Re: Rent Strike Movement Gaining Steam
Personally I find the idea that someone could own a building and collect profit in the form rent from other people repulsive.

Landlords like everyone else is responsible for themselves and it is high time they understand the risk associated when profit is predicated on the tennant's ability to sell themselves in the marketplace to pay the rent.

Is there anyone more despicable than someone who pimps real estate?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78569585

So many times the landlord is not collecting profit. They are covering their mortgage and repairs. This is like saying go live in a box unless you can afford a house.
 Quoting: Southern OR

EXCELLENT POINT

Laundry machine boxes are fantastic, but harder to find "just lying around"

Basically, any strong corrugated cardboard would work

Also, they are modular, and scalar. Want to make an entire "house" out of boxes? If you keep them protected from moisture, you've got a pretty decent live-place for a while

Not being sarcastic!

 Quoting: Wharf Rat

I truly am not being sarcastic. Seems people think all folks that own rentals are lords of the manor. Many are just the folks that kept their first house when they bought another one, or could no longer afford the one they live in. Not all landlords are rich.
 Quoting: Southern OR

You'd be amazed at how many people rent their homes because they bought a house in 2008 and are still upside down on their mortgage. Many rental owners rent their home out because they could not sell, had to move and could not pay two mortgages.

Re: Rent Strike Movement Gaining Steam
Quite a few European countries have suspended rents, MORTGAGES, and utilities until the crisis is over; likely for at least the rest of the year. Here in the USA we have to gets tens or hundreds of thousands of signature from citizens to even propose the idea to our leaders, and even then only a few states have only suspended rents.

This 6.2 $Tn "care bill" is shored up by mortgage backed securities; the same type of bubble that caused the 2008 financial crisis. This time it's not sub-prime accounts that are the ticking time bomb, it's suspended rent payments in a gig economy heavily reliant on rental properties; fucking air b'n'b-tards.

Think about it. Cool, renters don't have to pay shit. Well, the person who has a loan out on that condo or house won't be able to pay their mortgage on that rental unit if their renter doesn't pay their rent. Some property owners rely on renters for their sustenance, so this move basically means after 90 days of this there are gonna be a fuck ton of defaults/foreclosures and this will all come crashing down worse than a fucking asteroid impact.

If Trump exec orders a suspension on rents AND mortgages nationwide then I feel that would prop up this wobbly volatile economy a bit longer, and give most americans a safety net and lower stress levels. Otherwise here in America we're fucked. Europe might have a chance.

It’s not difficult to see a lot of folks are going to suffer from all this shit financially. My wife and I are fortunate in being debt free. We still own our old house and have a tenant. Young lady with two small kids. Told her to forget paying rent for April. Will probably forego the rent for at least a couple of months. Taxes that are due in June and September have already been covered and there were no other expenses the past year up till now.
Depending on just how far and long this goes on, we may either cut the rent in half or just let it slide for a time. This young lady is very responsible and takes very good care of the property. She Is a nurse and is on the front line every day.
We can’t help everybody, but feel we need to do what we can. One less thing for her to worry about while taking care of sick folks.

Before COVID19

4764.67 Gross take home salary after taxes per month
-1634.87 Rent
- 89.21 Electricity
- 100.37 Phone
- 900.00 Truck Payment
- 168.76 Insurance Vehicle
- 67.86 Internet
- 60.65 Life insurance
--------------------------

1,742.95‬ left for food other bills travel, another 400 a month out of that for fuel etc.

So with financial assistance my job not being essential means in one month I cannot pay rent or end up homeless, the truck comes first that's my livelihood I am a carpenter so yeah I wont be paying rent tomorrow, fuck that noise. I am not allowed to work, they can go ask the government, my government cash will maintain my food and my truck that's all I need to get back on my feet after all this shit. No evictions for 3 months so 3 moths free rent, I aint starving to pay some fortune 500 rent....

I am in and will not be resuming rent until the feds let me earn a proper income anyone that tries to put me out will eat lead. FYI the assistance the feds offer her is going to be about 980 biweekly. and most 1 bedroom apt goes for 1400-1800 a month in Toronto.

as an onsite manager I know what owners of properties go through. The owner has multiple complexes and HE still will owe on the mortgages even if tenants don't pay. One of his buildings mortage alone for one month is $18k!!!

And these are not high status complexes, just average every day apartments and condos in Alaska

It's a catch 22

Other countries are waiving mortgage and reduced utilities but we cant? This seems to be leading back to bankers time for them to bail the people out.bankers were the problems from the start just ask jesus how he felt about the money changers.im not one for freeloading or socialist ways we should be earning our fair share but if the government wants to shut down the economy for a virus that is no where near as dangerous or deadly as other viruses previously experienced they should step in and tell the banks to waive the mortgage payments until this is over.the banks have gotten our bail out money before let's get that back until people can get to work.the bankers and elite are the problem.

"payments be waived, not delayed,..."

So, they think it's 'helpful' to delay your rent for three
months? But you have to pay them back when it's done?

So, now your behind 3 months rent, and no job. And they're
doing this in the hopes you will have 3 months rent at
some point when you get back on your feet? If you get
your job back?

That would mean letting go of other 'priorities' to

get that large sum of money back.

Which do they suggest people stop paying to pay them back?

Car bill?
Insur. bill?
Food bill?
Nat. Gas bill?
Elec. bill?
Health Insur. bill?
Trash bill?
Water bill?
Transportation bill?
Daycare bill?

fuckoff2

Clearly these people are nowhere near being realistic in
how humankind has been saddled with so much debt,
once you're behind, that's pretty much when your
world falls apart. Credit gets ruined. Cars taken away.

I'm not really sure they fully realize that trying to keep
this 'unrealistic expectation' while answering this request
was well thought out.

In all honesty, I personally thought they were
waiving the rent bills because I didn't think they could be that cruel.

This situation seems bad enough to me to do it...

New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and St. Louis are among many cities that have temporarily banned evictions, but advocates for the strike are demanding that rent payments be waived, not delayed, for those in need during the crisis. The rent strike idea has taken root in parts of North America and as far away as London.

The Rent is still TOO DAMN HIGH!

They have been putting up new modern looking apartments in my town but it's in the older poorer part of town. I guess they are buying up property of old people who died and their old '30's/40s style older small homes are torn up and modern apartments going up.

The problem is these things rent for over 1400 a month! Who the frick in this part of town has that kind of money? No one. That's half the monthly income for majority of people around here. It's baffling. Idk, maybe they are housing 4 college students in them or something. No one but doctors/lawyers/professors or business owners make that kind of money around here.

So, still no affordable rental apartments since the new ones are through the roof!
