User ID: 78262312 United States 03/25/2020 01:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | After 24 years in the gulf of mexico I just got laid off so it looks like I'll end up losing My house. No point in looking for work because I live in an oil town and jobs not connected to the oil industry only pay like 8 dollars an hour. Quoting: jkm1864 So, you bought too much house and are too good to work for $8/hr? GTFO fagggot. I have a fucking problem with your statement. First, you don’t know his situation. You assume he bought too much house. You didn’t consider that he could have just had cancer or been in a contentious divorce or any other things that can cause someone to get into financial distress. Maybe hie has a sick child. You don’t know. The other thing is that there are a lot of people who bust their asses in school and/or working and expect a salary or wage commensurate with their experience or education. I’ll work for $8/hr if I need to in order to survive, but my first job out of grad school 20 years ago was as an IT security contractor and I earned $75/hr in a small town in Kansas with an incredibly low cost of living. My rate is obviously much higher 20 years later - I personally won’t touch anything under $200/hr now. I know how this guy feels. He can earn $8/hr but he feels like his life is over because there’s absolutely no lifestyle that $8/hr can support other than being homeless. Ignore the trolls. They are even more worthless than before this mess. Not worth the energy of a response. Within the surreal depths of "reality" lies the truth. |

I don’t know if they hire for hydrographic survey but they use them. And I don’t know if they are hiring right now or hiring contractors especially with this virus thing. Suzanne is the HR lady for our department and she is really nice. I am not sure she handles Salvage HR though But they got a massive contract to salvage a car carrier that had ran aground in Georgia. Also, they had a pretty big job out in Aransas refloating barges that were pushed on shore during a past hurricane for Kirby that I was a big part of. I work in a different department than Salvage but work with them often. I don’t think the virus is stopping or slowing business for them. If anything they are making more money. I don’t think the virus is going to stop us The oil field is dead and I don’t think it’s ever coming back this time unfortunately. There is too much oil on land that is more accessible. It is very costly and difficult to drill in the ocean More than likely they don't hire directly but they hire a survey company like John Chance to provide survey services for them. I'm not a rigger I work with stuff like sonar, USBL, and gps to provide navigation or asbuilt services for oilfield work. Pussy Grabber Extraordinaire |

It is very costly and difficult to drill in the ocean It's been dying for a long time and I knew it was and shame on Me for not preparing. I just had a job making damn good money like 22k a month so I was living the dream I guess. I wasn't the big spender that was the EX but I always saved as muchee as I could so I was always prepared for long periods of no work. It'skin just this year everything in My life exploded in My face and I've been bar keeping it together since September and now this lay off really sucks because I was hoping to start work soon so I could do like a 7 month hitch to solve all my problems. Well you work offshpore. And you are used to hitches. So if I was in a survival situation I’d try to get any job offshore even like deckhand or something (they are usually hiring deckhands at my company and all you need is a TWIC card not even a Coast Guard MMC) I would start work doing anything that can get you offshore and on the hitch schedule. Yeah $125 for a deckhand isn’t very good but you get free food while you are there, you are not spending money on gas or activities at all, and you have roof over your head. All these companies seem to always want people to work over. You just keep telling them you want to work over and keep working over. I’ve known people who have just lived at work a year + While I’m working over or on a break I would sell all assets and start over. Do this for like a year as things get better in the world and build up your money. That’s what I would do but I’m a survivalist I would do anything (ethical) to survive. Sometimes you have to downsize or at least restructure your life in big ways. Don’t give up Also check out workboat magazine they have all the names of companies that operate lots of different types of vessels and great info about jobs even job listings |

I was never laid off but it did get lean sometimes. The reason I never got laid off is because We work 24/7 on call and people get burnt out so there is a constant shortage of people. Now is different and I think the gulf has finally had it because with 20 dollar a barrel oil its not profitable and to be honest it hasn't been profitable in a long time and the majority of work was actually taking out oil wells. No its a 1850 square foot house and the mortgage is 1400 a month due to the EX blowing everything I made over the years and having to take out a home equity line to pay off Her credit card debt. I wouldn't have a problem working for 8 dollars an hour but since My bills are over 2k a month that isn't possible. I never did that to my husband OR my marriage - 33 years now HAPPILY married - (I married young, he is older). My grandparents who survived the depression scared the be-jeebers out of me - so I am "thrifty" 2 a fault. All women need to learn thrift! We taught our daughter- and she is 26 - no college debt - self sufficient. Stop buying $hit people!! Recycle - (thrift stores, yard sales, freecycle) we bought a home with all we saved - and we both work AT Home in tech/software development - software testing (we worked our way through college and are self taught/certified in technical field(s). We have had other home businesses (sold firewood). PS I cut my own hair, and my husband's hair - nobody can tell we live frugally - we live in a wealthy area (window shop) - have ALL WE NEED and More. My aging parents are miserable - in debt, new cars, "remodeling" rackets, "spiritual" scams - the whole smash - right now losing what's left in the stock market crash (pyramid schemes) - I WARNED THEM years ago - but they refused to listen. Being from Texas and hearing this story time after time from employees of the oil industry. They now how volatile that business is, it's either boom or bust. When it's booming these people continue spend every last dollar they make and never save, it's a broken record down here. It's like my wife's sister and her husband, me and my wife both make well more a year than them two combined. However if you looked at it from from the surface you'd think they make 5 times more than us. She's a teacher making 40K and he's a fireman making 60K, they have a 400k house on the golf course, a boat, she drives a 70k Tahoe, he drives a new jeep. They are flat broke, can't afford to pay for nothing at family outings, my poor in-laws I'm sure are propping them up just so they can keep up the Jones and live that phony lifestyle on Social Media, it's maddening but hey that's the new America. |

Good luck to you. Gave my heart and soul to the company I used to work for. They left me high and dry. They called during a monster snow storm and demanded that I come to the office after having earlier that day advised me to work from home due to a blizzard in the forecast. Had to drive 130 miles round trip (glad I drove a company vehicle) through mountain passes in heavy snow. When I got there they let me go along with all the other employees. They were closing our location. Decided never again. Sold my house, sold my two new cars, paid all my bills, simplified and downsized as much as possible. Bought another house, a rundown fixer upper, paid cash. Paid cash for a used pickup for me and a used suv for wife. Prepped to survive for a year unemployed. Now, if my current employer lets me go I could care less because I live a very conservative lifestyle below my means. |

It doesn't matter what the price is really because Obama destroyed the gulf and after He shut it down all the investors started pouring all their money into the land wells. His administration also would refuse to issue permits in an effort to destroy the industry and He almost did but Trump won. The problem is the damage done was bad and now with this drop in oil its gone for sure. You have to realize costs are so much more expensive than on land because You have to contract bots, rigs, and barges to do the work and those people that work on those vessels make more than their counterparts on land because they don't get to leave after work.
