i don't care but if anyone gets closer then that when i am out and about i would fucking flip on them because i enjoy drama!

thats about the distance they can triangulate a mobile phone signal to.

I found out the answer

The "6 feet of distance" rule comes from studies of respiratory physiology, said Dr. William Schaffner, infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University.

"Without a cough or a sneeze, if we exhale, the distance 3 to 6 feet from each other is called the breathing zone. And it's in that kind of volume of air that what I exhale begins to mix with the air that's already in the room," Schaffner said. "So if you're standing within 3 to 6 feet of me, you may well inhale some of what I exhale. And of course if I have the virus, what I'm exhaling microscopically contains the virus."

I've seen multiple news reports on BBC and Sky etc., that precisely explain why. Projectile from a cough typically doesn't go much further than 2m, occasionally it can breach that, but for the vast majority of time its contained somewhere in that region. A news reporter on the Beeb demonstrated it with some neon dye, and the projectile that comes out from a cough is quite surprising. 2m / 6ft is pretty sensible and good round number.
