Inmate dies after contracting coronavirus at Louisiana federal prison
Rich Schapiro

NBC NewsMarch 29, 2020, 10:08 AM CDT
A 47-year-old inmate died Saturday after contracting the coronavirus at a Louisiana federal prison where at least five prisoners have tested positive for the virus, officials said.

The death of Patrick Jones marks the first COVID-19 related death of an inmate in the federal prison system, a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson said.

Jones was locked up on drug charges at a minimum-security prison in Oakdale facing a surge in Covid-19 cases, according to the Bureau of Prisons and union leaders.

Coronavirus: Louisiana health system could be overwhelmed by early April, warns governor

“We remain on a trajectory, really, to overwhelm our capacity to deliver health care,” he said.

“By the end of the first week in April, we think the first real issue is going to be ventilators. And we think it’s about the fourth or fifth of April before, down in the New Orleans area, we’re unable to put people on ventilators who need them. And then several days later, we will be out of beds.”

“What we’re going to do is raise money, buy food at local restaurants to keep them going, then we’re going to give our hospital workers, the nurses, technicians, security, cleaning people, all the people who are risking their lives every single day, we’re gonna send them some food love."

Starting less than two weeks ago with just a 60 dollar order of food, word quickly got around along with thousands of dollars in donations.

Doctors still wear N95 respirators to even walk down the hallways of our unit, but UMC tells us nurses are not worth the money to protect. Many of these MDs stand outside of closed hospital room doors and speak to their patients over the phone, asking the nurse to make all physical assessments. Two of our nurses are already out sick with Covid-19 symptoms. For the rest of us it is only a matter of time.

Still not enough testing in the Baton Rouge area:

BRG coronavirus testing site reducing operating hours

The coronavirus testing site at Baton Rouge General Mid-City will only operate three days a week, for an hour and a half each day.

According to Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, the community testing site will be open from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The schedule will allow for greater conservation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which will help protect medical staff at the testing site.

Good Morning guyshf

Just heard from a coworker that other states other than FL are considering closing ranks to keep Louisiana residents out. I have not had time to try to look or verify. Although I understand...totally understand....it makes me very ill. Like panic attack kinda ill. My oldest son and his fiancé...as well as my Dad who lives alone and in not-so-great health is in MS. The thought of being physically cut off from them if they needed me is a thought I’ve suppressed until now.

One of our workers is going to be tested today. He has no symptoms but his wife got tested and is waiting on results. She has fever and diarrhea....I know fever is a symptom but the other?? Luckily we locked our office down so my contact is limited to only 4-5 people in office now.

I thought of including MS in this thread bc I’m not sure if there is one for them. I am trying to keep up with them as closely as us when I can. Thoughts?

I may not be able to update much today bc things are very busy here but I will try to check in. I really wanted to thank all of you for helping keep this thread moving and updated. Y’all have a great day and be safe!

Presley Page, I also have parents/family in Mississippi. I would definitely appreciate including Mississippi in this thread. Right now, I am staying away from them because it's not that bad in their area, and I don't want to be responsible for bringing it to them.

Yes sounds like we are in the same boat. My son just texted me and he is offshore. He’s worried he will not be able to get home if they continue locking borders. His fiancé is a nurse but it is not bad in their area yet. I will edit our header and include MS. If y’all would like to share our page on any threads to make it more available for people who don’t know about it please do. I’ll check back in after lunch.

I get that clinical trials need to be done, but could we go ahead and use this drug for those in bad shape? Because I don't feel like a clinical trial is fast enough for those on ventilators. Btw, once put on a ventilator, chances of surviving are something like 20%. So if you require a ventilator, there's an 80% fatality rate.

I know we've all been told ventilators are what we need for more to survive. I don't believe that. We need drugs like hydroxychloroquine available across the state, so people can get it as easily as Tamiflu for the flu. If ppl were told that it could be treated with this drug if they have symptoms and are flu negative (no covid-19 test needed), then we'd keep more ppl from getting serious enough for the hospital. The 400,000 pills will get us much closer to this way of handling covid-19.
