How could they calculate the orbit of a comet from back in 1844?

Easy. They recorded the coordinates of the comet from various observatories over time and these are published in articles that you can still find to this day.

Of course they didn't have digital cameras and computers, but they did have filar micrometers and telescopes that were capable of making accurate measurements. Maybe not quite as precise as the CCD measurements that we can make today even with amateur hardware, but it wasn't far off. They were able to compute the orbit even back then. The method of Gauss had been developed about 50 years before that point. I suspect there were probably other methods developed by the mid-19th century though I don't know the details on all the history of the various orbit determination methods.

The violent birth of modern man: The incredible ancient stone carvings that reveal how a devastating comet impact 13,000 years ago killed thousands, altered the climate and triggered the rise of the first civilisations

Scientists were analysing the mysterious symbols carved onto stone pillars at Gobekli Tepe in southern Turkey to find out if they could be linked to constellations.

Engineers from the University of Edinburgh studied animal carvings made on a pillar – known as the vulture stone – at the site.

By interpreting the animals as astronomical symbols, and using computer software to match their positions to patterns of stars, researchers dated the event to 10,950BC.

It probably resulted from the break-up of a giant comet in the inner solar system.

This is around the time the Younger Dryas period began according to ice core data from Greenland, which pinpoints the event to 10,890BC.

The find supports a theory that Earth is likely to experience periods when comet strikes are more likely, owing to Earth's orbit intersecting orbiting rings of comet fragments in space.

Ancient stone pillars offer clues of comet strike that changed human history

(Phys.org)—A team of researchers with the University of Edinburgh has found what they describe as evidence of a comet striking the Earth at approximately the same time as the onset of the Younger Dryas in carvings on an ancient stone pillar in southern Turkey. The group has published their findings in the journal Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry.

I wonder why they used the word Atlas, when C19 Y14
should do...

Astronomers are keeping a close eye on Comet ATLAS (C/2019 Y4). Currently beyond the orbit of Mars, the comet from deep space is falling toward the sun--and it has recently tripled in brightness, possibly signalling an explosion of dust and gas in the comet's core. In late May, it will swoop inside the orbit of Mercury and could become very bright, indeed.

At the end of the Ice Age some 13,000 years ago, the northern hemisphere seemed to be hotting up as glaciers were retreating and grasslands spreading. But then something happened: there was a sharp drop in temperatures and a return to glacial conditions for another thousand years.

This sudden cooling event is known as the Younger Dryas, and the causes behind aren’t fully understood. Now a new study is claiming to have found further evidence for the argument that the onset of this cold period occurred after Earth was bombarded with comets that set off vast wildfires.
