Merrill formed the Arrows in London in 1974 with guitarist Jake Hooker and drummer Paul Varley. He wrote I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll with Hooker and the band enjoyed success also with singles Touch Too Much and My Last Night With You. Merrill, who recorded the original version of I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll with his band the Arrows in 1975, was also remembered by rocker Joan Jett who had a huge hit with the song.
