He was my best friend, and I still can't get used to him not being around. Quoting: Irredeemable I decided not to get anymore until spring, because baby chickens in the winter isn't easy. Of course, this winter was very mild and wouldn't have been much problem, but the time is coming that I'm getting ready to fill the coop up again. What kind of chickens are your favorite? I do use them for meat, but my egg layers are very valuable to me and I tend to get attached to them and don't want to eat them. And yes, I did get the coon that killed them. There were two of them actually, both nearly 20 pounds. Caught them in a conibear trap I set in the doorway to the coop. Also cleaned out 4 more possums that I suspect were stealing eggs last summer too. I like getting ex battery hens myself. They always look just awful when you first get them, but seem to appreciate the new lease on life after a few weeks. It's also satifying to watch them turn from scraggly, bald rejects into beautiful backyard hens. They usually start laying again in a month or so and are just as productive as the ones I raised from chicks for a good 4-5 years. I just picked up 12 the other day, red hens who will lay brown eggs. Are they Isa Red? I'm still not sure about all the breeds, I just know which ones lay brown, and which ones lay white eggs. I think there are 6 Isa Red or maybe it's Isa Brown in my batch. Not sure. All brown egg layers, all very heavy egg layers. I've always had very good luck with them. They are also very good when you want to increase your flock, they will normally sit and hatch eggs without any coaxing at all. We are eternal... All this pain is an illusion |

Good job killing the trash pandas Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78383652 Do they lay brown eggs? I'm thinking about Barred Rock this time around, I used to have them as a kid, and I always liked them. These last ones were various mixed breeds, but were great brown egg layers. I will say my most favorite chicken was an easter egger She was killed by neighbors dog. Her name was Gray-V she had the neatest eyes so smart |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78760053 They wont come back I never thought of that. I run electric around my garden for deer, and it's pretty close to the chickens. I could just extend it to run around the chicken fence. That's a good idea. We are eternal... All this pain is an illusion |

The raccoons around here seem so innocent and unassuming. Quoting: TGus Yes. He put up a hell of a fight, but they got him. I caught 2 very large coons in conibears I set in the chicken coop doorway. They both had fresh wounds on them, most likely from my rooster fighting back, but I never did find his body. Nor the other 2 hens they also took out the night before. Also caught 5 possums after that which would explain why my eggs kept disappearing We are eternal... All this pain is an illusion |

[link to www.purelypoultry.com] Thank you so much for this link! We just bought some chicks at the farm store, but I'm wanting to add some of the other breeds. My kids will be so excited! |
