

We’ll be fine. We will produce everything we need in months. We are the USA!

We can ramp it up.. In half a year... As long as we don't get sick.
 Quoting: Leroux

But we charge more, so items we used to get from China will now be double (or more) in cost. That's great because the money goes to US working families in the long run but sticker shock will start to set in soon.

Yes, but it will last ten times as long and you will know where it came from.

Refrigerated ships full of frozen food - known as ‘reefers’ - are unable to enter Chinese ports because berths are full and therefore cannot tap into electricity chargers. There is a logjam caused by the critical shortage of dockers and drivers. Meat supplies are spoiling at sea.

The US Agriculture Transportation Commission said the Pacific supply chain has been badly “compromised” and logistical headaches are building up as US ports as well. There will soon be an acute lack of containers in both American and European ports as the finely-tuned regime of world maritime transport goes haywire

I work for a packaging manufacturer, everything folding carton we manufacture at home but all our sturdy rigid boxes come from China and we have no word when we’re getting another round of supplies.

I went to Best Buy the other day and noticed some shelves are thinning out, I talked to one of the guys and he said they have plenty of TVs as those are all made a year out in advance but the big companies like Sony and Samsung have shuttered their distribution warehouses?

It’s already been happening a few weeks now and picking up pace.

Many small businesses are going down the gurgler here, a lot due to lack of Chinese tourists.
One store, who sells local pure honey, has now not only got very few customers, but now can't get orders of bags and packaging to put purchases in.

That's just the way fate works. It has a malicious sense of humor. It was like time I lost my job and my 1 year old computers motherboard decided to die shortly afterwards. It was also a few days after the warranty on the damn thing expired too!

So all the chicken & pork we ship over there to be 'processed' by the Chinese slaves adding cancerous chemicals, that all won't be coming back to the states?
That's good.
Process the food HERE withOUT cancer causing chemicals. More American jobs, healthier food.

Decades of a generally culturally, politically liberal world, with a lot of safe spaces, "I'm okay, you're okay" political correctness and CNN-type normalcy bias, have created a form of Frankenstein monsters. Or just the opposite of a man-made creature with a lot of strength and stamina.

Think of a bunch of Barack Obamas throwing out a pitch at a baseball game. Or his wife growling, Hillary cackling and Biden/Buttigeg/Sanders complaining, "you didn't build that."

By the way, the People's Republic of Orwellian-1984 China is very much a creature of berserk-leftist orientation.

From Australia:

I talked with an IT operations manager for a major Australian bank this evening, they are finding it near impossible to replenish supplies of a range of essential consumables and spare IT inventory items. The China pipeline has stopped. I'd say we are weeks away from a cliff.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78499677

Can you share how self-sufficient Australia actually is? As dynamic as your people and nation are known to be I would expect that in most areas you'll be just fine, especially since your nation is the only continent really isolated unto itself and has long-ago adapted to the vagaries of relying upon foreign imports.

My concern would be lack of fuel, for transporting goods around the country.

This article explains some of it:

I'm looking ahead to fall.

Lots of kids gonna need shoes all at once. It seems that first day back to school every one needs a new pair of shoes.

Shoes are needed by the millions every day. There are a handful of American shoe manufacturers left and their shoes are very pricy.

If I owned a shoe business right now, I would start working 24/7 and ramping up the production.

Sewing up back packs would be a nice side job for making some money.

School supplies are going to be tricky this coming year too.

Coffee pots of all kinds, might be hard to find and you know how important your coffee is...

Looking ahead is what you want to do now. If you have growing kids or grand kids a new pair of shoes that fit, or jeans, or even socks will be well received next Christmas.

Also, sugar is on a world shortage basis right now. Invest in a few jelly beans and hard candies. They can be stored for a long time. They can dispel depression for a little while.

Most of the young have no idea how to survive without a phone a tablet and takeout. I would venture a guess that over 90% of people younger than 40 don't know shit from apple butter about growing, hunting, fishing, fixing or building. They all "learned to code". I want to see them code their ass into some food and do basic repairs on a house. It's gonna come home to roost for those smart-asses soon and I am going to LMAO and watch them get all they deserve!

ILYS-dude

Can you imagine what he could do if people would just leave him the Hell alone? As it stands right now we're once again leading the global pack and in a much better position to deal with whatever is shoved into our face. The only thing lacking is genuine unity and once the remaining distractions are eliminated that may soon follow.

Re: 'Dominoes falling' in global shipping as coronavirus continues to grip China's economy
See my other posts regarding travel and supply chains of our competitors (food ingredient0.

Had another conversation regarding supply chains from China. As of now, there are not problems...but we discussed 2 items. 1. The supply chain for these products from China is about 30-60 days. Add in a little more inventory for some items and you may push this to 80-90 days. 2. For Chinese NY, they built up inventory in advance. So, we added another 10 days of extra supplies to this (even though the plan would have been to absorb these stocks during CNY). But, with diminished demand in China this may offset some.

So, for us, the problems will probably start to be 'felt' in the 60-80 day range. We will see it more in the maritime shipping first before we see it in our supply chains.

We also have had a few majors contact us regarding additional supplies to help mitigate the Chinese suppliers. As of now, only 1 has placed additional orders. Unlucky for us though, we are already at max capacity for our product production so there is little room to help mitigate the failures.....thanks to the Corporate Procurement groups for beating everyone down on price to match a communist regimes production capabilities.

Overall. This is a train wreck. It is going to happen unless China is fully back to work in 10-15 days. I don't think it will be a catastrophe (yet) in the US yet...but there will be impacts and longer it goes on the worst the impacts will be.
