I'm thinking maybe enough food and other stuff to last 3 weeks. Non-perishable of course.

A month of canned goods.
A month of nonrefrigerated food.
More if you want to live to the summer harvest of your crops.

How much food would you need to get to say mid-November when you close the garden?

3 months of protein, carbs, and preferred fats for cooking/consuming. Frozen, canned, dehydrated/freeze dried veggies/fruits also, to last until you can harvest homegrown vegetables/fruits.

Any materials, soil, and seeds needed to grow fruits and veggies that you would like.

Herb seeds as well for growing herbs for spices.

Do not anticipate a quick recovery.

Have a way to cook if electricity and gas utilities go out. Ie rocket stove (outdoor).

Have a contingency plan for summer heat and winter cold...ie rocket mass heater, cob living space, etc.

Have a plan for water, water collection and purification. It's unrealistic to keep/store more than 3 weeks worth of water at a time, and it will taste awful after too long.

DIY with 2 bottles and some activated carbon.
Berkey filtration system
Lifestraw
reverse osmosis
distiller

Consider learning dousing to locate water (I believe you can use metal hangers). Be prepared to dig. There are dirt loosener attachments for portable drills, which can help you dig into the soil with minimal efforts. Make sure you know where your pipes are before digging!

There are youtube videos on all of this information, though likely individually packaged.

Consider what you'll do when you run out of toilet paper. Also, if you need water to flush your toilet, make sure you do have a source for that. I really cannot express that enough.

Have a way to wash and dry your clothes. This might seem silly to have to say, but an ability to hand wash your clothes and bedding is important. Don't dump the water into bodies of water (streams, lakes, ponds, etc).

Good luck to all. God bless. hf

28 days at least.

1/2 a box of pasta or 1 cup of rice per day for 2 people.
2 cans of beans per day or 1/2 cup dried beans. Put dried beans into boiling water (don't bring them to a boil).

That's just basic.

If it comes down to needing more than 90 days of food.

Chances are things will never come back to normal..

so need to create your own food should be planned.

With systemic collase, which is a problem with global pandemics, due to supply chain issues, power outages would begin first by scheduled ones early in the morning, say 2 am to 5 am to conserve natural gas or coal. But one day, it doesn't work at all. Now one could easily lose all the refrigerated and frozen food.

Overeating protein, say the thawing meats, would provide calories but when protein is maxed out, it is eliminated by the kidneys, thus wasted.

If it were not a contagion, one would hastily trade it for canned goods, but that risks infection.

The amount of protein one requires is based on muscular actvity, thus why a weight lifter eats more though there are average amounts for a 70 kg man as a baseline.

This is why canned goods are ideal to avoid this issue. Dried legumes and rice avoid this issue but are contingent on water availability.

Freeze dried is largely forlong term emergency food and is absent fat as it goes rancid, but that means high cost and lower nutrition.

Read nutrional labels carefully like portion sizes which are sometimes are absurd.

Survival buckets can be really a waste of money for savvy folks as the total calories should be 2000 day minimum, but may be 1200. They hope you are ignorant.

A military grade MRE may have 3200 calories due to predicted intense physical activity.

Of course, a wife and two kids aged 7 and 10 are NOT going to eat 2,000/day. But this fudge factor means your food cache will go longer and spoilage or insect infestation or even theft can subtract from the total amount.,

There are whole free LDS reparedness manuals on this which comprehensively discuss not only a food estimation but teach nutrition and offer recipes based on the recommended food. You would be far better off reading an ebook.

It depends how well you tolerate hunger. If things get bad enough that you actually need to eat your prep food, that means there is no other food available, anywhere. If there is no other food available, it is highly unlikely that there is going to be a return to normalcy in a mere three weeks. Why would you put yourself at the mercy of the government, don't you know yet that they don't give a shit about you?

I have come to believe that most people just don't have any imagination, and cannot comprehend a scenario for which they might actually need to have a safe amount of food. I am prepped for a year and a half. If doom comes in the winter, this gives me two full summer harvests to try to get it together on my own steam. By then most of the unprepped would be dead, and those of us left can attempt to help one another. I will not help brigands or thugs, as they would just as soon kill me as look at me in a SHTF scenario.

It's really pretty easy to get prepped on a very basic level, and not that expensive. If you start with 25 pound bags of rice from Costco for under ten dollars a bag, then find a local place that sells 25 pound bags of navy beans or black beans, you can have 75 pounds of beans and 75 pounds of rice for about $100. Find some canned goods on sale and buy them by the case. My local market frequently has canned vegies for 58 cents, and sometimes for 38 cents a can. Cheap insurance. Pick up a few condiments and you are good for months. Rice and beans makes complete protein. Is this a healthy diet? Not particularly, but it will preserve your life.

60-90 days would be safer. Lot's of rice. The problem is the supply chain could shut down. The United States is already preparing for possible pandemic. This includes food, water, medicine, and medical equipment. Stay safe.

If you do not have a balanced diet of essential amino acids, you will induce nutritional deficiency as those play critcal roles in various aspects of metabolism like Kreb's cycle to produce adenosinetriphosphate (ATP).

You would produce listlessness.

One cannot just eat rice.

Example
[link to tools.myfooddata.com (secure)]

That is for white shrt grained rice.

Amino acid profile

Tryptophan
134% RDI
Threonine
111% RDI
Isoleucine
100% RDI
Leucine
99% RDI
Lysine
56% RDI
Methionine
105% RDI
Cystine
232% RDI
Phenylalanine
199% RDI
Tyrosine
124% RDI
Valine
109% RDI
Histidine
109% RDI

Note the low lysine.

Most generally you want beans and rice, or peas and rice, or corn and beans, or lentils and rice, etc. This is called complementary proteins to acqure all the essential amino acids.

If you eat more to get enough lysine, then you waste escess amino acids which cannot be assimilated.

Tissue repair would begin happening. Classcally in children on inadequate protein, their hair breaks easily and this a simple diagnostic.

Poor nutrition would cause two conditions.

Buy rice and beans in bulk. Mylar bags and a bucket with lid and oxygen absorbers. Put rice in bag with oxygen absorber. Iron the bag shut put in bucket. Write date and contents on bucket. Been doin that for awhile now. Beprepared.com has a kit that includes it. U could just buy the mylar bags and absorbers and find a cheaper bucket might save afew bucks. That's long term storage. Just today I made a big pot of chili with beans because I wanted to get used to cooking and eating more rice an beans cause I'd rather do that now . Instead of being 2 weeks into to a shtf situation and being like i hate beans and rice. Also textured vegetable protein freeze dried food is cheap. Compared to real meats. But I ordered a week ago from beprepared.com and still haven't received it yet. They had a message on their site saying do to increased demand........... delayed shipping. That's it. I'm buying a freeze dryer. Do it myself. Harvest right here I come.

Gullible ignorant people might try living on this. Note the portion size is 240 calories per serving. Three meals would give you 720 calories. This is claimed to be a meal replacement BUT it's not. It's a snack portion to supplement only.

If you started examining all of the nutrition, you would find many deficits.

Starving people getting inadequate nutrion and total caloric intake would end up with initially in a malnutrion state then anorexia then progress and damage the heart valves, then worsen into organ failure.

Simultaneously then start having teeth losened and damage the liver and blood cells producing anemia and so get a depressed immune system.
