Buy canned stuff, rice, beans, water or a way to filter water.

Buy stuff you will actually use if this blows over.

Look around your house...buy what you usually use...just more of it.

Food, soap, TP, shampoo, tooth paste, etc.

That way you recoup the cost by not shopping for a while.

Peanut butter & crackers is a GREAT prep food! No cooking, fridgitation, and has all the carbs fats and proteins a growing boy needs!

Dry pasta & rice and things to go with it (spaghetti sauce, cans of soup, garlic, cheese, butter, etc).

Buy what you normally would that is non-perishable. Canned food is great, but keep in mind there is usually lots of salt.

Think of what you normally like to eat. What cleaning supplies do you use in a month?

Also consider easy meals to make that do not need to be refrigerated or a way to be heated.

Protein, carbs, fruit & vegetables, snacks, treats & desserts

Plenty of water, juice, alcohol.

Soap & toilet paper.

OTC and prescription meds. Pet food.

Protein is most important. Canned tuna, peanut butter, cheese, oatmeal, dry cereal, milk that's shelf stable, protein bars (I like Kind bars.)

Flavored water is OK.

Also store tap water for cleaning emergencies (if you suddenly don't have running water)

Also store spring water for drinking. It doesn't go bad and you can always use it to make coffee & tea.

Pretty much agree but besides Carbs and Protein you need Fat do buy some olive oil.

You may not “like” rice and beans but rice can sure stretch a meal. Rice w beef or chicken and you don’t need so much beef or chicken. Add some broth and makes it even better.

Don’t tell anyone. In the case of SHTF, you don’t want anyone to know. If they know you have it, you just become a target. Tell no one, and play along.

Your hungry, thirsty, all of that. Never tell anyone you have supplies. You may be the most ready on the block, they know that, when shit gets real, you won’t stand a chance.

So don’t tell anyone shit.

Assume that they will not shut off the water, heat, computer access.

However realize that NOTHING is a 100% guarantee.

I asked Trinity et al about continued computer use and electric light. Possibility of intermittent use depending on where you live.

Bottom line, plan for emergencies with a strong flash light, wet wipes or personal wipes, gallons of tap water, extra wash cloths or paper towels.

Also reading material or something to do to pass the time indoors that doesn't involve electricity or power.

Folks buy canned goods, rice, pasta, flour, oil, peanut butter

But what ever food you do buy be sure to consider the expiration date. For example, evaporated milk has an expiration date no more that a few months ahead, but canned fish like tuna or salmon can have expiration dates for years.

It's not just food you have to buy, but there are other considerations, like storage and how much for how long. How will you prepare meals with your preps? Will you have access to water, electricity, gas ways to cook food? If storing and preparing food is not practical where you are at consider prepping with things that can help you barter (this would be a long term situation) that do not expire or have long shelf life like tobacco, unopened spirits, some medications or supplements.

Lastly there are many tips for prepping on the internet you can find, and not all of it is just about food but other things considered essential for prepping like advice and tips from DHS ( [link to www.dhs.gov (secure)] For example this link I just found by searching for "top 10 items to have for prepping disaster"

[link to modernsurvivalonline.com (secure)]

But don't panic, there's time and good luck.

OP look into WISE foods.

If you can get the older pack do it. They have more salt and are made to have with beans, rice potatoes and much more.

I have all kinds of dried food that will never good bad.

Jarred veggies

Enough rice, sugar, honey, beans, pasta, can salmon. corned beef, meds, vitamins minerals. 5 lever action and bolt action hunting rifles, 2 shotguns, enough ammo for 10 years, cabin on the middle of nowhere, lake with stream, and spring near by...

Thing is every month you should have added to your supplies.

Now it might be hard.

Go to Costco or Sams Club and load up on anything you can use over an extended period. Dried food are best. Salt, peanut butter, oil. Sugar, etc.

Make a list of everything you use daily and buy in bulk.

I would go out and get at least 2 or threerifles, shotguns and ammo first. If it gets bad you will need them. Load up on ammo and make sure you significant other and Children of are know how to use them.

Sorry for grammar and spelling.

Typing from phone.

What's the best way to charge a smart phone if the electricity goes out? (I don't have access to a car.)

Solar charger suggestions on Amazon appreciated.

Also what's the best way to heat a cup of water? Camping stove? Barbecue grills aren't allowed at my gated condo complex. Can't use the fireplace either.

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

Which on this list is the most compact, easiest to use?

Dogfood ie previous poster,

Thanks. Just bought the cheapest solar charger. Will use it when I go camping too. Better safe than sorry.

Now I just need to consider the lightest weight camping stove to heat water for coffee, herb tea, etc. Already have a French Press.
