The way out of this mess is to plow those idled agriculture lands and start planting or fencing them for animals now before it is too late.

We have the tech and the resources to grow/raise lots of food but the Sun and grow seasons will not wait on us, and if transportation and labor aren't made available it will be a long, cold, winter. Heard this from a grasshopper once.

Too late. All the conservatives/republicans/GOP have moved their companies overseas.

I just finished reading again the book "Grow or Die".

Root veggies is the way to get max calories per acre.

I am planting potatoes right now. I also have some high yielding types of squash going into the ground.

In the fall I will plant beets, turnips, potatoes, rutabagas, parsnips, and jerusalem artichokes.

Should get about 3 crops per year here in sunny Brazoria County, TX.

BTW, I am planting sunflowers and grains to feed my chickens through next winter. My grandma never bought feed. She fed her chickens root veggies and sunflowers.

Hell, she never owned a car! She could not have lugged bags of feed anyway, but what an incredibly industrious woman she was.
 Quoting: darth

Ok, as for potatoes, yes, they are great to have but how in the heck do you store them. Mine sprout within a week's time!

How are you storing your food?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77590476

Anything that does not store well in a root cellar will have to go in the deep freeze.

If it looks like the power will go out for a while, I will be drying veggies and meat for storage.

One answer is successive planting where you don't get all your food at one time. Plant every two weeks or so.

The farmers know when to plant their crops and how to care for their livestock. They havent stopped working and wont.
Farm families got you so dont worry about that !
 Quoting: farmersdaughter 26017109

All of you "alleged" farmers that say there is nothing to worry about are clearly trolls or lack common sense. Our agriculture planning and production was determined based on one set of expectations. Those expectations have changed in a huge way. Unless we previously grew and raised enough food for our own nation, we will likely be short. On top of the expected supply chain impact, we will have a resource problem.

No one fills up their gas tank and then fills up a 50 gallon drum to hall around just in case they need it. Are you telling me that the farmers and everyone else involved downstream have already planned on producing enough to feed an entire nation with no extra imports...is that really what you are saying? Do you know what all fellow farmers are doing acrosss the nation?
 Quoting: BeelzeBob

I'm a farmer. 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Not industrial, but family farming. Livestock, produce, lumber, syrup, hay, nuts, prepared foods, etc.

You're right about one thing, this nation's current industrial agriculture wasn't designed to feed everyone, it was set up to produce commodities, to be a piece in a global economic jigsaw puzzle that delivered nothing but polluted water, stripped soil, empty calories and a population of obese morons that don't even know where food comes from.

I can't predict what is going to happen, but if things continue on the way they have been even if it's for another month, there are going to be some serious food shortages in the urban areas. The rural Americans will be fine- most of them still have the skills and at the least the gardens to provide and they all have farmers like myself in almost every community that will see to it that no one in flyover country starves.

We aren't in the midst of a pandemic, this is a coup. We are at war and not one person in 1,000 recognizes what's actually taking place under cover of a flu outbreak.

And it is about to turn very ugly, very fast.

Don't worry. Crops are already going in the ground. Ranching and farming is in good shape. All producing more than we need, more than we can store, and enough to export.

Check out Ice Age Farmer. He follows all this carefully. Great guy.

The USA exports about half of what we grow. I think we will do OK for now, but I sure feel sorry for people depending on our imports.

Sounds good, successive planting but I am in OH so it is limited to 2.5 seasons. Although I have looked into hydroponic and aeroponic gardening.

With no dig, since you don't till the land, not only do you need less and less expensive equipment, you also get better soil over time and far fewer weeds. It's easier too, takes less time, and is a proven method with fabulous results.

Good post, sensible info. I do not know a great deal about chickens, I grow veggies. But I'm looking into chickens and I love sunflowers! I am going to ask my neighbor if I can plant them on their enormous property so we can share.

I think farmers need to be respected and valued as they have not been for DECADES.

The other day I went online and ordered frozen meat directly from a family farm I found that takes online orders. It probably cost $20-30 more than if I had purchased it at a grocery store but it felt GOOD to be valuing them and obtaining quality meat.
 Quoting: LaGata

Gata, I told this story before on GLP:

50 years ago a lady in my neighborhood used to bring her kids to the pool where I was a lifeguard. We chatted while the kids swam.

She and her mother were trapped behind Russian lines in East Germany during WWII. She was 8 years old.

She and her mom hid in the basement of their bombed out home.

They left only at night to search for root veggies in the fields that had been left after harvest.

They brought back leafy branches from the forest to feed the rabbits they were raising in that basement.

They lived on root veggies and rabbit meat. Eventually escaped to the American Sector and safety.

Rabbits are great for meat and fur and making top quality fertilizer.

I grew up on a farm in Montana, and believe me, you don't have to encourage any decent farmer to get farming. Every year is a fresh start and chance to put some money in the bank for a change. The thing that concerns me is the devastation to farming that has occurred to the middle of the country in the last two years. Immensely destructive flooding all along the Mississippi, followed by freezing temperatures along the northern states in early October which ruined many, many crops. Most farmers can only stand a year or two of that before the bank takes their land. I truly hope this is a good year for our Midwest farmers in particular. If not, food on everyone's plate is in jeopardy.

I'd Rather have every acre planted with food , than a ?Vaccine! That can't work because the virus mutates to fast.

Those billions can plant and buy big equipment

It takes two three million ( for the equipment) to do more than 1000 acres but if can be done with 3-5 people .

Its the row crops that take the massive labor

those acres that would be difficult to plant ,plant with hemp.
We got tonnes of seed, he'll we got tonnes of hemp

Ag on !

Tell you big acre stories
 Quoting: RPHUNTER

And we can eat the hemp seeds, press it for oil, shred it and feed that to critters, clean toxins out of soil with it and loosen up the dirt with it as well!

Green for you!
