Could someone explain a wind generator system to me in small words?
I've got someone with a mechanical mind around, but I need to know all the parts (including tools) to put in front of them when the time comes, the power goes out, and they suddenly have nothing else to do but build me a functioning system.

It needs to be enough to charge a laptop etc.
I'm facing the ocean, so I've got plenty of wind.

Probably true for most cases and good to note.

The newer panels do pick up something during cloudy days even.

There are different types of wind kits as well it it seems like your trying to be ready to reverse a washing machine

There's a lot of small (500 watts or less) wind turbine kits available to buy for under $300. Just search for "wind turbine 500w kit".

Basic parts are the turbine, a charge controller, a battery bank, and an inverter.

There are a million youtubes on home made small wind generator systems.

I'm a solar fan for individual homes. Not these solar farms they have going.

Best of luck to you in your search!

Re: Could someone explain a wind generator system to me in small words?
Basics:

1. some kind of fan/turbine (for the wind to blow/turn).
A wind water pump could be a candidate.

2. mechanically connects/turns a small generator (a car's alternator could be candidate).

2) generator's output goes to a charger who, in turn charges a battery

3) some kind of a battery, usually a deep cycle pb.

4) if needed a circuit (inverter) to convert battery's 12/24v
to 110/220V.

That's all.

Basic electrical tools. Wire cutters, large and small, you can use a knife to strip terminals, wire nuts, electrical tape, digital multimeter, selection of screw drivers, a hammer, because one always needs a hammer, open and box end wrenches in a good selection of sizes, crimpers and crimp fittings.

Re: Could someone explain a wind generator system to me in small words?
A wind generator ?

Well if you get a large enough fan, and a big enough motor, the rotating blades cut through the air like a screw. As the fan is stationary it is the air that moves, thus being transformed into actual measureable "wind".

Awww come on, somebody had to say it.

Ever have generator light on your bike? One end touched the tire and it turned as the bike moved and the light came on. The turning of the generator creates the electrical charge that lights the bulb. Multiply that a few million times and that's how every power plant works. Wind, dams, coal, nuclear all turn that turbine, the little one on your bike or Hover can or any power plant. Well except solar...bigger words needed.
