I Miss 1978; I WANT IT BACK AGAIN, NOW!!! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69872958 United States 03/08/2020 04:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was 14 years old, embarking on the PRIME of my life (which, thank GOD, I am still in) and, what can I say, it simply was one of THE BEST ERAS to be a young adult or adult! Quoting: John Titor 911 I was an EXTREMELY PRECOCIOUS child, very much advanced for my age in both physical and mental growth. I was ALREADY getting served alcohol, in bars and liquor stores at age 12! Not that that's bad or good, it just was. I was already 5'12" tall then! I have friends who to this day still do not understand how I did it. Suffice it to say that I was a responsible kid as well and did not overindulge. I would buy beer for other, much older 18 year olds, since alcohol was restricted to 21 year olds in my state then, but not now. I lived the dance era known as "the disco era," which as most of us healthy guys saw it as "a chance to score with chicks." That's why young men and old men alike braved the shaky social risk of actually wearing the correct garb, going to a disco-theque then, with one's girlfriend on their arm AND DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY. It was a lot of fun. I miss it. Every generation misses it's heydey. 1978 was mine. That's all. Giorgio Morodor's "Midnight Express Theme," from the movie and also "Coast To Coast A.M.'s" theme, since 1989! WAT I came in here thinking we would see Miss 1978!?!?! I'm disappointed OP. |

I divorced my ex after over 30 years of marriage. I would like to say I wouldn't give the ass the time of day. But then I wouldn't have my two children, whom I love dearly. So I would probably do the same thing all over again. Quoting: GA Girl Great book you m ight like: [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] "Peace in our time? But as it turns out, 1978 was one of my favorites. I turned 14 that pivotal year and on my birthday I weighed a bulky 101 lbs at a towering 4'11". I was a freshman physics major at UNC Chapel Hill. As if my physical stature wasn't enough to make me conspicuous on campus, I typically lumbered around with ponderous tomes, a white pocket protector packed with colored pens, and a handy multi-scaled ivory slide rule. Somewhat oblivious to the occasional stares, indistinct chatter, and heedless pointing, most days I was preoccupied in classrooms, at colloquiums, or reading in a library. Eventually though, to expand my experience, I embarked on a series of experiments to enhance my social integration. One day, while sitting under a tree on the quad, a guy (I'll call him Joe) accosted me asking, "Hey kid are you lost here at our campus?" I snobbishly retorted, "Indubitably, it behooves me to asseverate that I am here in the resolute pursuit of formal erudition specifically regarding astrospacial quantum mechanics." Instinctively, he responded, "Huh?" I more eagerly clarified, "My mom works now and she lets me audit some classes here for entertainment." Joe, acting as social ambassador, rejoined "Neat. Can I introduce you to some friends?" They were all mostly polisci majors. The guys were humorous and friendly. The tube top girls were hot and loved to pinch my cheeks (facial and posterior). The girls loved it when I'd confide "To me, you're not just another pulchritudinous physiognomy." Over time though, the group discovered that I was the youngest enrolled student; and, thankfully they still accepted me in their affable clique. They invited me to parties ... drinking, smoking, and girls, girls, girls. I was becoming a man. Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird replaced Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 as my favorite musical performance. Hell; still today, I get a flashback buzz when I listen to Freebird. My college years raced quickly as I lived two separate lives. By day, I was a studious nerd engrossed in classroom education or perched at my importunate escritoire. By night, I was a burgeoning party animal engaged in lighthearted banter and alternate passions. By '82, I was a foot taller and 60 pounds heavier. Physically, mentally, and socially I was a completely different person than the one who matriculated four years earlier. Today, my life is vastly more complex and although it's fulfilling in many ways, I sometimes yearn for that carefree year of existential enhancements. 1978 was the year my new life started. Today, like many of you however, I'm ensconced in sustained situational survivalism ... not due to a virus per se, but rather the widespread panic reactions. Nope, I will take the virus over reliving child births, teenagers and the many years of all that. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78570886 Unfortunately, I think you are likely to change your mind on that in about a month or so. At least at my age with heart and lung troubles it will be quick. 1977 was great fun but birth control was not as reliable back then. If I knew then what I know now, oh what a life I could live over. |

They were both good. you just didn't like to dance, that's all. Some disco has a real loud pounding beat and when you move to it, you get taken to another plane of life, another level of good energy and vibes all around you |

