Nine years ago today, a powerful earthquake & tsunami killed 18,000 people & triggered a nuclear meltdown at Fukushima. Japan is now in the midst of a new crisis, on what was supposed to be a banner year.

I was living in South Korea at the time, which is only a few hundred miles and sometimes downwind from Japan.

Now both countries are dealing with this new crisis.

It was their own militarists that got goaded and suckered into WWII.

They really had nobody to blame but their own leaders for the outcome of that one.

The meltdown had me pretty freaked out.

When the wind would change and blow our way, sometimes schools had to be closed.

I was a teacher in South Korea for five years.

I was taping plastic over my windows and eating seaweed soup and drinking red wine like a madman.

My wife probably thought I had become unhinged. Went through the novel flu ("Shinjong Flu") over there, too -- me and my infant daughter at the time.

Very scary.

Well, the people in Japan and especially Fukushima and the surrounding area had it much worse than I.
