So are you self isolating yet? When will you start? Would you shop late at night when stores are not crowded?

Re: So are you self isolating yet? When will you start? Would you shop late at night when stores are not crowded?
I'm debating what to do and not do. It is in all the states that border mine, and an hour north of me supposedly.

I run into local stores for milk and bananas sort of thing, but my major prepping is finished. I dont need to go to movies or malls. I want to go to church tomorrow, but one guy commutes pretty far to a city that has it, and two ladies work at local hospitals in cardiac units, so far no CV patients. I am thinking of going and sitting in the back foyer which has better social distancing.

Hubby is still planning to go to work part of the time for meetings, but not much else....the boss said people can work from home as much as possible. Nice guy.

I really want to do a final run to Trader Joe's. Not sure if that is too risky.

My d.i.l.s both work around people and I babysit, so maybe any attempt to self isolate is futile, and I need to just take my antiviral supplements and not even bother trying to self isolate.

So what about you? Are you self isolating, or thinking about it?

We are here.

I had to go out today for about 2 hours worth of running errands.

Entering a store, touching nothing except what I was there to acquire... hand sanitizing and wiping the cart with the anti-microbial wipes supplied...

It was going pretty well until at the last place a guy in the next checkout lane sneezed... twice.

I'm not going out again unless we really need something and by then I'll be beyond worrying about what people think about me wearing an N95. You can't stay home when you're sneezing or coughing? Get used to seeing people defending themselves from your thoughtlessness.

I arranged to telecommute for work and I'm profoundly grateful to have that option.

My wife has a history of serious pulmonary issues including bronchitis, pneumonia and pulmonary embolism. If she gets this bug, it could put her in the hospital very easily or without any exaggeration, in the grave

Re: So are you self isolating yet? When will you start? Would you shop late at night when stores are not crowded?
Chris Martensen, PhD in pathology/toxicology, has been covering this almost daily with the best information available.

He said the tendency of a virus like this is to mutate into a less lethal form. The 1918 Spanish flu was unusual in that the second wave was worse.

Odds are this won't be as bad to catch next winter. So by all means try not to get it this spring.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

NW Florida here. Been stocking up for weeks now. Started self-isolation yesterday. Took early retirement to care for an elderly family member who this virus could kill.

Re: So are you self isolating yet? When will you start? Would you shop late at night when stores are not crowded?
Shopping late at night wont help.

Infected people been in ahops all day breathinv their spores of doom all over.

It stays on surfaces for up to 20 days...and longer if particles infest a feezer.

They will be lurking all over the frozen food for years unless they totally disinfect.

The only hope you have is do NOT lrave your house.

And even that wont work in the end cause the spores..0.3 microns...are AIRBORNE and can travel on the wind for miles.

Sorry to say this but EVERYONE on the planet WILL EVENTUALLY CATCH IT..

EVERYONE...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78571526

Wow...I didn't think about the frozen food freezers
extending the shelf-life of the virus. That's a bummer.

Also, there is a thread from someone trying to be funny
tonight on the board who says: "Don't POP BUBBLE WRAP!"
The gist is that the bubble wrap coming from China--or
any infected area--pumps their environmental air into the
little bumps held by the plastic and if it is popped and
has the virus in there, you could get it. It sounds funny
but it really is NOT that far fetched.

Very concerning. Starting to shop at the very small mom
and pop stores rather than the big grocery outlets...seems
like that COULD help limit the exposure of products to
hundreds of people.

Interesting thread. Thanks.

Re: So are you self isolating yet? When will you start? Would you shop late at night when stores are not crowded?
Yes.

Started gradually weeks back - about 80-90% now. Monitoring the known/perceived threat in my location. If it rises, move to 100%. As of now, no official infections in my state.

Don't need to shop. Planned and acted in advance.

Working the issue of mail now - PO box versus local mail box. Worse case - simply ignore it all.

Bills - few and working to pay them on-line or drop off payment in PO external drop box. The only risk - car trouble during the short run. The risk - low - just bought a new highly reliable vehicle as part of my planning and action.

Good luck.

when the government tells people to just stay home if they are sick, and the government isn't going to pay their bills, guess what people are going to go to work.

I've been 'self isolating' since I turned 50 and wanted

peace in my life.

