U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, asked Whitmer what “took so long” to change her nursing home policies, noting Michigan ranks fifth in the country for overall deaths related to COVID-19 in such facilities.

“I think what Michigan has experienced with COVID-19 is different than what other states have. We were working with the best counsel of our public health experts across country and at the University of Michigan,” Whitmer said, noting public health experts were involved in policy and decision making.

“We recognize that of course, in retrospect, probably a number of decisions we would have made some adjustment in, but when it comes to the data, one of the inherent challenges with COVID-19 is people don’t necessarily reflect on a death certificate it is COVID-19,” Whitmer said.


David McKinley, R-West Virginia, was quick to point out Whitmer’s criticisms of President Trump and the administration’s response to COVID-19.

“You have been openly critical in the media of the Trump’s administration to the pandemic. With all due respect, let’s take a hard look at some of the actions of the Trump administration and the CDC in chronological order,” McKinely said, followed by rattling off COVID-19’s timeline in the United States.

McKinely then launched into a series of questions about Whitmer’s decisions and responses to the pandemic in Michigan, specifically asking her to name businesses she said were re-routing orders of personal protective equipment to other states after Michigan placed orders. He also asked her about the nursing home orders.

“Other states have instituted mandatory testing of nursing home residents and staff. But apparently you have not,” McKinley said. “Could you answer those questions governor?”

“With all due respect, I’m not going to go toe to toe with you on every allegation that you’ve alleged,” Whitmer said in response.

“I will say this though. The United States lost valuable time in the early days of COVID-19 when we could have been planning, when there could have been a national strategy, when the use of the DPA could have been used — not for meat production — but for swabs, which we still don’t have enough of.”

Michigan's two U.S. attorneys praised Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Monday announcement to reopen the state, noting it followed “action by the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.”

The governor’s order moving Michigan out of a stay-home order and into loosened restrictions allowed under Stage 4 of her reopening plan “better respects the constitutional liberties of Michiganders,” according to a Tuesday statement by Michigan-based U.S attorneys Matthew Schneider and Andrew Birge as well as U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Eric Dreiband.
