I wish they’d just quarantine the whole state for a month! Seems like all the tourists fled. Was all over the island today and it’s very very slow. Airport was totally empty. Going to be an interesting year. Aloha

It's serious. Half of Hawai'i's economy is tourism dollars. That is evaporating.

I am on Oahu now and swung by Waikiki beach earlier. Beatiful, sunny day and the beach was nearly empty.

Got busy with work and totally forgot about this thread.

Aloha fellow Hawai’i peeps hf

Thanks for the on the ground reports! Maui here, basically no TP, hand sanitizer or disinfectants at many stores. My job is essential and doesn’t rely on tourism but most do. Already hearing about layoffs in hotel and hospitality industries. We’re all in this together. Interesting times indeed! I wonder if the Common Kings concert April 3rd will happen?

Canadian doctor tests positive for coronavirus after returning from Hawaii trip

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Canadian doctor has tested positive for coronavirus after returning from a vacation in Hawaii, according to hospital officials in Ontario.
Hamilton Health Sciences said Wednesday that the radiation oncologist arrived back in Canada on Saturday. She was then tested on Monday, and received confirmation of a positive test on Tuesday.
The hospital said the doctor, who’s in her 30s, has been in self-isolation at home. However, she was working at the Juravinski Cancer Center on Monday and saw patients and interacted with colleagues.

The state and Canadian health officials haven’t released any additional details on her itinerary.

As soon as they announce the detection of community spread, we’ll start hearing about school closings, community lockdowns etc.. I’m guessing by mid next week.

Hawaii reacts to alternate ways to show aloha during coronavirus outbreak

The coronavirus outbreak is changing the etiquette when it comes to how people greet one another.

In Hawaii, for many, that means switching out a hug, kiss of on the cheek, or a handshake for something with less physical contact like a shaka or an elbow bump.

The Hawai’i Department of Education is cancelling all school and department-related travel to the US mainland and international destinations until the end of the 2019-2020 school year, effective March 12, 2020.

The announcement came in a letter to all Department of Education staff, faculty, parents and guardians, from state Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto.

“We recognize that Hawaiʻi state Department of Education sponsored student travel and professional development are important to overall academic design. In light of the evolving COVID-19 situation, we need to take additional precautionary steps to ensure the health and well-being of our school communities,” Dr. Kishimoto said.

In the letter Dr. Kishimoto noted that there are school trips scheduled to depart Hawaiʻi on Wednesday, March 11. She said, “Although these trips will not be bound by the upcoming department-wide cancellations, parents have the right to modify their travel plans accordingly.”

Maui here.

There were a dozen empty spots in the whole foods parking lot where there are usually zero spots. Costco was packed as usual.

Seems normal
