In Louisiana, death comes before coronavirus test results

[link to news.yahoo.com (secure)]

Social worker Natasha Ott was feeling ill but declined a COVID-19 test earlier this month because her clinic, Crescent Care — which serves the HIV-positive community — only had five, and she wanted to save them for patients.

"They don't think I need to get tested unless I develop a fever," the 39-year-old texted her boyfriend, Josh Anderson. "All looks well."

Ott, a Claremont native who moved to New Orleans five years ago, was finally tested a week later, on March 16. She was told she would have to wait for the results. Anderson offered to bring her pho, but she said she didn't have an appetite. She was tired, and asked him to walk her dog, Zola.

Two days later, she texted: "I just don't understand why I don't feel much better yet." Two days after that, Anderson found her collapsed in her kitchen, dead.

“She died on the day she was supposed to get the results,” said family friend Carol Coalson, of San Diego, Ott's foster mother, who had just visited her last month to celebrate Mardi Gras.

Edwards seeks federal disaster declaration for Louisiana

[link to m.chron.com (secure)]

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana's governor on Tuesday asked the White House to declare a major disaster in his state to free up more direct federal aid to cope with the surging coronavirus outbreak, warning that the New Orleans area could run out of hospital beds by early April.

Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office issues burn ban because of coronavirus

[link to www.theadvertiser.com (secure)]

The ban comes as the officials anticipate an increase in open burning because families are looking "for ways to pass the time at home" while sheltering at home, said State Fire Marshal H. “Butch” Browning.

“This order will assist in preventing potential fire-related dangers that could result in unnecessary fire service response as well as diminish airborne irritants caused by burning," he said in a statement.

I discovered today that very little testing is being done in the Baton Rouge, Ascension Parish area. Even people who have been exposed to someone who tested positive and now themselves are experiencing symptoms can't get tested. I think the key is that you have to be struggling to breathe, and that is the only way you get tested.

Meanwhile people continue to go to work even if someone in their family is experiencing symptoms. They can't get tested so no benefits available to them as far as sick leave or anything else. New Orleans may be in really bad shape at this point, but I would venture to say that the Baton Rouge area is a ticking time bomb.

So where are all the drive thru sites? I think there’s one in Mandeville and they have them in NOLA but surely there are more. Are they turning people away there too?

A coworker of mine who has the privilege of working from home said her husband works in NOLA and got sick. He got tested and is home waiting on results.

Even though the governor has issued a hold on all judgments being filed, y'all need to know that the debt collectors are still at work. My place of employment is still working, e-filing lawsuits and preparing a pile of garnishments to be filed as soon as the hold is lifted.

If you have debt, now is not the time to ignore it. Contact your creditors and do whatever you can to avoid going into default and becoming another piece of paper on my desk.

I am sure that many grocery stores and the like have people that have COVID-19. I know of a Walmart in the metro New Orleans area that had an employee that tested positive for the virus too (Uncle Intel).

What I am telling my family is that there are many, many people you have run across and will run across on a daily basis that have it and don't know. So just keep your immune system boosted with Vitamin C and D, wash your hands and try to keep your distance.

Nothing has really changed for me...essential business and my kid's daycare is allowed to stay open.

Not sure if this is good or not, as far as spreading the virus goes.
 Quoting: Head2Bunker

I think they need to re-evaluate what is essential and really get strict. We are all going to have to get uncomfortable and inconvenienced to get through this. It really sucks too bc my husband isn’t working now....he’s in oilfield....I’m essential so I will be employed but I can’t support us. So I get the financial concern but I don’t want to bury him or one of my children either.
 Quoting: Presley Page

I am not essential, the husband is, not enough to support us. Someone on Facebook took a photo of a local snowball stand with a line and people hanging out eating snowballs. I am sorry, but while I feel sorry for this small business, a snowball stand is hardly essential. I feel companies are demanding employees work regardless and NO ONE is monitoring the situation. In other areas, you get fined. I just went to Albertson's on George O Neal in BR. It's a regular day, getting anyone to honor social distancing is ridiculous. I think I am going to start dressing up in wacky outfits just to keep people away from me.

In BR, we have to make a teledoc appointment with a regular doctor, then get his referral to be tested. It's impossible btw to do teledoc through OLOL, which leaves us in the position to get very sick before we get help. I'd likely be better off driving to NOLA.

My husband does collections as well, bragging that you are going to file a judgement on someone during this crisis, or soon thereafter is wrong, and by the way is in direct violation of the FDCPA. You can not as a collector ever threaten to file a judgement if you have no intention to or have no legal right to do so. In this instance, I am sure you are behaving, in the same manner, you likely do at work, and I am here to tell you, that as a collections professional- it won't get you very far- that's why you have to resort to garnishments and e-filed lawsuits. Your attitude comes through in your post.

In this unprecedented time, you should sit back and gain some consideration for others who may not have it as good as you do. You are an essential worker. Take a breath and realize that sometimes people just get behind due to situations they have no control over. Be kind and respectful of that fact. It will take you far in your career. Suing every single person just adds to the bad debt for your organization, and garnishments are usually the types of things done by the govt or fly by night creditors. So if you are doing this, I highly doubt you work at a reputable place.

Yes, the situation in BR is poorly managed, and to be honest this is why we have cases doubling every day. People do not know they have it, and obviously every business is "essential".
