Re the economy, if all industrial nations are on a par does it matter? Money/perceived value is all relative and would equal out accordingly. If your house value fell by 50% you might feel 'poorer' but are you really?

Roof over your head and food in your mouth for 6 months , with no income to pay for anything just aint going to work . I know as i have been laid off. I work in defence IT as a contractor. No one is hiring . Not even NATO . In about 8 weeks i will be unable to pay rent or bills for myself and my family . And the GOVs 'package of support measures' does not cover me in the slightest .. The Universal Credit thing isn't as bad as they say. They are relaxing everything. I can see self employed being allowed to claim from Day 1 soon. The interview was just 2mins on the phone, all future interviews suspended, all demands to do anything suspended. The Housing Benefit element will cover some or all of the rent.
