Planted some Tobacco seeds last year..

I picked up seeds. Plan on germinating them today.

Put a dome over them or even a plastic bag until they germinate, it will keep the rates up.

I planted a carton of American Spirit, Should have a bumper crop.

yea they gonna die or not sprout if you dont keep them moist and warm.
sprouting them and getting them up to thumbnail size is the hardest part.takes about 3 weeks of babying them.
after that they pretty much good.

good job,if the dome doesnt have beads of water then its too dry inside.
it should look really wet inside but not drowning.

They take a long time to sprout, do not give up. Mine are still not up yet, they need a lot of light and not planted deep, just on the surface. Be sure to make a large place to dry them and cure. If you get an early rain season you might have a hard time, they need lots of room to dry, you must prevent mold.

Mine did well in the remote NW mountains with a harsh short growing season but I could have done much better with drying and preventing mold in storage. I will do better this time. I used frost cover to extend growing time but this time I will be prepared with rain cover too with a more spacious storage and drying area with extra heat and ventilation. No short cuts, a little mold will destroy your crop and make you sick if you use it.

The home grown was not as strong as commercial stuff. I used a pipe and mixed the resin with it when I wanted something a bit stronger.

you are good to go then.maybe some mild fertilizer water after they get about number 2 pencil diameter.
if the seeds are bad,get in touch with robo.ill hook you up with a few thousand shirazi.ive got whole small peanutbutter jar full.millions still in the seed pods.1 year old.

keeping the leaf from molding is almost harder than the growing,i use an open bedroom and lay them out on a bed in small layers.then every couple of days,rotate the layers.if they arent stacked,they dry too fast,if they stacked too thick,the mold.its fine ballancing act.

as for strength.shirazi is stronger than marlboro by about 10% plus is very weather hardy.its yields are way lower though compared to typical farm tobacco.

stay away from indian tobacco unless you are hardcore smoker.that stuff will drop you out.i grew it two years and its nicotene is off the scale.not for a lightweight.

Thanks for tips. What is the harm if they dry too fast? Do you take the leaves off the stem to dry them? I dried mine upside down hung on the stem last time and got mold by the stem. This time I plan to take the leaves off.

Tobacco is very sensitive in the first several weeks!
Take necessary steps to insure they are properly cared for.
And, if you want to continue to grow tobacco, make sure you allow some (or all) to go to seed.

if they dry too fast,they will be green and kinda harsh.if you dry too slow,they will smell like ammonia.
i dont de-stem until after theyve cured.
you want to get them deep rich brown or red-ish.most houses have real dry air from ac,they will dry too fast.thats why i stack about five to ten leaves together.then about every 2-5days,i rotate the small stack.

you also have to be careful of the plants laying down like a vine,that sticky nicotene is a dirt magnet.

then of course,i had a small tray from last year i set outside this year.the cat thought it would be cool to lay in it and litter box it.i could tell exactly which cat did it.the other cats shunned her.lol,she looked like she was gonna die!
lol,fucked her up!
took about a day to wear off.
