Its 1/4th of what is needed! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77994583 People will have to cut cell phone bills, cable tv, internet, and car insurance and car payments in order to break even! This money is going to virtually everyone....even those WITH and without jobs. Additionally, anyone who has lost their job is entitled to state unemployment benefits BUT the Federal Government is going to supplement those benefits with an additional $600 a month. So, if you lose your job you get unemployment PLUS and extra $600 monthly and on top of that you get this extra $1200 booster. What more do you want? On the nearest envelope, i multiplied 1200 x 300,000,000 and I got 360 Billion...to the people. They're going to spend 2 trillion and the Munchkin guy gets 500,000,000,000 (500 billion) to give to whoever he wants and he doesn't have to tell who he gave it to. So the people get 360 billion and big business get the other 2.14 trillion. Keep your bullets dry. That's not how the money is allocated. The most important thing is to get some money in the hands of the people, get some money in the hands of the businesses (so they are still around for people to continue working, either remotely or in-person when this clears up). It wouldn't do anyone any good if every person got $7000, but then 75% of all businesses went out of business and took all those jobs along with them. You would then have people blow through the $7000 in 2-3 months, and then be broke, only broke with no job to return to. Well, for me, half of it would be my rent, a quarter or more would be my food, and the rest would cover my other bills, even to the point of saving up a hundred or two. But I live very very frugally for my own reasons. In a different position, I'd be at least $1500-2000/mo standard. For most people, $1200 ranges from helping a little, to covering most costs, but rarely everything. |

But starting on the latter months its going to get much more reasonably worse, and July+ it will be almost no one's fault. Rainy day, not rainy year. Some can dig into retirement savings, I GUESS. Some. Even some of my wealthiest friends who realistically save up, won't do too well after a few months, and will struggle after several. Then they or their partner/spouse loses their job... |

Fill your gas tank. Quoting: LilOle Buy some oatmeal, Maypo and vitamins. Shut off your cable and internet. The bottom line is you have to prioritize. That's funny, I thought of "Maypo" the other day :-) I agree though, some basic foods and vitamins and axe the frills. Put some in an envelope in the back of the closet and sit tight and wait for this to blow over. You're not gonna get evicted tomorrow or next week or the week after that. People will work with you, it's to their advantage to do so. |

They've beefed up unemployment to equal what you were getting. If you don't qualify then you could get disaster unemployment assistance. If you are a business owner they are backing that up too. If you have trouble with bills or loans, contact them. Many will work with you to help get you through. All that plus a $1200 check is actually pretty good. |

This COVID kick in the ass should teach those spending every penny a tough lesson and I think demand will be forever changed. Going forward I think people may finally think the first thing they are going to buy is some security, some savings if this happens again. I don’t think they will be spending the first thousand bucks on the other side of this on a freakin iPhone upgrade. I’m probably giving people too much credit but I really think things are going to be permanently different. Doesn’t look good for the stock market whos value depends on things going back to the spend spend spend way it used to be |
