There's no balance at all. Most of the cases are mild. Why isn't that headline news?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78627342

Probably because they have the ability to look at the future and it doesn’t look good. To focus on most symptoms being mild would just encourage people to behave in a reckless manner and not take it seriously.

Just had a text from my wife (NHS) an employee had locked herself away in a room and refused to come out, she became hysterical (the woman, not the wife) and they have sent her home.

Lots of jittery people about, not everyone's treating it as party-time.

I take your point, but the simple fact is, the flu kills many more people a year than this, and I don't recall seeing the world collapse because of it.
 Quoting: The Laughing Cavalier

I agree, but as I understand the initial worry about containment was that this is a novel (new) strain of the Coronavirus (which is a flu virus in itself) and the world could do without a new strain that appears to be so contagious and becomes an annual event.

If the info is to be believed the problems lie in the severity of ease of transmission, the fact that it can be transmitted prior to symptoms showing (first 5 days or so) and 'they' say that those first days are also the time that you may be most contagious.

The numbers of ICU units are not available to deal with the severity of this disease so as a country we want to limit the number of infections appearing at any time in order to not overwhelm the system.

Due to the nature of this virus it's worse than the SARS and MERS combined.

I believe we are dealing with what we are hearing, if there are other underlying reasons I have no idea but time will tell.

It doesn't require a planetary shutdown, does it? How do we know they're dead from Coronavirus, and not the flu or something?

The corona virus is the flu but far more contagious.

Here's a good explanation if you want to learn about it.

I don't know, could it be because so many are elderly and 'due to die' anyway?

Like I say my missus works for the NHS and if I hear anything I will let you know, she hasn't actually come across any positive cases as yet but the system is being geared up for a big hit in the not too distant future.

The initial panic buying is bound to subside as pantries fill and make people feel a bit more secure, I don't think we will go hungry but don't expect the variety we are used to for a while!

Forgot to add, another thing that makes this virus more dangerous is how long it can survive out of body. Allegedly up to 72 hours (3 bloody days!) on plastic and metal surfaces, wash wash wash your hands!

I think a lot of people had to stock up with the kids being off now. They never stop eating.

I wonder where all the food that would usually go to the school canteen will end up? All those industrial sized tins of banked beans etc.

Isn't it funny, that when everybody was told if you think you have it, to stay off work, half the fucking country phoned in ill?

Lying bastards. They're the ones raiding the supermarkets, when they're supposed to be staying in! What makes office staff so special that they can have this time at home?
 Quoting: The Laughing Cavalier

Lol aye the teachers were the first to start being ill. No surprise there!!!!

Well they’ve got a sickener because they’ve still got to go in to watch over the essential worker children 7am till 7pm and also during the holidays.

Must be at least 1 million who will have no access to benefits, no money and no job.

The UK government has said that they will start clamping down on the people if they don't stop gathering and start 'social distancing'.

What a load of bollocks. If people are being told to still go to work, except for poxy office staff, then how the fuck can we stop mingling?

You have no choice on the work floor about coming into contact with others, but for some reason, office staff are more at risk??

There's something really off about all this.

Apparently we have 250 ish people dead, so why are we shutting down the country.
It doesn't make sense.

It's gonna take a good year to get straight from this, and some businesses won't re open at all.

Sad times
 Quoting: Re-Named- 777

And they are building up massive bed-capacity by getting the private health providers to help out the NHS. Why the need for such capacity with so few deaths. Because, they will soon bring in mandatory vaccination and this is when the deaths will increase exponentially.

Evil has totally taken over this world. Get to know your God right now, whilst there is still a chance.

Too right! Why are they threatening to get tough with us if we don't keep 2 metres from each other, if we're expected to still go to factory jobs, etc., where keeping 2 metres apart is impossible? Don't forget, the person you could be working next to could be living with somebody showing symptoms. Plus, are registered asthmatics, as I am still expected to put ourselves at risk in a work environment?

Plus, why only Italy where 'bodies are piling up'? I just don't see it. If people aren't practicing 'social-distancing' around the world, which they aren't, let's be honest, then bodies would be 'piling up' everywhere, true?

I want the lockdown to come. Currently, the minions like myself have no choice but to persevere, or risk a zero income, while the wealthy owners and their relatives who are employees here get to sit at home with their feet up, making a sodding nuisance of themselves, by mithering with emailed queries & demands that demonstrate a compete ignorance re the business. It is certainly creating resentment. My temper is frayed.in fact I'm going out the back now for a smoke, and if they don't like it when they're spying on their cameras, they can lump it.

If they've got us all self-isolating and social-distancing, they can literally say anything they want and we will have no way to verify anything.

Five thousand people dropped dead on the streets today. It's true, because the government said so and we cannot verify because we're not allowed on the streets.

This is going to end very badly. The ease with which they have managed to pull this off, no shots fired, no protests. Wow! Just Wow!

You are all correct, except the last poster. Why are there reports of hospitals reporting nothing out of the ordinary, if the world and his wife have come down with it? Something is very wrong here...

It's because most cases don't require hospitalization, the NHS is coping with the few that do. The shit storm is in the wings if we don't contain this outbreak.

Re: Why hasn't the UK been locked down yet?
Look at the maths.

Say the UK population is 66,000,000

Current confirmed cases in UK today stand at 5,748

Not all these cases need treatment, most are told to self isolate and recover.

5,748 people is 0.01% of our population, if only 1% (i.e. 574 people) of that number require ICU beds and specialist care (usually for a minimum of 12 days) then that's a lot of extra ICU (remember accidents and illness is still occurring as well)

So to extrapolate, if the number of infected were to increase to say 1% of our population (at the same time, this is the important part, coping with the numbers) the figures become more than critical.

If 1% of population infected = 660,000

If only 1% of that number required critical care the beds required would be 6600

The system wouldn't cope, this is why they NEED to level the curve in the spike.

There is also a disparity in where the ICU beds are located throughout the country.

People are already going nuts where I am... using violence on people to get bags of groceries off them as soon as they bring them out of their cars...

Gosh! I knew there'd only be a matter of time before these things started happening... plus, most grocery stores are completely out of stock on most essential items because of the panic buyers... some in my town are closed until further notice...

I couldn't even find a gas station near me open or within a couple of miles from me...

I'm guessing they will declare lockdown on the country soon... it already looks like it is in lockdown in some areas up and down the UK...

Yobos are out of school too with nothing else to do but harass people and cause trouble...
