The media is in a unique position to engineer social behaviors in a way that benefits themselves directly. Therefore, we should always look at what they say and do with extreme skepticism.

Imagine this:

We have a media that is basically the fan club and cheerleaders for a particular political party.

That particular political party has little to no hope of getting their principal candidates elected.

However, if the media can create and compound a crisis that frightens the public and causes them to stay confined at home glued to the “news” channels for extended periods of time, then the media has a real chance to further indoctrinate their captive audience. Also, the media would have an incredible product to sell—more viewers than ever.

Well, you don’t have to imagine it. It’s happening right now.

It’s often been said in the last week or so that the cruise industry and the airline industry (among other industries) may need to be “bailed out” because of this whole Kung Flu situation. But have you considered:

The coronavirus is the media bailout.

Ratings were in the tank. People en masses hate and distrust the media. TV “news” networks were having their worst financial times in history. Conventional media organizations were laying people off.

But look! There is hope for the media! Now they will have the largest captive audience ever and advertisers will be coming back on board in droves.

Honestly at this point social media is doing more damage than MSM, they're both shit but social media is causing far more panic.

I honestly Agree. So much Fear talk, panic, DOOM and Gloom. I understand this sites history with DOOM desires but as Human beings we are meant to show Resilience and Courage.

Its as if we are being turned to docile creatures.

I don't look at media, who does, do you folks actually watch these talking heads daily? I see only GLP and DM, NYP, NYT every few months and that's it, there is nothing to read per say anyway, the articles are for 5 year olds and most written by AI. I actually read a book for the first time in decades, ironically, The Road for those of you who know that novel. The net in general has lost it's appeal, the old days were so glorious. All gone now to apps I don't want to use.

I don’t do any social media stuff so I’m pretty out of the loop when it comes to that.

I do, however, listen to the major news networks (I’m a trucker and I use satellite radio to listen to CNN, MSNBC, Fox and others as I drive). Lately, it’s been a 24-hour nonstop coronavirus panic party with the constant narrative of how it’s all Trump’s fault. It’s clear that the media actually wants people to panic. CNN has even changed their intro music (like when they come back from commercial break) to be more ominous and menacing.

The narrative that they are pushing is basically this:

No one can get tested for the virus because Trump royally screwed the pooch and when your grandma dies of pneumonia because she couldn’t get a ventilator, you’ll know who to blame. Thank goodness that Joe Biden is a mature and professional candidate because he will certainly vanquish this virus within his first week as president. Did we mention that Trump almost certainly has coronavirus himself? He is probably the one who gave it to your grandmother. Trump will not even get tested even though he definitely has the virus and isn’t he such a bad example to the American people?! Joe Biden would have gotten tested.

Hey—weren’t there some massive protests going on in Hong Kong along with a draconian and brutal response from the Chinese Communist Party government?

CORONAVIRUS

Fear and panic cause an insatiable thirst for more information (i.e. “news”). It’s human nature. Staying abreast of all the available information gives people a sense of security.

This simple feedback loop is the core of how the “news” media operates. They create a crisis and then people keep tuning in to keep track of the crisis. It’s insidious. More viewers = a more premium product to sell to the advertisers. I think they call that “journalistic integrity”, right?

The difference is that here at GLP, we THE USERS create the content with little or no unified coordination or agenda beyond mutual entertainment. GLP is just a fun circle-jerk. Trin just provides a space for us to jerk each other off. That’s why I don’t mind paying for GLP. It gives me what I want out of a forum. We are free to interact as we please or to abstain from interaction.