I just work and stay home. Oh, and take care of my sons

which all I have to do is give one of them money, and give

the other space to 'do his thing' and we're all good...

What was the question again???

Re: So are you self isolating yet? When will you start? Would you shop late at night when stores are not crowded?
I own and live in an adult family home (a private home that houses 6 elderly and vulnerable adult residents). I mass shopped since mid January seeing this thing as a possibility of reaching Washington state where I live because tons of people and Asians fly into Seattle from China daily. Since there were no serious measures to prevent the illness from coming where I live, I have supplies for our home to last us possibly 6 plus months withh b out having to leave the house.
As soon as our local Whatcom County health Dept declares there is a confirmed case in my county, (which probably will be in the next day or two because there are 10 plus pending cases) we will not have anyone coming or going. Already all our residents have cancelled their appointments for the month of March. Our activities leaders have been let go until further notice. We have three live in staff counting me who can work round the clock without leaving the premises so I plan to let my one hourly pay caregiver go due to possible exposure to our residents since she will be working at a large skilled nursing facility.
I hope this will keep us all safe under my roof.

We have been self isolating for over a month now. Finished major prepping on Feb 14th. When we go out now we wear gloves, masks, goggles. We bleach wash all produce for 5-30 minutes depending on what it is, and we wipe all packaged goods with clorox wipes and let dry for 5 minutes before taking inside. We are taking major precautions, but not leaving the house more than once every 2 weeks for basic groceries, gas, propane.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78560562

We are retired and am in the same mindset. I've been having lunch and get-togethers this week with our best friends and family with the idea that we might not see them for a while. The closest "test positive' person is more than 300 miles away so I'm chancing going out this week but probably for the last time. We have about 4 months of food in the house (for two people) and meds and such. When we need to restock I plan to use the "deliver to your car" services offered by Walmart, Target, and Publix. I've set up a decontamination station on our back porch to sanitize all of the food and packages. Let's hope this will be enough!

I started going out less in the middle of this week. I had prepared with buying 90 days worth of supplies in the couple weeks prior. Fridge is full, porch freezer is full, I had to rearrange the pantry to make it not look like a disaster last night it's so full.

I Plan on just catching the Virus.

You think you are going to escape IT???

lol

The sooner I get it and get over it the better. Im mid 50's with no underlying conditions. May as well get it over with.
HELL I may already have it. I had some Flu like crap 3 weeks ago that is still barley hanging on.

From all reports 80% of us are going to get it. It's in Gods hands. Either way I'll be fine but.

I'm more afraid of the FEMA Camp than the virus. Out here i can take care of myself.

I'm retired. I'm adequately provisioned. I can hold up here through spring and summer. But I do have things I need to leave the house for a few times a month. I wish I could just remain isolated, but there are things requiring my physical presence once in a while.

I'm not afraid of this virus. If others have survived, I will too. I'm into my 60s, but I'm still healthy and strong. I just don't want to have to get sick. I've not had the flu take me down since 1991. I particularly hate the congestion caused by being sick, and that scares me more. I can't sleep when I can't breath easily, comfortably, and that leads to mystery.

Has anyone tried doing shrooms while fighting this virus? Did it help? tounge

I am not worried about myself , but I am genuinely concerned about people like my daughter who has scar tissue on her lungs from having Pneumonia before.. or my Step Father who is not in the best of health , or my Mother who is 73. It does scare me that I can lose so much that means everything to me. I think that is also why people are panicking. I am sure if we could all be guaranteed that everyone will catch it but it will be just like a cold.. then we would all carry on. It is the not knowing and what ifs that are scary.

I am pretty much done - I have been prepping and prepping - I just came home from a very big last of the fresh stuff Publix run tonight. I got a mix of goods. I have a turkey in the freezer too, I need to unthaw, cook and break down. This will create more room. I think I have more than enough for myself and my teen son to carry us 4 months easily.

Now I am just wondering when the gym visits stop and when I stop running the Art Club at the High School. I have a feeling these decisions are going to be made above my paygrade so to speak. Meaning just about when I think its done - (one more week maybe) its gonna be declared done and the quarantines will be happening in a cascade.

I would stop the gym visits now. So many bodily fluids and things not being wiped down effectively. Our family loves buying turkeys when they are on sale. It does take a lot of damn room in a freezer, but so much you can do with it and so cheap considering.
