Covid-19 & The Sun: A Lesson From The 1918 Influenza Pandemic | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 78619133 United States 03/16/2020 02:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When the influenza pandemic reached the East coast of the United States in 1918, the city of Boston was particularly badly hit. So the State Guard set up an emergency hospital. They took in the worst cases among sailors on ships in Boston harbour. The hospital’s medical officer had noticed the most seriously ill sailors had been in badly-ventilated spaces. So he gave them as much fresh air as possible by putting them in tents. And in good weather they were taken out of their tents and put in the sun. At this time, it was common practice to put sick soldiers outdoors. Open-air therapy, as it was known, was widely used on casualties from the Western Front. And it became the treatment of choice for another common and often deadly respiratory infection of the time; tuberculosis. Patients were put outside in their beds to breathe fresh outdoor air. Or they were nursed in cross-ventilated wards with the windows open day and night. The open-air regimen remained popular until antibiotics replaced it in the 1950s. Doctors who had first-hand experience of open-air therapy at the hospital in Boston were convinced the regimen was effective. It was adopted elsewhere. If one report is correct, it reduced deaths among hospital patients from 40 per cent to about 13 per cent. According to the Surgeon General of the Massachusetts State Guard: `The efficacy of open air treatment has been absolutely proven, and one has only to try it to discover its value.’ Fresh Air is a Disinfectant Patients treated outdoors were less likely to be exposed to the infectious germs that are often present in conventional hospital wards. They were breathing clean air in what must have been a largely sterile environment. We know this because, in the 1960s, Ministry of Defence scientists proved that fresh air is a natural disinfectant. Something in it, which they called the Open Air Factor, is far more harmful to airborne bacteria — and the influenza virus — than indoor air. They couldn’t identify exactly what the Open Air Factor is. But they found it was effective both at night and during the daytime. Their research also revealed that the Open Air Factor’s disinfecting powers can be preserved in enclosures — if ventilation rates are kept high enough. Significantly, the rates they identified are the same ones that cross-ventilated hospital wards, with high ceilings and big windows, were designed for. But by the time the scientists made their discoveries, antibiotic therapy had replaced open-air treatment. Since then the germicidal effects of fresh air have not featured in infection control, or hospital design. Yet harmful bacteria have become increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Sunlight and Influenza Infection NEVER MISS THE NEWS THAT MATTERS MOST ZEROHEDGE DIRECTLY TO YOUR INBOX Receive a daily recap featuring a curated list of must-read stories. Your email... Putting infected patients out in the sun may have helped because it inactivates the influenza virus. It also kills bacteria that cause lung and other infections in hospitals. During the First World War, military surgeons routinely used sunlight to heal infected wounds. They knew it was a disinfectant. What they didn’t know is that one advantage of placing patients outside in the sun is they can synthesise vitamin D in their skin if sunlight is strong enough. This was not discovered until the 1920s. Low vitamin D levels are now linked to respiratory infections and may increase susceptibility to influenza. Also, our body’s biological rhythms appear to influence how we resist infections. New research suggests they can alter our inflammatory response to the flu virus. As with vitamin D, at the time of the 1918 pandemic, the important part played by sunlight in synchronizing these rhythms was not known. Face Masks Coronavirus and Flu |

Some hard-won experience from the greatest pandemic in recorded history could help us in the weeks and months ahead. Put simply, medics found that severely ill flu patients nursed outdoors recovered better than those treated indoors. A combination of fresh air and sunlight seems to have prevented deaths among patients; and infections among medical staff. There is scientific support for this. Research shows that outdoor air is a natural disinfectant. Fresh air can kill the flu virus and other harmful germs. Equally, sunlight is germicidal and there is now evidence it can kill the flu virus. [link to www.zerohedge.com (secure)] The article also mentions sunlight and vitamin D (which I have seen recommended as a supplement to take that may help fight off the virus). Also discusses the homemade face masks that they made back then which were the forerunners of the N95 respirators in use today. Very interesting, I was just watching a video on Instagram showing a makeshift hospital being set up on three stories of a high-rise parking structure in Iran. Plenty of fresh air and view to be had. |

