Astro, and light curves for Atlas you're watching.

This one I saw on twitter would make Atlas it the brightest comet of our lifetimes easily-

I don't know how good the modeling is on that light curve. Here's the one I've been going by.

There's really no doubt that it will be a good comet. The question is just how visible it will be after perihelion.

It's surrounded by gas and dust that has been coming off the comet as it heats up. It's in a very elliptical orbit that carries it into the inner solar system from the Oort cloud, and in fact it's traveling in an orbit very similar to a great comet from over 100 years ago (C/1844 Y1) so it may be a related object. That means it has plenty of volatile ices that will sublimate away into gas and carry away dust from the surface of the comet as it approaches the sun.

It's really striking how similar the orbit of ATLAS is to this great comet from the 19th century.
[link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov (secure)]
I don't think there's any doubt that these objects are related. Possibly fragments of an even larger comet that came apart some time ago. Even back in the 19th century astronomers were investigating whether that comet was related to any others. Now we finally have one of its siblings in view.

Ahh the fiery comet.

Brace yourselves for the fiery time, its will be dry and very hot and fiery.

Los Angeles the crystal swamp will fry and people all over the world will become mentally and physically battered.

For cosmological disasters coming one right after another from all directions, beating them down.

Oh many signs for all to see, the truth of this true prophecy, but watch out for its coming tail.

Neat little time lapse you have there.

Filmed by the GLP 'scope, remotely controlled by a user, no doubt!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78659015

This was with my scope. No, I didn't steal anyone else's scope. I did stream the images live, for free, for GLP.

Anyone even suggesting anything that sounds like fraud is getting a ban. You know, I don't have to stream this for you guys. I'm not even sure why I do since most of the time I get accused of bullshit for it. This is my equipment, I paid for it myself.
 Quoting: Astroshill

Just ignore them Astro. Just BAN them without even replying back to them, they aren't worth it. GREAT FOOTAGE!!!.

I never watched the stream, but thank you for providing it.

I processed all of the individual raw images from the last two webcasts using a new program I wrote for automatically tone mapping raw fits files using Reinhard's algorithm.

I'll be releasing the source code for the processing software later this week.

Re: Comet Atlas Time Lapse
Hi Astro,

I have some questions about another Asteroid that is coming towards Earth. It seems that Atlas will not get too close to Earth but what about Asteroid 1998 OR2? This Asteroid is estimated to be between 1.1 and 2.5 miles wide and it’s closest approach will supposedly be on April 29th, 2020?

ATLAS C/2019 Y4 -

The distance of Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) from Earth is currently 160,413,685 kilometers, equivalent to 1.072299 Astronomical Units

The closest approach of Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) to Earth happens on Sat May 23 2020 at a distance of 0.78113215 Astronomical Units, or 116,855,706 kilometers, which is 72,610,769 miles from Earth.

Asteroid 52768 (1998 OR2) -

The distance of Asteroid 1998 OR2 from Earth is currently 25,734,025 kilometers, equivalent to 0.172021 Astronomical Units.

On Wed Apr 29 2020 at a distance of 0.0420477448451681 Astronomical Units, or 3,718,232 miles from Earth, with an impact Risk of 8.70. I'm not sure if that impact risk is bad?

Two Asteroids that are being closely monitored by NASA - Asteroids - 1998 OR2, as well as another near-Earth asteroid, labeled 1998 OH. Because of their trajectories, the asteroids have been deemed “potentially hazardous” by NASA.

It makes sense why the Government put this elaborate “Corona Virus Plan” together because of what is coming towards Earth?? Is there reason for concern?