At that time I was going into and going out of 8th grade JUNIOR HIGH. There was no such fucking thing as middle school then, where I grew up. I want 1989/1990 back again, NOW! I grew up on the dance music that came after disco, especially FREESTYLE music. |

User ID: 78110098 United States 03/08/2020 07:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Although I LOVE the 70's and 70's music, and how much fun it was to be 8 years old then...let me remind you that it was not all a story book romance. In fact, there were some big FUCKING problems! And, at 8 years old, here are a few things I remembered from 1978. On Halloween, our parents were very worried about people putting needles in our candy. Do you remember that? This was Michigan. There was some kind of weird scare about that. And that went with lick on "fake" tattoos being laced with LSD. So we had to be careful of that. (Who would lace children's lick on tattoos with LSD?) Weird, scary shit. And kidnapping, big fear of children being kidnapped walking home from school. It is still a big secret, but kidnapping was a big deal back then. It was kept very hush hush. Then there was Jimmy Carter, who was the peanut President, and our economy was in the shit. My Dad had a good job, so it never really affected me, but it was depressed. Also, in 1977/78 there was a massive winter with snow piled so high, it was crazy. I actually liked that. And let's not forget...STAR WARS came out in 77/78. And you had to go to the theater to see it, because there was no Beta Max or VHS yet...no HBO or Showtime yet. 1978 was good, because much of the Vietnam Era was coming to an end. We had a family next door adopt a Montagnard child from Vietnam who was my age. He survived the war, his family did not. His father fought with the Green Berets in Laos and Cambodia so he was given special treatment and sent to the U.S. as an orphan. He grew up to be the toughest running back on our high school football team. As for music, my father had a great audio system in his car, with an 8-track player. He liked to listen to the Carpenters and shit like that. We also had a station wagon and I always got stuck in the way back because my sisters got the back seat. The way back was hot as hell in the summer on a long drive. My Mom and Dad and sisters had all the air conditioning...I got a full blast of HOT Sun! At 8 years old, I first remember liking girls. Before then, girls were just a pain in my ass. Then suddenly, for no reason at all, I suddenly saw girls as very attractive. Well, not all girls, but suddenly I was in love with hot girls. Not much has changed since then. And then, almost in a flash, it was 1980. Ronald Reagan was President. And then...he got shot! Yeah, I remember 1978, as an 8 year old and it was damn good times. We played kick-the-can outside until dark, we climbed trees, and played baseball, and just played outside until our Moms' called us in for dinner. We also played war, using sticks for guns, and we had no problem practicing taking down the neighborhood in a full D-day assault. And, when we came home from school, Mom was home, because Mom took care of the house. Dad got home a little after 6pm. Dad's job was more than enough for us to live on, Mom did not need a "job". We always went on a two week vacation somewhere every summer. I didn't know it then, but I know it now, that 1978 was a perfect year. In just a few years, everything was going to change, but only in hindsight can I see what happened. In 1981, George Bush tried to kill his President with an assassination and he actually succeeded in a way. George Bush was now President of the United States, and Reagan was just the front man. Nixon was taken out. Kennedy killed. MLK killed. Malcom X killed. Rock Stars killed. They killed everyone who got in their way, or needed a new identity. You see, you cannot talk about 1978 without talking about what came before and what came after. But, overall, 1978 was a wild, wonderful year! No jobs, not even in gas stations and quick stop marts. Interest rates were huge. We used to have to decide between gas for the junk car or groceries, and that was with two adults working full time jobs. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21423850 No thanks. We have lots of problems today but I would not go back in the 1970's for anything. You were a child and your parents covered your expenses. And you probably had good parents too. Agreed. Not only is OP 5'12" (what a freakin' maroon), but he was seemingly as clueless back then as he clearly is now. Bronx Mac |

User ID: 78130206 United States 03/08/2020 07:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hi OP. I too miss 1978. I was 12. I was fortunate enough to have a fun and somewhat half way decent childhood, thanks to my mom, but not so much thanks to my alcoholic dad (but he's changed and I forgave him a while ago) I also miss 1970 thru 1980. But I realize that life does not revolve around what "I" personally want and prefer. Now its in the past and its gone, but with good memories. Time to continue being an adult and living in the present. There are many, many, many generations that came before us that chose to remember he past, but live in the present. Its time to move on, with good memories, but move forward Last Edited by FireSteel on 03/08/2020 07:55 PM |