Saying sunlight increases D3 is like food increases calories. There are so many incredible benefits to sunlight exposure, if it was the D3 that mattered, taking a supplement would confer you the same benefits. It doesn't. Sunlight boosts all hormonal, immune, and neurotransmitter activity. Sunlight directly on the testicles, for instance, has been shown to boost testosterone levels DRASTICALLY, time and time again. It speeds up your metabolism, tunes your circadian rhythm, improves sleep dramatically, which in turn increases your endogenous levels of growth hormone you endogenous release of melatonin and serotonin, increases your production of dopamine, lowers cortisol. Some of you who have taken tropical vacations and/or spent time in the outdoors, exposing your skin for prolonged periods of time will notice you aren't getting fatter, your sleeping better, you aren't feeling stress the same way, your sex drive is boosted etc, etc |

Vitamin D boosts the immune system, it controls the thyroid gland and much more, so a strong immune system means that virus infection will be treated much quicker and the symptoms will be much softer. I had Vitamin D deficiency and I had to take supplements for many months. I haven't measured my levels recently but I have started taking a 2000UI pill every second day. |

I have a daughter with speech delay and learning difficulties. I had my kids vitamin d looked at and they were very deficiant. I put them in the sun all summer. Got a paddling pool. Meeting with the school a few months back to school. They asked what i did over the summer. Because my daughter had a 75% spike in her learning. I told them. I got her in the sun every day and fresh air. They brushed it off. But i knew that was the factor. We are in winter. Been in side a lot. Her speech isn't the best. We are doing a veggie garden tomorrow so she will be out in the sun a lot from now on. |

No sunlight ever reaches the patients. Hospitals = death traps Imagine if they had a acute critical care department which is a little more bunkerlike. Then when you feel better they transfer you to the garden section of the hospital which is a happy place with pleasant sounds, a epic garden, high quality food and so on. Then if you go critical you get moved back to the high tech department. But that wont ever happen because current hospital system is a money leech. |

I bought an earthing grounding mat for them to sleep on and now they have moved and have a playground nearby and the kid is doing well. |

They told me they were better off than most because they were working outside all day in the sunshine. The article in the OP reminded me that they probably had a good point. Hope everyone stays well. I'm trying to get daily doses of sunshine, taking my elderberry every day, fish oil, and D3. Have ordered some quercetin as that has been mentioned in some studies. Also been eating more fruits and vegetables for a while now. Lots we can do naturally to try and firght off this virus although tomorrow is not a guarantee for any of us. |

User ID: 77590299 United States 03/16/2020 07:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The reason that most people don’t seem to get the results from taking vitamin D3 capsules compared to sunlight is they don’t take enough of it. For most of us it’s impossible to get enough sunlight to turn into vitamin D3 to be really healthy. These measly amount of 1000 IU or 2000IU just won’t do the trick. You have to take at least 10,000 IU/day on a regular basis. If you’re deficient you’ll need to take 20,000 or 30,000 IU/day for a month or two to catch up . Yes there is a dangerous level of vitamin D, it’s called a toxic level. To get enough vitamin D to reach a toxic level has been shown to require 60,000IU/day for weeks. To be absolutely safe it is recommended to also take vitamin D2. This prevents too much calcium from leaving your bones and getting into your bloodstream while you’re taking large levels of vitamin D3. As for the 1918 flu, the reason it was so deadly was our CDC had recommended this miracle drug called aspirin. They didn’t tell people how deadly it could be if you took too much. So the sicker people got the more aspirin they took. Studies have dug up bodies and looked at how much aspirin they had in their system and found large amounts of aspirin had killed a large proportion of the deaths. Maybe what happen was that the people that believed in natural healing back then were more likely to try things like being outside than taking large doses of aspirin. carterCZ |
