The unemployed and small businesses are going to need that money much, much more than those of us still working. If I get anything, it's just going into savings. Besides, we're already seeing shelves cleaned out, supply chains collapse and empty store shelves. Seems like this will only serve to greatly exacerbate the problem. I'm sure it would be a Godsend to those who cannot afford to buy preps, but it's not being distributed like that.
Instead, the money could be used to help displaced employees, or preserve our small businesses and hospitality industry or even provide help for seniors and disabled who are at risk and should have support in order to stay out of the crowds in public.
This cash handout feels a little like a token "Make a Wish" granted to little dying Timmy: "Can't we do something to make their final days a little more comfortable"?
I know it's supposed to be for boosting the economy etc etc, but everything is being closed anyways. On second thought, I might just use that money (as if they'll actually deliver it to us) to help fortify home defense.
As a side note, how about a little something extra for those retail workers who're having to endure untold buckets of shit in dealing with the public at this time. It's difficult and it's not safe for them on many levels and I feel I owe them a debt of gratitude, but gratitude won't pay their bills and it won't help to keep them safe. If you work in a public-facing position in retail, please know that there are many of us out here who greatly appreciate what you are doing for us these days. |
