DOOM books to read during lockdown for those who've had enough of Netflix
If you feel like reading during the apocalypse as you live through it, here are some pointers.

Feel free to add your own suggestions.

Ben H. Winters 'The Last Policeman'
A New Hampshire detective investigates a murder, while the world prepares for a planet-ending meteor strike. Noir-esque and a fascinating glimpse of humanity when it knows it's going to die.

Cormac McCarthy 'The Road'
Terrifying portrayal of a post-apocalyptic world, sombre and moody.

M. R. Carey 'The Girl with All the Gifts'
A fungal parasite (which actually exists) has jumped to infect humans, creating a planet of zombies who only react if you make too much noise. A group of children have somehow survived as zombies while remaining human, and this tells the story of one such girl.

Claire Vaye Watkins 'Gold Fame Citrus'
Somewhat left field, this one details a drought-ravaged California with a moving sea of sand preventing survivors getting east.

Karen Maitland 'A Company of Liars'
Historical novel about a band of travellers set in England at the time of the Bubonic Plague. As they try to evade the path of the pandemic, cut off at every turn, the strangers' secret sins are gradually revealed.

Brandon Sanderson 'Steelheart'
Far more light and uplifting, this trilogy about superheroes shows what would happen if the super humans were more despotic than kind.

Iain Banks 'A Song of Stone'
My fellow Scot's forlorn tale of a nobleman's attempt to prevail inside his castle after an (unnamed) apocalypse befalls civilisation, and a band of surviving military impose themselves on his people. Wordy.

Max Brooks ' World War Z'
Ian Punnet did a great show on C2C featuring this novel by Mel Brooks' son. Told after the fact,a journalist compiles accounts of the survivors of the zombie apocalypse. Highly realistic and very contemporary, the plague starts in China. Some great moments, like the Americans bugging out to the woods in RVs, thinking of it as a holiday, until the inevitable horror takes its course, and North Korea enforcing denture removal for all citizens to stop them biting.
"Don't hate the black, don't hate the white, if you get bitten, just hate the bite" Sly Stone

'We’re the middle children of history. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war. Our Great Depression is our lives.'

Pretty sure all the long time GLP'ers would have that book.
There were numerous threads on it.
Was a good read for sure, the reality would scare the younguns though.

Give yourself a Classical Education.

Read Homer, Hesiod, Herodotus and Thucydides (to start with).

Buy these and also purchase Classical Mythology by Morford and Lenardon. All of these are available at a discount book store.

The Sacred Cows Trilogy, by Bonnie Fraher

A pandemic sweeps the globe, followed by a mandatory vaccine. That's when the sh*t really hits the fan.

This one is a real page turner!

The perfect apocalypse book, actually includes 3 of them- A Canticle For Leibowitz

A Canticle for Leibowitz is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel by American writer Walter M. Miller Jr., first published in 1959. Set in a Catholic monastery in the desert of the southwestern United States after a devastating nuclear war, the book spans thousands of years as civilization rebuilds itself.

It's not the Apocalypse, but "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton is a must read for anyone on this site. It is fiction book he ever footnoted. It is about governments creating events like earthquakes and tornadoes to control the world. It was written 20 years ago. I stopped believing in AGW (global warming) after reading this book.
