I don't know why they are doing these particular flights but much of Google imagery used to come from the FSA. That's how they film they images you see on Google Maps and Earth.

I'm not sure how much is satellite imagery now but back before satellites could film a porno of 2 gnats fucking, they imagery all came from aerial photography.
